AHAHAHAHAAAA! I had a classmate in college (University of Hawaii at Manoa) who named his ska band 420. He told me that his band once performed a gig for the Honolulu Police department and they totally got the joke! Of course some wiseass asked him if they committed any "420" in front of the po-po, and he just laughed.
For the rest of you good girls (and Lord knows I wasn't one) a 420 is police code for "marijuana possession." Thanks, ska band guy!
420 is code for pot and here's the backstory:
in the 1970s at san rafael high school in marin county, ca (my alma mater) a group of kids heard a rumor that there were wild marijuana bushes growing up on some hills overlooking the town. they met up each day after school - at 4:20pm - to go search for it. they never found the drugs but 420 became a universal code word for the use or possession of pot. i can't vouch for police usage, but i know a lot of people "celebrate" on april 20th too.
