What's worse: chemically straightening hair, or blowing hair out and flat ironing it 2-3 times per week? I know they're both bad, but is there a lesser of the two evils?

Could you please tell me what the ingredient is in foundation that makes your face look much whiter in photos?!?! Is it just one ingredient, or a combination? Could you recommend any brands which don't do this?
Thanks

How difficult would it be for cosmetics producers to make one body cream that would be
1. great moisturiser
2. skin refining
3. anti-celulite (skin tightening)
4. taning lotion
5. anti-aging
6. hair growth minimizing
7. UVA and UVB protective?
It seems to me that this all in one would be a great thing for all us girls, but am wondering if all these ingredients could work together. How much would a thing like this cost?
Thanks for your answer!

Hi.. A few months ago I noticed some stray hairs on my chin and upper lip.. I impulsively shaved them off!!! *BAD ME, I know* Now I find that I need to *ahem* shave every 2-3 days sometimes.. I try to let it go as long as I can so I don't shave too much.. My real question is, what is the BEST way to remove facial hair on SENSITIVE skin? I've used depilatory creams.. And they were no help.. Thank you!
I am a female by the way haha.

In latin america and apparently in some other countries like germany, we have now a new hairline of garnier fructis, called garnier fructis oil repair, and it claims to have as an ingredient, avocado and some other oils... Ive been thinking about buying it, because i already tried garnier fructis long and strong and it worked well on my hair so i was wondering if there is really some difference between these new shampoos, conditioners, leave-in conditioners and deep 'oil repair' conditioners... because i constantly blow dry my hair and im thinking about buying it, does it really make hair shinier and stronger and softer?
Thanks!! and sorry about my english!

I love to exfoliate and use face masks (not at the same time of course) and was wondering if using masks and exfoliators will counteract using a gradual self tanner on my face. It seems like as soon as I exfoliate, even if a day or two later, it would remove some of the self tanner I had applied, especially if it is of the gradual variety? What's your take, should I ditch the self-tanner?

You guys helped me so much with your Ojon review. I had recently purchased the Discovery Kit, which I liked, but not as much as I like the coconut oil! I bought 2 bottles by Parachute, one plain coconut oil, and one named Sampoorna, which also contains almonds and hibiscus. I also bought a shampoo called Vatika Henna Creme Conditioning Shampoo by Dabur, which I would swear is Herbel Essence from the 70's. I like them all, and was wondering if you could tell me what you thought of them and if you know the proper way to 'oil' my hair. I'm hoping this will keep more of my hair on my head!

Hi!
I absolutely love your site. Thank-you so much for providing me and others a beauty reference that we can trust!
I'm at the ripe age of 41 and struggling with acne, and the signs of aging. So I'm looking at products all over the skincare spectrum. One ingredient(s) that seems to be hot right now are peptides. I finally have learned about BHAs and AHAs and what they can do for my skin. Now I really need help with these peptides! There seem to be several variations depending on the product. Can you explain exactly what benefit peptides perform for you skin and if I should be looking for particular peptides to perform different functions?
TIA!

Speak to me, oh Beauty Brains, of "Idebenone" and its supposed anti-aging miracles. Hi. I've heard that you should start using antiaging products in your twenties, so you'll get less wrinkles, is that true? If so, will using a retinol cream at night and mositurizer with SPF 30 during the day enough? I wanted to add some brightening formulas (likevitamin C or glucosamine), but not sure if I should or when. I've been a beauty junkie since I have memory (Believe it or not I started cleansing and mositurizing twice daily at the age of 10), and I have recently found that I don't have enough time in the day to use all the products I read you "should" use in the magazines.

