Gravatar We don't go out to dinner much, but when we do we try to be a little generous with our tipping. I can't stand it when people sit there and calculate to the penny. Since tax is so high here, we generally double and round it up. Since my kids are older and sometimes go out with dates or friends, I've taught them to do the same thing. Don't put down $3.50. For crying out loud, make it an even $4! Oh...and you've given me a great idea to bring the 'give away' money with me next time we go out!

Gravatar Good Analogy. People get really irrational about leaving tips. But it makes such a big difference to the waitstaff.

Leave a big tip and go back next time. Watch how well you're treated.

Gravatar When we go out to eat, which is kind of rare, we will typically do 20% tips unless service stinks. If it is outstanding, we have no problem leaving more and that always gets a nice response.

Another thing, we tip based on the total but I know some people tip on the pre-tax amount. IMO, I'm in a position to afford eating out and leaving a nice tip and it does give a nice feeling to leave a little extra.
