I usually don't care for Americanized chinese food- all the sauces for everything are the same, meaning they are brown and kind of sweet. What IS that???? I also hate that there is rarely Chinese broccoli (gai lan), watercress, or other common chinese veggies on the menu. But, even though I can cook and love NYC Chinatown, I do crave General Tso's chicken sometimes

Thats not fair, we don´t even have chicken balls here!! Yes, tasty food always is yummy but why does it pretend to be chinese when it has nothing in common with what people in china eat? And why don´t most dishes taste like what they are made of? I´m afraid that one day everything will taste like Hamburgers, no matter what it is. So many meals already are much too sweet, too salty, too fat, never sour or bitter. Sometimes I want to buy me a lemon and just bite in it to bring me back to normal again
Or I just cook for myself ...

fashmagslag: general tso chicken is pretty yummy! I agree that the brown sauce/sweet stuff on americanized chinese food is pretty bad. but just like some food is an acquired taste, so is chop suey!

gerry: cook for me! I do find a lot of food are becoming more homogenized, everything tasting sorta in the middle, very little complexity.
