Gravatar does brilliante actually de-grease dirty hair? or do you mean it doesn't add that greasy product feel? i'm always looking for a way to fix my second day hair, which is always pretty icky around the roots. i really can't go near the powder because brushing my curly/wavy hair is a definite no-go. for my hair is banned to ponytails and chignons between washes.

Gravatar What do you mean by the "Great Lash effect"?

Gravatar The Great Lash Effect is a theorem explaining the popularity of mediocre items--i.e., Great Lash mascara, which is hailed as the most brilliant mascara ever to roam the earth but is actually like running a liquidy Q-tip over your lashes.

Magazines generally purport this by saying that Jessica Biel and other luminaries stock their bags with it.

Gravatar where do you buy bumble and bumble products? I can't find them anywhere.

Gravatar Ohhhh...as a total beauty magazine addict myself, I am well acquainted with the "Great Lash Effect." The magazines rave about this
product, which I find actually does go on nicely, but the smearing is not to be believed! It's the worst! I guess if you are on a fashion shoot, you can touch up every 30 seconds.

Gravatar Hi Kristen!

You're doing it wrong!!!

Or your hair simply isn't oily enough to justify a dry shampoo...a girlfriend of mine who has terribly thin hair, which gets a little greasy after a day, swears by dry shampoos. Not only do they absorb oil, but they can add great volume and texture to limp hair.

I think your hair is too thick and gorgeous to need such an item.

By the way...I'm coming to NY Dec 10-14th. Let's get together.

ben

Gravatar Hee hee! "The Great Lash Effect", so appropos!

Gravatar I've never tried the Bb Hair Powder, but I have tried a couple others, and they're really a nice save for the days when you don't have enough time (or are just feeling too lazy) to shower, dry, and style your hair. On the high end, the Rene Furterer Dry Shampoo is nice. It smells great and it's a beige-ish color which looks more natural on blonde/blondeish hair. On the low end, there's this stuff that's sold on the drugstore.com website called Pssssst! It's also a dry shampoo, and it doesn't smell very great and it's a chalky white color, but it gets the job done. But I totally agree about the way it makes your hair feel - I HATE that feeling, so - I usually wear my hair up when I use the dry shampoo and count down the hours until I can get in the shower!

Gravatar Bb is sold even at CVS where I live.

I like their surf spray. That is all I tried so far...sad, ye?

Gravatar Hey Kristen,

I had to delurk on this one. I totally get what you mean about the BB dry spray shampoo, dullsville all the way! Plus that stuff is way to messy for me to even spray in the house, I would only use it in my backyard! I like the Oscar Blandi MUCH better - (not the spray though) and the smell is divine.

Now for the shine - have you tried Aveda's Brilliant Spray-On Shine (in the deep blue bottle) smells great, lasts forever and it's super shiny!!

Gravatar I so hear you on the chalky feel of Bb. Hair Powder. You're doing it right, I assure you. However, the nails-on-a-chalkboard feel are a necessary byproduct of the effect. It does make my hair appear thicker and less greasy but at the expense of luster and texture. I have to quote Stephen Colbert when I say, "We're at war, America. Pick a side." Non greasy and voluminous vs. touchable and oily.

Gravatar i heart b&b so much. i have to say that i'm totally in agreement with you on the smell of the shine stuff--industrial bug spray is a kind description. bu the hair powder??? that stuff is miracle-working for my hair. aveda's pure abundance is pretty great and might work better for you, although the drawback is the funky texture. also love the defrizz and the does it all spray. . . huge fan.

Gravatar I have recently tried B&B's Creme de Coco shampoo and I looooved it! It's so luxurious, it makes my hair soft and it smells so great! I've always wanted to try the powders, I never really bought them because I think they're a little expensive. But I will buy it eventually/
And "The Great Lash" Effect is a great way to describe it. I really don't understand how this piece of crap continues to appear of every "best of" list!!! Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if the wand was a little bigger and it didn't cause me to poke myself in the eye!
I honestly believe the only reason it's the best selling mascara in America is because it costs like 2 bucks at walmart. Otherwise, I don't know why...
Although, I have to admit Maybelline has some mascaras that aren't bad. Cover Girl is by far the worse brand of mascara to me.

