I think I just found the mother of all liberal country songs.

- Johnny Cash, "Don't Take Your Guns Town." Clearly a vote for the Brady Bill.
- Johnny Cash, "The One on the Left is On the Right." Describes how people of various political persuasions can coexist in the same folksinging group.
Also Patsy Cline's "Crazy" could be a plea for affordable mental health care, but I don't quite think so.

Obviously Miller has never read Chris Willman's book "Rednecks and Bluenecks".
You could make your whole list with just Steve Earle songs:
"So come back, Emma Goldman
Rise up, old Joe Hill
The barracades are goin' up
They cannot break our will
Come back to us, Malcolm X
And Martin Luther King
We're marching into Selma
As the bells of freedom ring"
--Christmas in Washington
"Jimmy joined the army ‘cause he had no place to go
There ain’t nobody hirin’
‘round here since all the jobs went
down to Mexico
Reckoned that he’d learn himself a trade maybe see the world
Move to the city someday and marry a black haired girl
Somebody somewhere had another plan
Now he’s got a rifle in his hand
Rollin’ into Baghdad wonderin’ how he got this far
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war"
--Rich Man's War
