i wish i knew more about art. i was at a friend's place who has her walls covered and i asked how she chooses pieces. She told me not to choose things based on whether it matches the drapes or the furniture. she chooses things that she likes, that moves her, so i wait for those. they don't often come along, but when they do, i jump on it!

Beautiful post. I'm hopeless when it comes to covering my walls. 2 years later, and I still have nothing on the walls of the new place...

The problem isn't simply finding what you like, it's removing the vast cluttered bulk of stuff that keeps you from finding what you like. Then, as you've discovered, what you like can cost several millions (or tens of thousands) dollars more than you have to spend for that space above the tv. Anyway, it's sort of like dating, you've got to look at a great deal of stuff, and sift through much (that is to you) not worthy before you find what will make you happy. (It's why I have several works by a few individual artists). I figure though that if you begin by trying to fill wall space as the impeteus for art buying, you should shift your focus to buying wall coverings instead -- if that's art, great. If it's a fab poster or something from a craft show, so be it.
All other things being equal I buy my art when I reach this state: "I can't live without it." There are immeasurable numbers of works I like or find nice and even beautiful or moving. However, the number with a price in the range I can afford, and can't live without, is much more manageable. But again, the total number I can afford still leaves me aching with paintings "that got away."
Many of my paintings I would never have given second thought to if I'd seen them first on the web. And many paintings I've seen on the Web and I've loved looked like crrrap in person. Depends on the medium of the work, really.
Oh, tell Y there's a painting at O'Connor (two actually) that he will be IN LOVE with -- sorry, can't remember the artist's name.
Nice blog entry, btw.

ok, mister. time for a post.
i shall assign you a topic:
Goldfrapp.
write about them and their impact on your daily life. ...and, I know that they have impacted it. ...to deny this would just be wrong.
or -- just post something!
B is in Toronto right now! He is too shy as I tried to get him to drop you a line! Of course I will be in Toronto in August but you will be in France.
Oh! That's it -- you could write about your plan to stalk Isabelle Huppert for me!! Yes! Good idea!

...I shall soon be in your city. ...when you're not there.
it makes me sad!
however, i know you will come to SF one of these days and I am almost certain I will be back in canada in under 4 to 6 months after this visit at the end of this one.
