The Capital Letter - by BerlinBear

Gravatar When I heard you had moved to Trier I wondered if there was much about Marx in Trier - have you been inside the museum, is it worth seeing?

At least you didn't tell GwC it was the home of the Marx brothers!

Gravatar @ JH
Yeah, there is plenty about Marx/named after Marx here. I'm afraid I've not yet been in the museum, or indeed been to any of the sights here. I hope to start getting onto that sort of stuff in the course of the next month, but so far I've just been run off my feet. Once I've seen it, I'll let you know.

Gravatar Gawd, I thought that sort of ignorance was only found here!

At least he was making an effort to find out, I suppose.

Gravatar I symathise with someone who is following a map to check out the sites and doesn't know what the buggery bollocks he is looking at. I've done it more than once....but not knowing about Karl Marx is extraordinary.

Gravatar that's HILARIOUS! i find it difficult to believe that someone didn't know who he was.....oh my

Gravatar @themarina
I know! Shocker eh?

Gravatar @ Kiwi in Zurich
Dallas eh? Well, well, well. You certainly do get around good sir. Welcome back

Gravatar I'm very surprised someone of that age had no heard of Karl Marx. Out of interest I asked my kids id they had heard of him. All said " no - WTF" including my 15 year old daughter who is sitting the UK Cambridge exams this year.

Makes you wonder.

Gravatar Oh that is so funny and so sad at the same time...I'm not even sure whether to laugh or cry.

Gravatar Don't bother with the museum. It's pretty uninspiring. Well, it was in 1997 anyway. I didn't like the Porta Nigra much either. The highlight of my trip to Trier was the shop where I bought my swatch.

I had a student in my classes this semester who didn't know what Roger Douglas was. Perhaps not in the same league, but for someone studying humanities at Auckland Uni it was still pretty damn phenomenal, I thought.

Gravatar Dear Sir,
Are you certain that the incident was as innocent as it appeared? Perhaps you had a run in with the Belgian secret service (The man could, after all, have been a Walloon operative.) He was told by his German contact (a man ostensibly named Franz Flick and described as wearing a dark coat with a red rose in the lapel) to meet him in front of the Karl Marx museum in Trier for the drop off. "How can I be certain it is you," the Belgian enquired during their brief chat on a secure line. You see, the Belgian was well aware of the interest the Danish secret service (PET) had in the mission (it involves bacon for export, more I cannot reveal), and feared being intercepted by his nemesis, Rasmus Rasmussen, Jutland's most notorious agent (A kind of James Bond in pig-skin boots.) Well, to ensure that their rendezvous went well, Franz suggested that the Belgian ask who Karl Marx was. "Believe me, nobody would ask that question. Not right in front of the damn museum. It is very subtle, very subtle indeed." Most importantly, however, the German had to reply to Belgian: "Karl Marx? He was the one who brought the capitalist pigs to their knees."
You may count your blessings, Senor Bear, that you are not accustomed to such Communist rhetoric. Otherwise you might have found yourself carrying a package marked "top secret" and smelling faintly of bacon. And a vicious Dane, hot in pursuit.

Gravatar Well, Marx didn't quite 'invent' communism but rather politicised and contemporarised it. Oh, and yes, i did not that he was born in Trier.

Gravatar @Inquisitor
You are right, of course about Marx's role in Communism. That was what I was trying to get at with "he *pretty much* invented...", though you've put it more eleoquently than I could have hoped to. That said, I think I am fairly safe in saying that the distinction between inventing Communism and politicising and contemporising it would have been lost on this particular gentleman. Thanks for stopping by.