As a woman, I find that when I wash my "sweet spot" with regular soap, it stings and burns. I wanted to know what ingredients in regular soap cause this sensation. I've been using cetaphil, which I haven't had any problems with, but I'd like to find something that I can use all over my body. There is a new company (http://www.sweetspotlabs.com), which makes products exclusively for a woman's "sweet spot." I'm wondering what makes their cleansing products different from the regular body soaps on the market? I'm trying to decide whether they are worth the expense.

first,i want to say that i LOVE YOU'RE SITE. it's taught me so much and it helped clear up the "is pantene bad for you're hair controvery".
anyways, i'm a guy with thick, poofy wavy hair and i love the straight, slicked back look. i've used pantene's in control shaping mousse to slick my hair and it seemed to work okay, but the mousse said it was for people who had fine, limp hair that needed body. should i continue to use this mousse or not?
second, i was watching a movie where a guy had thick wavy hair like mine and at the end he had slick straight hair. do you have any idea what they might have used to make his hair change like that?
third, i saw this expensive gel called phyto sculpting gel and was wondering whether it might help me acheive the slick look or whether i should buy garnier's fructis wet gel, which is much cheaper.
sorry for all the questions.

Hi, I have a couple questions:
1) I've heard that there are cewrtain ingredients in shampoos that can be too harsh for curly hair (which tends to be drier) and so should be avoided. Is there much truth to this?
2) I often see articles in magazines that claim that you can help a conditioning treatment work better by adding heat-- for example, applying the conditioner to your hair, then wrapping your hair in a towel or shower cap and blasting it with your hair dryer for a few minutes, to help the treatment "penetrate the hair" better. Is there any truth to this?

I have a medical condition called psoriasis on my scalp and find I need to use medicated shampoos frequently to control the itching and build up of skin. Many of these shampoos contain ingredients like salicylic acid or tars (ie. Neutrogene T-Gel, Polytar, Dermarest are the three most recent ones I've used). Plus, I often have to leave a product on my head for several minutes. Are these ingredients potentially damaging to my hair? Is there anything I can do to minimize the damage? I do condition my hair faithfully, but I'm worried about my hair closest to my scalp where the shampoo sits and I usually don't condition.

Hey Brains, thanks for answering my question on Pantene a few months ago. Now I'm hearing about their new line of 'Ice Shine' which claims to make hair shinier than normal shampoo. I'm suspicious about whether these claims are truly scientific or just made-up marketing gimmicks. The shampoo ingredients(taken from from Ulta.com) are:
Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Coco/Isostearamide, Sodium Chloride, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Panthenol, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Lysine HCl, Methyl Tyrosinate HCl, Histidine, Fragrance, Sodium Benzoate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Polyquaternium-10, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Sodium Xylenesulfonate
and the conditioner ingredients are:
Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Coco/Isostearamide, Sodium Chloride, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Panthenol, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Lysine HCl, Methyl Tyrosinate HCl, Histidine, Fragrance, Sodium Benzoate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Polyquaternium-10, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Sodium Xylenesulfonate
So, since I know absolutely nothing about what these chemicals do, do you guys see anything that makes the line special and ultra-shiny? Thanks a bunch.

I am a scientist, and would like to know the truth about the face creams that say they are rejuvenating because they remove dead cells and stimulate the new cell layers underneath to divide. This sounds downright dangerous- I was taught that skin cells only have a finite number of divisions they can undergo (natural aging) so if you use them up sooner - does this mean no skin for the last 20 years of your life? And stimulating cells to divide is one step in making cells into cancer cells. Aren't dermatologists concerned?

I was wondering how they would make a facial cleanser that cleans your face from dirt and free radicals as well as protect you from the sun year round? Could you shed some light on this for me?

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to answer all these questions! It's a wonderful resource.
I belong to a long hair site where there are a number of fanatics who insist that, among other things, -cones (silicone, dimethicone, amodimethicone) are terrible for your hair. I know that you answered a fairly similar question already, but I'd like to be able to give a detailed response to their claims that it a) locks out moisture, b) makes it difficult to see and thus, trim split ends and c) is extremely difficult to remove from hair without stripping it totally dry.
Thank you for any help you can give!

