i do note that orthodox jews and strict roman catholics in the usa also seek religious rulings on marital matters. the jewish husband must consent to a divorce, and provide the wife with a "get" - if not, religiously she's not divorced. the catholics disallow all divorce but will grant annulments - even after decades of marriage - a fiction of canon law so that a divorced catholic can remarry "in the church" and not be considered an adulterer.
