My favorite character is Anya, who I believe makes her first appearance in the third season.

Ooooh, I love Anya too. Anya is the awkward, angry nerdling girl ^ nth power.

I can't wait until you watch more episodes! I love the development of Xander in the last couple seasons...and you may have to start watching Angel and time the seasons to match each other.

I don't know about y'all, but all I have to do if I need a good cry is put on the season 2 ender. Just kills me everytime. Damn Sarah McLaughlin tunes!
(bonus! last shot is in San Pedro - true story!)
This show is SOOOO good. Start to end. Excellent development over time, as you'll see.
I think it was too late in the 90s for Lisa Loeb though, wasn't it? I think of her as 92-3 and Buffy is 97, no? In teenage trend years that's like 5 generations of fads.

Ah - just saw the lower post about season 1 were the Xander as Douche angle began.
I'm halfway to Amber's thinking on this one. But I'll say this, Joss's perfection comes in his characters growing, BUT, they are still themselves. Consider it a subliminal message to the girls out there that, no, you can't change him. (or guys, etc.) That douchey thing Xander does in Season 2? You'll similar actions later in the series. Xander is all about expectations. You must live up to his expectations for you. If you don't, you are damned. (And in Sunnyvale, that's not just an expression, right?) He doesn't suffer mistakes from his friends very well. He almost corrects this character flaw, but it will ALWAYS be there in him.
And as for Buffy being dumb - I agree that she deepens over the series. But also, as you saw in the Becoming duet, she was just a blonde with a charmed Queen Bee life before. I don't think smarts were required. Now she has this kinda big deal role in the world, but when you have a predicted shelf life of a jar of mayo left in the August Sacramento sun, it may be hard to see the point of book learnin' even if you have wisened up to the importance of book smarts.
I think this develops more in the college years (which, by the way, are not, in my opinion, the show's highlight At All.)
Lastly, note as you pass through each season that Season X, Ep. 1 is always the exact same show. Really. The same. And it's never good. And it takes until Season X, Ep. 2/3 for whomever to Learn Lesson/Highlight Weight Of Season X-1's ender For Benefit Of Audience.
Enjoy the show! Your prize comes later with, undoubtedly, the HOTTEST sex scene ever broadcast on network television. Or that you may see ever. Period.
Who's with me? You know what I'm talking about. Don't spoil it for Belle!