Hopefully I have picked the correct place to ask a couple questions
First for me I have a machine called a splitender (it's one of those as seen I tv things tho I got it from a garage sale ya I'm a tightwad LOL) It seems to work pretty well for me but I was wondering What your opinion is of it. Also using this do I still need to cut my hair?? I'm old (50) and it comes down to my waist and I don't want to cut it if I don't have to. After all how long am I going to live LOL.
The second question is for my adult daughter she has had bad acne almost like boils on her chin and cheeks. I had this as a teen but it went away eventually. She has seen doctors but they don't seem to be able to come up with an answer. She went swimming in a saltwater pool and it helped some of it, I thought if she washed her face with apricot scrub and sea salt it would help. Do you think so?? Do you have any ideas what would help as this bothers her a lot
Thank you

hi,
I want to know if hair colour per say is good or damaging for hair. I've been getting a few grays, way prematurely and wanted to know if hair colour will ruin my hair if I use it? Also, what if after using it for a year you stop, does the natural original hair color return?
Thanks

I have young daughters, and I'd like for them to have every opportunity to avoid the problems I had with my skin as a teenager and beyond. Are there facial cleansers and sunscreens out there that would be appropriate for young (under 10) skin, to use on a daily basis? What is the best way to teach them now to try and prevent acne?
Thanks! Cool blog -- you have saved me many times

First of all, I love you guys dearly. You guys have a wonderful website here.
I decided to flip through your archives and I came across a post you guys made on April the 11th.
It made me very upset to read that you guys made light of animal testing. I realise that many ingrediants in our makeup have in the past been tested on animals. But now their is no excuse for animal testing. Their are many more humane ways to test cosmetic ingrediants.
Many companies have chosen to go animal testing free. Like Revlon has been animal testing free since the early 90's.
If you guys are curious to learn more please check out, www.peta.com for more information. They can explain to you more fully about alternative ways of cosmetic testing. And if you are feeling brave maybe you can even watch a few of their videos of animals in testing labratories.

Andrea,
Thank you so much for your comments. Your perspective is clearly heartfelt and well thought out. We're sorry you were upset by that post.
Did you get a chance to read the follow-up post on 5/6/06 entitled "Animal Testing Analysis"? In it we further elaborate on the points made in the 4/11 post.
Basically, ALL of the ingredients in your makeup have been tested on animals. There is no getting around that fact. You say there is no excuse for animal testing but that is just not true.
"The reason is because cosmetic companies are legally required through trade and consumer protection laws to prove their products are not toxic or dangerous. Specific rules vary from country to country, but in places like the U.S., Japan, and most of the EU safety standards often require animal testing to prove a product’s safety. As alternatives to animal testing are developed such as computer modeling, or cell cultures, the laws are being changed, but this is a slow process. In most cases these alternatives are not accepted as adequate proof so there is no legally acceptable form of safety testing except on animals."
Please view the rest of the post. In no way did we mean to make light of animal testing. It is an unfortunate, but still mandatory fact of the cosmetic industry.
The bottom line is, the ingredients have been tested on animals even if the particular cosmetic hasn’t. The companies that tout “animal testing free” positions exist off the backs of companies who’ve done all the testing before them.
Thank you for the PETA link. We already know about alternative ways to test cosmetics. The bottom line is that the methods are not yet adequate to replace animal testing completely. No matter what PETA says, that's a fact.
Unfortunately, this half of the Beauty Brains is not easily swayed by emotional appeals. Logical arguments rule. There are awful people in the world that do not think treating animals poorly is wrong. It's easy to find these people despicable.
However, the killing of animals occurs everyday to make things like hamburger, chicken, and bacon. Rats and mice are killed everyday just because they exist. And don't even get me started on how ants and roaches and spiders are treated. It makes no logical sense to argue against using animals for testing while we slaughter them to satisfy our hunger. Until the world goes vegetarian and bans all animal eating, it seems illogical to argue against animal testing.
Would you stop drug development? They kill many, many more animals than the cosmetic industry.
We support alternatives to animal testing. But until there are adequate alternatives that are accepted by governments around the world, what choice do cosmetic companies have?
Thanks again for you comments.

Hi. I recently started using Physcians Formula bronzer. Even though the product claims to be oil-free and noncomedogenic, I am worried that it will make me pores bigger and create breakouts. Is this something to be panicked about, or am I overreacting?

