No pictures of my first completed knitting project as it happened 47 years ago. I learned to knit when I was 11 and soon after started a tennis sweater -- the classic kind with cables, white, with a narrow stripe of red and one of blue around the bottom and on the cuffs. It was for me. It was sport weight yarn, wool from Bernat I think. It took almost 3 years to finish. I wore it for a while when I started high school and then it disappeared somewhere into the mists of time.

1st project was a stocking cap my beloved mother in law taught me how to make for my 1st son. from then on it was just a matter of finding patterns and practice, practice, practice. i now make shawls, blankets, socks, (a lot of socks) and xmas presents for my sweet sister in law and her daughter and daughter in law. my mother in law is now gone but her love for knitting lives on thru the things i can create because she took the time to teach me how to knit, crochet, and sew.

The first thing I knit to completion was a hoodie for my Neatnik. It was knit from chunky navy blue LB WoolEase and it no longer exists. The neck opening was too snug and I eventually frogged it. But I have a thumbnail picture of it!

Happy Blogiversary! My first 20 completed knitting projects were all identical, and I have no photos. Garter stitch scarves in Lion Brand homespun (can you imagine why I didn't have a blog to thoroughly document?) for pretty much everyone I knew . . . then I branched out. I know my college roommate still uses hers, and my dad's is in his closet. Other than that, I really couldn't say . . .

I don't have a picture of it but I made a deep purple, baby blue, and pink turtle neck front zip poncho as my first project 38 yrs ago. My grandmother should have been made a saint for fixing all my mistakes. And yes it was that awful acrylic in awful colors but I wore it to death for about 6 months until ponchos were out.

I'm so impressed that your first project was a sweater and an EZ to boot.
I did the requisite scarf or two, but my first real project was a sweater from Jean Frost Jackets. It was a really simple stockinette cardigan that I did in LionBrand Microspun on #4 needles. Oy. The knitting is surprisingly even, but the sewing in of the sleeves was messy, at best. I wear it around the house, but it's never been out in public.

Happy Blogaversary! I decided to teach myself to knit in February 2006 because I saw some patterns for felted bags that I just loved. I got my pattern, purchased yarn and googled "how to knit" on the computer. LOL Off I went and haven't looked back since. My first project was a felted bag which I thought was terrific! It took me quite a while to figure it all out, but felting hides a myriad of mistakes. My DH thought it looked great and proudly showed pictures of it to his co-workers. The bag was purchased by one of these co-workers and now resides at their house!
Here's a link to the picture, finished Feb 2006:

You have to remember that I was 7 years old when I first learned how to knit. So basically all I did was knit squares that I used for blankets for my stuffed animals. I don't have any pictures of those squares and none of them survived my childhood.
I later went on to knit disastrous sweaters that fell apart after wearing them or that were impossible to pull over past the shoulders. I just didn't understand the concept of gauge at the age of 11.
I'm amazed that I stuck with knitting after all of that.

Happy Blogiversary. I think my first comment was eaten so let me do this again. My first project was 20 years ago when I was 10. A garter stitch scarf with Red Heart that my Grandmother showed me how to do. It was a lesson in finding my natural gauge. I had completed many crochet projects before that so the knitting wasn't too bad.

1st - don't put me in the contest (I've been having way too much luck winning contests lately) but I want to wish you a happy blogiversary! My first knit item was when I was 10 years old - one lime green mitten with a white mohair deer on the back of the hand. I have no pictures - oh well - it WAS pretty cool!

No link because there is no picture and it was preblogging. My first completed project during my second knitting phase (I can't remember what my first project during my teenage phase was) was a blue wool scarf for myself. It is somewhere in this apartment in a partially felted condition. I can't tell you where, but if I find it I will blog it!

I don't remember the first thing I knitted; I wasn't old enough to go to school yet, so it was probably either a scarf or a doll blanket! And lord only knows where it's at some 50+ years later! But I do know where my oldest FO is: on the back of my chair at work! It's a top down raglan cardigan in blue variegated acrylic that I knit while watching the news every night during the First Gulf War in 1990. It no longer has buttons and one of the patch pockets came off and got lost, but it sure is comfortable!

Happy blogiversary!
I'm pretty sure that my first completed knitting project was a simple roll-brim hat knit from Di.Vé Fiamma (bulky thick & thin single ply). I knit on size 10.5 needles, which was quite a bit too big since I am a sloppy loose knitter. I'm sure it's still somewhere, floating around in my front closet, but I haven't worn it in ages, if ever.

