Gravatar What's "doxa"?

I'm not sure what was wrong in the behavior in the last story, but I thought the linked article was completely lame- a great example of someone with purely personal issues trying to blame them on his education. "Harvard made me so I can't talk to a plumber!" No, you jerk. Many people get elite educations and don't come out as asses. The trouble is with you, that you're a jerk! Turn your big brain in on itself and figure this out! It was a bad as Ross Douthat crying about how he never learned anything at Harvard (including how to read a course guide, since many things he said were not taught there were regularly taught there.) Terrible, terrible stuff. But I don't see that in this interaction.

Gravatar Oh, nothing wrong with the behavior--just that it seemed like it could have been like a nerdkly cute way for a guy to approach a girl, but instead it's actually just what it is. Which I actually kind of like too. I was trying to make it ironic by positing that had his intention been to hit on me, it failed because we were just two nerds passing in the night. But that would require you to assume as given a hypothetical scenario. Ah, I need to write better.

Doxa.

Gravatar he kept asking me about what is it about Asian culture that impedes Asians from advancing into management positions in the workplace.

"I dunno. But I do wonder how all those firms in Asia manage to find enough Westerners to manage their companies."

Gravatar Ha!

Gravatar As for dude's comments on academia....i once dated a transplant surgeon who asked, at every date..."are you going to stay a professor for good? wouldn't you rather go back into private practice." i just dumped him, but wish i said "helping you make payments on your DUMBO loft ain't exactly a high priority for me!"