Gravatar u can find a salon closest to your house that sells bumble if u go to there website bumbleandbumble.com click on store locator and type in ur zip code and it will give u a whole list of salons....i work in a salon adn never have heard of bumble before and i will swear by it now!

Gravatar Ugh, BB Shine, the smell is so offputting to me that I now dread spraying the stuff on my head. But I'm so stingy and hate wasting money that I will continue to spray it on my head until I've run out of the product. :D

Gravatar Bb.Shine - I always wonder if I'm doing the planet a great disservice when I spray that stinky can. But I do see the shine immediately.
Hate that Great Lash mascara. The only mascara to never let me down is YSL.

Gravatar I do hate Great Lash. And I tried it (twice!) only because it was toted as the greatest mascara out there. It totally sucks.

Gravatar I also hate Great Lash. I know this isn't a mascara blog - but anybody have any cheap mascaras that look great? I heard Curves Mile High by maybelline was good - just in Lucky Mag this month - I don't like to spend more than $10 - because they ALL gunk up - eventually!

Gravatar I also hate Great Lash. Anyone know of any great masacaras? I don't like to spend more than $10 - as they all get gunky eventually.
p.s. I like Waterproof the best - I wear contacts and am prone to a good PMS cry every now and then

Gravatar Rimmel mascaras are inexpensive, come in a variety of textures and they don't smudge!

Gravatar I too hate Great Lash and fully believe Maybelline pays off the magazines to tout this subpar product and I too hate Bb hair powder and have no problems telling everyone I know that. I love the Oscar Blandi one and that one does not make your hair feel like a gross strawlike beehive much like the Bb one does.

Gravatar i completely agree with 'the great lash effect'. it blows my mind that magazines and especially makeup artists continually rec this mascara when there are MILLIONS of better ones out there! i also believe Maybelline pays them to say it, they would have to. another mascara that falls into this category in my opinion is Dior Show. now, it isn't complete shit like Great Lash, but it is DEFINITELY NOT the phenomenal mascara people claim it to be! it's not that great at all! Dior had a MUCH better mascara called Maximeyes that they just recently discontinued and it makes me furious. people rave something up for whatever reason (they like it or they're being paid to rec it) and then everyone follows their advice, whether or not the product ends up being worthy of the praise. Rimmel mascaras are really quite nice and very easy on the wallet. i LOVE the Lycra Lash one, but it doesn't give any volume. i just tried Lash Maxxx and it's nice, too. holds a curl and gives more volume w/o clumps. i'd give this one a shot if you're looking to stick to the drugstore for your mascara purchases.

Gravatar I think Nars makes great blush, and I love their "Desire" color. But I get really tired of seeing everyone going orgasmic over their "Orgasm" color. That color is not, as I've seen claimed, universally flattering. It makes my face look sallow and dirty, not glowing. Some people just do not look good in peachy or orangey pigments, and I am one of them.

There! Now I've gotten that off my chest.

Gravatar "Great Lash effect" is perfect. A few years back Maybelline had a promotion claiming that a tube of Great Lash was purchased somewhere in the world every ten seconds, or some such ridiculous number. I want to know how many barely-used tubes of Great Lash are tossed in trash cans around the world every ten seconds.

The beauty product I don't get is the philosophy cleanser "purity made simple." It won the Best of Sephora award this year for facial cleanser. It gets your face clean, granted, but it smells like a gas station. I had ordered a five piece "try me" set of philosophy products from QVC, so I didn't get to smell them before purchasing. I was sure the cleanser had gone bad, so I smelled it at Sephora to make sure. It smelled exactly the same. Eau de Exxon. Yech.

