Definitely agree here. We need to live and we need to enjoy life. I deliberately allocate a small part of my income for "toys" and "unnecessary luxuries". So long as I keep within this budget I do find that I do not worry about this level of expense. Also, by having a fixed budget for these things, I avoid the mental exercise of justifying more and more expensive luxuries and tend to think very hard about whether I should actually spend the money at all.
I have been using this system for at least five years now and it has worked for every year - until this one when I blew the budget.

This is the issue I wrestle with all the time: the problem was that the "splurges" won out for so long, I can't even afford to think about spending on "non-necessities." Oh, no, I'm thinking about it now -- you've just cost me money. I'm out to get the thoughts out of my head. No, it's true. Goals are a great idea for anything, and I like the idea of rewarding oneself with fun stuff for doing the hard work. Otherwise, come on, how can we continue to do that work.
