Paul Taylor's book, Respect for Nature: A Theory of Environmental Ethics (1986), which I cite there, is the best systematic exploration and defense of something along the lines suggested here. As Taylor writes, "To have the attitude of respect for nature is to regard wild plants and animals of the Earth's natural ecosystems as possessing inherent worth." I'll leave it to others to assess the merits of the argument.
