I was 32 hours, 37 minutes without power, but who's counting? Mine magically ignited again at 3:47 a.m.
Let's not forget that Oncor is the bastard step child of TXU, who Bethany went ethnic on just two weeks ago... When Oncor split off as the delivery arm to allow TXU to "compete" under deregulation, they applied the SAME crappy customer service methods to the new entity.
It's shameful to treat customers with so little concern and attitudes that border on contempt. My 6th call to them, I attempted to us the "voice" system, as my home, darkened was cave like, and I still had some battery juice left on the cell. The system finally disconntected me as my panting sweaty lips were unable to speak clearly. A "customer service" agent called me back. She scolded me for not having my I-whatever number available. I informed her that I didn't have the number handy, because I COULDN'T FREAKING SEE more than 2 inches in front of my face. BITCH. I asked about status? "Oh, at this point, we haven't even dispatched crews, but were working on it..." That was 10 hours into this nightmare.
I know this was from a storm. Allow me to explore this a bit further. Because this happens every single freaking time we have severe storms, you would think that Oncor would PUT THE LINES IN THE GROUND. I've been told this is expensive...Oh, yeah? Like me throwing out over $1200 of food for the third time in three years. That kind of expensive?
Oncor and TXU have bled the citizens of Texas for years, and they can well afford to ramp up the service and response. Period.
Oh, and people...seriously...there were pockets in between the storms. I realize they can't put someone's life at risk to make repairs, BUT... First storm was 7 to 8 pm Wenesday....next was 3 to 5 am Thursday, next was 8 to 10 ish. It wasn't like at category five storm was sitting over Dallas with an eye span of 200 miles across. This was just another example of a corporation not doing what they could/should do.
Oh, and that $1.20 you want from me to pay for your digital meter snafu. Suck it up, Oncor.

I went without power for five whole days after the Big Storm of '04. 'Member that'un? The one that caused all the flood damage. Well, I didn't suffer flood damage, at least. But suffer I did.
500,000 without electricity. Including me. 300,000 without. Including me. 100,000 without. "All but 25,000 homes have had their power restored ..." "And the local grid is back up and running again, all except for this man [they show my driver's license picture], Daniel, who's in no kind of mood. If you see him, point at him and laugh, 'cause it's funny to see people at the breaking point finally explode in a fearsome stew of bitterness, outrage and homicidal intent, underscored by a neediness that's as elemental as it is pathetic. A TXU spokesman commented, 'We'll get around to it, sure, but don't we deserve a break? I can find you 499,999 people who'd agree that we do.'
"I'm Jane McGarry, and I feel surprisingly fresh and sassy. Next up, neighbors chip in to buy an elderly woman an air-conditioner."
Now here's the kicker: I had an (approx.) 6-month-old infant. You think you got it bad?
Appendix 1: You can get soap at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello?
Appendix 2: $1,200 worth of food, and that's just what's in your refrigerator/freezer? Quite sorry to hear it, but criminy, I'm just wondering how you can fit it all in there. Oddly, this factoid makes me suddenly hungry, and I just ate a fat Mexican meal.
Appendix 3: I didn't, is how. I didn't watch TV, in real life, although I guess I had the Internet at work (cough). Look, I didn't even take hot showers, are you happy?!!
Have a swell weekend, B & A!
