If it's any reassurance, the proper name of the connector on a flash drive is "Standard-A plug". Unlike many connectors, both plug and receptacle penetrate each other in places, so calling the plug side "male" is actually misleading.
My knowledge of the book industry is fleeting, but I'd wager a significant sum that Ms. Valenti had absolutely no control over the cover image of her book. That doesn't make it a good cover, but know who to train your fire on.
"Full Frontal Feminism" has come under a lot of fire on a lot of fronts, but while I haven't read it, Feministe is a blog I respect tremendously and she launched a pretty stinging rebuttal of the critics. I encourage you to check it out.
