Whether you agree or not, at least the opinions aren't so reactionary and extreme. But that's just Rod, I guess.
In the middle of all this artifice, there was this glimmer of honest human emotion, of rawness, really. It brought home with horrible lucidity just how perverse the whole spectacle was, just how disfiguring celebrity is -- Michael Jackson being an almost mythical personification of that -- and just how crippling it would be to be born into such a distorted life.
Should she have been shielded? Just as Bethany points out, it's doubtful she was to begin with. Oh, and yeah -- there was plenty strange about the man.
P.S. Does anybody else think Rod Dreher is the smuggest bastard on Earth? He makes Wick Allison look like "Walt the Crossing Guard" or something.
Also Mark Davis -- he may be the worst, smuggest smuggly of the smug-smug-smuggermost. Wick Allison is, after all, intelligent and a successful businessman; Rod Dreher is at least intelligent; Mark Davis is an ignoramus to his marrow, a towel-snapping adolescent tripping in his Sunday shoes, a dipenser of truths roughly as unassailable as Jello salad, not-a-thinker-a-doer-by-which-he-means-sayer, a puppety parrot of party lines hiding under a sham machismo and car salesman's civility, or, as they say, a "DJ." (Not "Mr. President." Not anymore.)
Is Rod Dreher even still working for the DMN? If so, what's he doing to justify his salary and benefits? Over on his blog your linking to he seems to be talking about remodeling his house and taking porn polls. All those people got laid off here to subsidize that over there? That's pretty slick.
I believe he's supposed to be on some kind of fellowship to England. But apparently, it's imaginary England.