Gravatar I like Stila's hair powder much more than Bb's. It's not a perfect miracle because it doesn't salvage totally greased out hair, but I find that it's effective if used preventatively. I wash my hair every other day and if I know in advance I'm going out in the evening on a non-wash day, the night before I dust a little on my hands, run it through the roots at my crown and along my part and sleep on it. It keeps my hair from looking limp by the evening. It is, however, a bit of a miracle for giving clean hair some grip for an updo- my hair still looks clean and has volume, but the powder prevents it from sliding out.

Gravatar Kristie - thx for the b&b heads up - I've been wanting to try Surf Spray & didn't know who carried the products around here.

And another loud voice in agreement with the "Great Lash Effect." I don't know ANYONE who actually uses it in real life and yet it keeps popping up in the "best of" lists! They definitely must be paying the magazines off or stuffing the ballot boxes. The waterproof version isn't AS horrible, but I would never buy it again.

Then there's things on those lists like I'm Not Really a Waitress - not bad per se, just really really old and played out. I can understand the same foundation showing up time after time but color is another story.

As for mascara - I finally bit the bullet and bought Chanel Inimitable. I couldn't believe I was paying this much for mascara, but it was (thank heaven) worth it. Susan, Sky High Curves is the best of Maybelline's bunch, and also try any of the new mascaras that have the "rubbery" brush - it seems to make a big difference.

Gravatar Bb Hair powder works for me...but then again, I'm a brunnette. To avoid the chalky feeling, make sure to aim the nozzle from at least 5-10 inches from your actual head. After you spray, wait a minute or two and shake your head to get rid of excess powder. That should do the trick. As a college student, this product has saved my life on those days when there's just no time to shower. However, I ran out so in the meantime I've been using baby powder---is that a crime?

Gravatar I like Brilliantine too. For 2nd or 3rd day hair, try Oscar Blandi Protein di Jasmine spray. It freshens your hair right up and the smell is great!

Gravatar Totally agree on the hair powders... I just can't work them! But, I do love Shine and Brilliantine.. they're fab.

Gravatar I agree with you on the hair powder!! I'm a huge B&B fan and I tried it too because I thought it would be as great as they all say. I ended up returning it to the salon. I got the brown since I'm brunette, and not only did everything in my bathroom get covered with a fine layer of brown gunk (even though I did spray it in my hair, mind you), my hair just felt dingier and dirtier afterwards. Sticky. Every time I touched my head or scalp, I got a brown stain on my hand - ewwwww!! And this was with a very light application! This one's definitely for the birds. I've had more luck with Aveda's Reviving Mist, which is very refreshing.

Gravatar i really like the white hair powder, but i use it to get the perfect "beehive" texture. I'm not sure I would ever use it for it's touted effect of being a "dry shampoo" - the FEEL of it is just..well, perfect for making a beehive
I fell in love with BB's Creme de Cacao line a few years ago, but holy mother of GOD!! I just can't pay that much for shampoo and conditioner. I can't. I'm jewish and i CAN NOT DO IT!
Avedas Color Conserve for me.
Also - Great Lash is the most NON-magical mascara that has ever besmirched my lashes. I say FEH!!

Gravatar I LOVE bb hair power. I divide my hair in sections and spray from underneath. Then flip your head over and brush it out. Flip back and you have TONS of volume. As long as you brush you won't feel that chalky texture. I can't live without this product.

Gravatar I was so relieved to read about the Great Lash effect. I was utterly disappointed by that mascara.

I've been on a quest for the perfect mascara over the last year. I live in Holland, and cycle in the rain a lot, so I need something that really stays on. The best I've found of the drugstore brands is Max Factor More Lashes Waterproof. I once splurged on some Lancome mascara (recommended by a saleswoman), thinking that anything that cost €25 must work, right? It stays on reasonably well, but it's so clumpy and unmanageable to apply that I just don't bother. (In fact, I'm often disappointed by Lancome/L'Oreal products.) Even my usual trick of putting a little water on an eyebrow brush and smoothing over my lashes didn't work! I'll stick with Max Factor.

