Thanks for posting Ataturk's words.
For a long time I have been very impressed with the attitude of the Turks towards Gallipoli - lets face it the Anzacs were an invasion force - we invaded their home. The welcoming attitude of the Turks to the pilrimiage of Aussies and Kiwis is generous - if I ever get to Turkey I am going to try and find a way of passing on my thanks to the Turkish people. Rather than just talking about 'our sacraficies' on Anzac day, I would feel a lot happier if more was done to equally acknowledge Turkish losses.

That is a wonderful poem. I know only a little about Ataturk, and it makes me want to know more about the kind of person who could express such thoughts.
Off topic completely: I just came across this blog entry about how the US regards Europe, and thought of you as I was reading it (maybe because it mentions Germany, but not only that). I was fascinated, but I don't know enough to comment on it intelligently. I'd be interested to hear your views on it, though, and also to hear what you have to say about how the US is viewed from Europe (or at least from Germany).

Thank you both for your thoughtful comments.
@ BadAunt: I will hopefully have a chance to check out that website at the weekend. When I do, you can be sure you'll hear about it.
@ Joe: Your comment reminded me of a very cool personal story, which I hope to relate in tomorrow's post. Watch this space.