Hi Beauty Brains. Love the site. My question is what causes frizzy hair and what can I do to prevent this? My hair tends to go crazy in rainy weather or if there's a lot of humidity in the air. Thanks.

Dear Brain, other question from Buenos Aires. I´m very confused about face foundation and powders.
If face foundation is oil, or water or oil in water, or water in oil, and mica, talc pigments and preservatives... Why I must to put on my face loose powder?
What is powder? More pigments, more talc, ... Should I put only face foundation? Should I put only powders?
Both ?
Besides, What is a "mousse texture" face foundation? (Maybelline have one) They say elastomers of silicone ..

What else, besides acetone, can be used to remove nail polish? Acetone is simply too drying ...
Is there anything else besides it that could be used?

Dear Brains,
How would I get the smell out of fresh onion juice without changing the natural onion output and intensity /consistancy/healing properties?
This may seem an odd question, but we are using onion juice as a base for a foot remedy cure.
thank you

Dear Brains,
You really got me into looking into my beauty products. The thing is that i'm also a chemist and a pharmacologist, so I do get a kick out of "hunting down the molecules" of my beauty products... there's only one problem, I need some facts!! How small does a molecule have to be to effectively penetrate the hair's cuticle and how large does it have to be to be able to effectively form films on my hair strands?

How does a salon "gloss" or "glaze" work? (i.e. Redken Shades EQ)
Contrary to conditioners that simply use ~wetness~ to temporarily stick the cuticle scales together to be closed similar to how a wet piece of paper can be stuck to a wall without falling down temporarily, I've read somewhere that there is something out there that actually glues those cuticle scales close with a much stronger and permanent force (adhesive force?). Would this be something like Redken Shades EQ, or a salon gloss?
Thanks in advance for your consideration in answering this question. I love your site. Never has FRUSTRATION that comes from ambiguous, nonsensical and plain-weird marketing language (resulting in indecision!) been irradicated SO satisfyingly.
I am on a mad quest to get the shiniest hair possible. You know those little locks of real human hair showing as samples for dye products? And you know how they are SO shiny, it's as though they were coated with lacquer? Well, if i had my way, i'd have hair as shiny as that (don't ask why)
And if i REALLY had my way...
I'd impregnate my hair with polyurethane under 100psi of pressure; that way, they'll be shiny permanently!
Thanks for reading.

I would like to purchase a flat iron. I heard the Chi was a good one as well as Tourmaline. I also heard that a ceramic plate is the best as it won't "fry" you hair as much. Look forward to your comments.

I think the formaldehyde in nail polish is giving me problems (dried out, peeling nails) . Things have been much better since switching to formaldehyde-free polishes. Trouble is, I have quite a few beautiful formaldehyed-containing polishes that I'd still like to wear. Would a formaldehyde-free basecoat protect my nails from the formaldehyde in the polish?

I must say I am now totally addicted to this blog - and finally starting to accept what I already subconsciously knew about cosmetics, i.e., they do not work miracles. So thanks for that!
And I have three very important questions.
1. Is it ok to use various products (such as moisturiser and foundation) with different active sunscreen ingredients at the same time, for example, mexoryl and avobenzone?
2. What are the products that the Beauty Brains use and consider to be good?
3. Since now I’m striving to educate myself, do you know of any other interesting scientist or cosmetics blogs we can trust?

Dear Brains, I just got a "personalized hair and bulb analysis"by a companycalled Nourish...I sent in some hair and they plopped it under a microscope and sent me some pictures back ..analyzing my hair problems... according to them the causes of my dry ,weak hair are... 1.deep dirt and heavy sebum in the hairs dermal papilla and 2. lack of nutrition in the hair ...my hair under the microscope does look pretty sick compared with the healthy hair...I,m wondering whether to get their products or is it another scam.. ever heard of this? The"deep cleansing" shampoo is called follicleanse and has sodium laureth sulfate,Panthenol ,(i know about these two) hydrolized rice protien, arcticum lappa, hedera helix, fenegeek, and zinc pca..they also recommended jojoba oil ..hair nutrition vitamins..vitamin shampoo and silk protien conditioner...What do you think.. another rip off????