Gravatar I totally agree re: B&B shine. It smells like cheap hairspray, and although it is really fine, I still feel that it leaves my hair greasy.

I've also used some B&B intensive conditioner before and was seriously underwhelmed, it didn't even detangle that well - the most basic functionality of a conditioner!

Maybe I should give some of the other products like Brilliantine a go though? Bumbel and Bumble is a brand I desperately wanted to like and to date have only been disappointed.

Gravatar I use the B&B spray hairpowder in black and my tip is to spray it closer to your scalp/roots than B&B recommends (which I believe is around 10 inches). I get close to roots, spray and move it around quickly. It's fantastic.

Gravatar I completely agree on the hair powder and wrote a story about it myself.

Maybe it works for some, but for me it was a waste.

Gravatar Great Lash Effect! No kidding. How it manages to do nothing and STILL smudge is beyond me.

I consider myself a connoisseur of cheap mascaras (hey, I have to be good at something) and my top drugstore picks are: Maybelline Full'n'Soft (very natural looking, doesn't smudge), Maybelline Sky High Curves (more dramatic; you can skip eyeliner) and Cover Girl Lash Exact (no clumping, nice everyday look).

Sephora just introduced a new one -- Lash Plumper. Think it's about $12. I bought it after seeing two store employees wearing it -- I thought at first they were wearing false eyelashes!

Gravatar My Bumble and Bumble routine: (i felt like a supermodel after doing this)

1)wash hair with Bumble+Bumble thickening shampoo.
2) condition with BB thickening conditioner.
3) spray BB prep spray onto damp, towel dried hair
4)finally,finish up with a spray of BB thickening spray onto damp, towel dried hair
5) blowdry.
6) prepare to wow and be be wowed

Gravatar I friggin love Bb Styling Cream. I can put it in and quickly blowdry my hair, and it looks good no matter what. I love it because it gives me the full, round brush-blown out look without all the work.

Gravatar I have the thinnest limpest most dullest finest scandinavian hair ever, total seaweed-on-a-rock disaster. I have complete hair envy for all latinas out there and am forever trying to oomph it up with various products available.
I've been in love with b+b products for years but I just tried the dry shampoo recently and I LOVEDLOVEDLOVED the thickness and texture (I actually liked the chalky feel cause it made my hair feel so full and gorgeous) and it totally turned my hair into a victorias secret catwalk angel and I-am-NOT-exaggerating!!!!
but since I'm a brunette I had to buy the brown version, and although I can live with my bathroom being completely covered in dark stains, I had a harder time accepting all the black marks all over my face, neck, arms etc. How the hell is this product supposed to be used, I MUST not be doing it right.
After i cleansed my skin, reapplied my make up and dashed off to the party I felt like a goddess because I so rarely have such amazing hair (I mean not even after proffesional styling with hair extension and the full nine yards) Anyways, after an hour or so of great conversations with various x-boyfriends and other desireable persons I go to the bathroom to check my makeup and ...not only do I have HUGE stains on my forehead where my hair has been touching my skin, I also have a VERY realistic mustache-looking mark under my nose!! cause my hands are black from the shampoo and it has rubbed off onto my face!!
So please, if anybody out there knows how to avoid all the mess but keep the amazing unbelieavable brazilian supermodel texture then PLEASE let me know!!

Gravatar Haha, this was indeed a great read, girls!

I work as a stylist, and while I do own a GL-mascara, I only use it when I go hiking (because it only makes your lashes darker, not thicker og longer in any way). Is it a great mascara? Hell no

Regarding the powder, I use it myself, but as a reader points out, you might actually have too thick hair. The spray is ideal for the typical scandinavian hair (thin straws, but oh so many), but start with no make-up.

Follow the instructions, but be prepared to clean your face, shoulders and sink afterwards. I only apply quick small doses, wait 15 secs and combs through. If you feel that your hair looks dull, just apply a shine-on on top, and you're good to go.. I especially like the spray when I'm making a bun, because the hair seems thicker and stays in place better. A great spray for this is the Vavoom from Matrix, just make sure you keep it at a 40 cm distance

Gravatar october - just make sure you get rid of ALL the excess powder! Brush through the hair several times to make sure it sticks!

