Welcome to the Commenting Pixie Party!

Gravatar This now my third time watching this. My kids are saying, "Are you seriously going to just keep watching that over and over again?"

But yeah, it's making me teary-eyed even amidst this gang of teenagers.

Gravatar I just keep thinking, "He lived to see the day!"

Gravatar Exactly.

Gravatar Mallory has a couple of teenagers over for dinner and baking. I made them watch it, complete with narration from Bert and I.

We loved it.

Still don't know the name of the guy I know from here that was in the audience. Will have to pull it up on YouTube and show it to everyone.

Gravatar I'm crying too. Thank you.

Gravatar I got teary during "This Land...", but also during U2. Who cries for Bono? Me, I guess!

Gravatar Oh, I cried during U2, too, K. I excused myself by saying it was really my 14-year-old self doing the crying. You know, back in the day when catching "Pride (In The Name of Love)" on MTV meant it was going to be a Really Good Day.

Gravatar Yeah, we did both of those too.

Gravatar I grew up on Pete Seeger. And that song. Including the "no trespassing" verse.

In other news, for knitters, someone has already tracked down the source of that hat!

They just got told it was their hat themselves:

I love Pete Seeger.

Gravatar

I love you, Sara! I was TOTALLY trying to figure out if there was a source for The Hat. God, such a great hat. I hope they make the pattern available.

Gravatar How excited must they be?

Gravatar oh, darn darn darn. they took the clip down. i think there is a you-tube that someone took of the rehearsal of this song, though.

i was doing a lot of crying while watching, too.

Gravatar Husband just found a different one on Youtube after I told him he had to go watch it.

His first comment? "Doesn't Pete Seeger look like Dumbledore?"

Gravatar here's a different link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n...h? v=nMYtNlIlGKM

Gravatar The socklady has a link that still works.

I couldn't see the concert (durn HBO wouldn't give it to us free in Canada) but I found a bunch of clips last night before the durn HBO lawyers yanked most of them.

I was bopping with Barack and Michelle for Higher Ground.

Gravatar Will it be embarrassing if I say I have a little crush on Tao?

Gravatar I cried during the whole thing!

Gravatar That is exactly what happened at my house. We heart both Pete Seeger and Bruuuuuuuce. Mr. T. already has a tribute post up to Seeger. . .

Gravatar It's really unfortunate that HBO has decided that this particularly beautiful piece of music can't be shared. We caught it this morning somewhere, but now it's gone.

Gravatar kathy a., thanks for posting that alternate link. We don't have a TV, and I only had the vaguest knowledge of the concert's existence (though we'll be watching the actual inauguration tomorrow AM on streaming video), and I just watched that clip and sobbed all the way through it like you wouldn't believe. I didn't know I was going to do that. It just hit me hard, somehow. Anyway, thanks.

Gravatar This made me cry, too.

And I think it sucks that HfrickinBO gets to copyright and hold onto this stuff.

BUT...the Kid has a video of this which at some point will show up on his FB page.

Gravatar I teared up, watching Curious Girl start clapping and singing along on "this Land is your land" (and I loved that Bruce called it the greatest song every written). And the hat! I was thinking it looked just like some socks a friend has--and turns out I was right, as the socks are by the same company.

Gravatar I just switched the link to the German video. Fuck HBO, anyway.

Gravatar Aaaah. Teary me.

Gravatar I was crying, too!

Gravatar Thank you for the link.

Gravatar "Woody Guthrie's famous quote is appropriate here -- apparently printed on songbooks with the words to his songs: This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright #154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don't give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that's all we wanted to do."

Gravatar Wow, Genevieve! You forgot to mention the most impressive point, which is that Hilzoy is related to Gordon Bok! He was considered a musical demigod in his own right, in my house, growing up.

Gravatar Genevieve -- that quote is quite wonderful!