Gravatar Remember that Bumble & Bumble white hair powder you brought me from one of the shows 2 seasons ago? So white is way too light and if I use too much of it the dulling effect/color mismatch is obvious but I have to say that it gives my wavy hair the most amazing texture. Every time I use it someone mentions how fantastic my hair looks.

Just ran out. Damn. Getting more in Feb for sure!

Gravatar but I DID brush through my hair, I brushed and I brushed until my poor mason pearson could brush no more...
so I mean unless you wanna rock that whole steelworker look from flashdance I simply don't get it!! you feel like the greasy 'soul glow' guy from that eddie murphy movie (coming to america ) from back in the day.

Gravatar Tip for the B&B hair powder: spray it on a brush and then brush your roots with it. That way you don't use to much and can add more if needed.

I have fine, limp hair and not washing it every day is not an option. That was until I discovered hair powder.

In Canada we have a line called Cake Beauty. Sephora carries it. They have a powder also and it can be used on the body as well but it does not come in a spray bottle. Smells like Candy and works well for much less.

Most of BBs products underwhelm me. However, I think their styling products are better than their shampoos. I've had better results w the Bed Head line.

Gravatar spray the stuff on your brush and then brush your hair. trust.

Gravatar i'm not one to go 24 hrs. without washing my hair (esp. if within those hours i'm at a smokey bar, in which i end up returning home and bathing myself to remove the stench), but if i find myself needing to run out without a shower or shampoo i find it easiest not to rely upon product and instead tease the front of my hair and use a bristle brush to lightly pull it back with bobbies. there's a reason why when you get your hair done they tell you not to wash it: it holds better! teasing removes any look of oil and remember, the more you mess with it and touch it...the more oilier it gets!

Gravatar i tried the new bumble powder but i had a lot of the same problems with it being clumpy and i found the fumes really over-powering. my roommate got me turned on to this stuff called Umi Powder. http://www.umisite.com/umi% 20pro...20products.html

It works super well at masking 2nd and 3rd day hair. It even takes smells out of the hair and i was able reblowdry sections after using the powder to get more volume! and it doesn't show up in my dark brown hair!! i had to call up and order it over the phone, but it is totally worth it. this stuff is awesome!

Gravatar There is something for eveyone , you either love the hair powders or you hate them . To some of my clients is's the best thing since slice bread and to others it's the worst money ever spent .Personally I love the product line and so do my clients but as we all know we all have our favorites.
Great job !!

Gravatar Have you checked out the Bb Button Bands? I love them and think they are an ab fab holiday or B-Day gift!

Gravatar Bumble and bumble is the perfect runway hair. At our busy salon in Asheville, NC we provide tons of bridal services and no product compares to the way Bb performs. Sure, the shine stinks, but it sure does work!

Gravatar The B&B colored powder spray is expensive and a bit of a pain, but it's good when I'm extending my color appointment and covering up my greys! Love the extra volume, but wish it was less messy when applying. I don't think it's a good product if you're a head sweater and use it around the hair line. When I'm using a product specifically to get rid of the oil and extend my blow outs, I usually use Rene Furterer dry spray shampoo or Oscar Bilandi dry shampoo (non-spray version - you have to work hard to get the ashy look out if you have dark hair, but the bottle lasts longer than the Rene F. spray bottle, plus I think my blow out lasts an extra day too).

Here are the B&B products that I've had good luck with -
-Deep Conditioner - great deep conditioner and love the smell.
-Grooming Creme - When I blow out my curly hair, I add a dab of this to my straightening gel when it's humid to help with frizz.
-Prep or Tonic Spray - My wet hair has tangles after washing, so I spray a few squirts and it makes it so much easier to comb!
-Curl Conscious Reactiviating Mist - For those days when I'm trying to avoid shampooing my curly hair, but don't want to have bed head.