Happy Blogoversary! Thanks for a fun contest. My first completed project was a knitted pincushion. I'm still using it, although I don't have a link. It's been across the country with me several times and I wouldn't dream of parting with it.

Sorry no picture, but it was in '95. My first project was a pair of knee high socks for my husband. (BTW... he is 6'6" and has a sz 16 foot) They were being made for our reenactments (rev. war era) since he wanted a nice pair that would fit him better. I had no clue about different yarns and such so I grabbed some wool ease and went to town. It took quite a while, but I finished them. I was so happy to have them done so that he could wear them. He wore them a total of 3 times before the heels completely wore through. He didn't want to tell me because he knew how hard I worked on them. Finally he gou up the nerve and I was so upset that they didn't last. I thought that it was me. So I never knit another stitch until I found out I was pregnant with James. I ended up hearing of a LYS in my town so I went there for yarn and learned that some yarns are not good for socks and I should have used something different. So it wasn't my kntting per se. Since then I have knit and not looked back, now that I know that there are yarns made for different things.

Mine is boring -- and it bored me. It was a scarf in Wool Ease Thick & Quick. http://mapleontheweb.com/?p=46 It was eventually frogged because I got bored before it got long enough and became a neck gaiter -- which was too big and that got frogged. And the yarn is somewhere waiting to become another project which I have no doubt will be frogged too. I certainly got my money's worth from the yarn. Two projects and still going.

No pictures of my first FO because it didn't occur to me to take them. At that time I had no idea I would get hooked or want to keep a journal of the stuff that wasn't crap. Anyway, I made a blanket for a friend's baby. It was yellow, acrylic (maybe TLC, maybe not) and the pattern came from one of those Leisure Arts books. Gauge: didn't matter; Blocking: um, didn't know about it; Weaving in ends: hmmm, I think I did; Where is it now: no idea. I assume the mom used it for the baby but not so sure!

My first project was a garter stitch scarf in dark navy worsted acrylic. It still resides with the winter wear in the basket waiting for the snow to fly again. I still put my finger through the dropped stitch in the 3rd row every time I wear it. I knit it in 1989 when I was 17.

I can kick myself for not photographing my first (real) project, for I have only thrown it away this spring, because of the desintegration of the cufs. It was a sweater with snowcristal motif and I was very proud of it. I was about 16 at the time and so it must have been 1984 ish. I have worn it almost every winter since then and it really filled me with joy every time I took it out of the closet again.

My first project was a red Charlotte Bronte shawl-is that still on the web? Anyway, I still have it-it lives on the top shelf of my closet in a large ziploc. The triangular shape drives me a little crazy now that I know the joy of faroe shaping, but it turned out well, and I'll always be grateful to it for not backfiring on me like so many first projects do.

It is! I found the pattern at redbirdknits. It was free way back when. Ah, fond memories :~) I think I went back to the yarn shop for one more skein at least four times.

No pics for me either. My first project was a pair of ugly yellow acrylic mittens and a matching tam. Never wore either of them. I did however get a best in class at the 4-H show. I'm not sure if they are in my basement yet or not.

My first completed project was Calorimetry for my sister. Last I knew, she has not worn it, but maybe that will change this year. I made it after she told me she lost her headband only to find it later in a slushy puddle near where she usually parked her car. You can see a picture of it here.

My first knitting project was an afghan for my niece. I loved working on it, but the pattern was a bit misleading. It was flagged as an "easy" pattern...but it certainly wasn't quick. Each row took about an hour to complete and there were 440 rows. But it sure did turn out pretty and I missed it when it was finally complete. http://hopalong682003.livejourna...l.com/

Hey Jen,
My first project was an acrylic Christmas stocking for my son, who was then 10 years old! I had taken knitting lessons from such a wonderful lady named Molly.
Naturally I was running up to the LYS for help, but somehow managed to knit the stocking, all the while with yarn bobbins hanging down in various colors.
The stocking has red, white, and green with children holding hands, a Christmas tree, and a Santa and of course, my son was thrilled.
I'll look for a picture but I'm not sure I have one, since it was made many moons ago.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

I have no picture, both because I have no digital camera and because the project was boring: a garter-stitch-on-the-diagonal dishcloth. I finished it in an afternoon and my hands hurt for a few days after - I didn't know until then that I was knitting too tightly. That was last year, and I think my mom is still using it, so it's probably in a drawer at home.
Happy blog birthday!

Happy blogiversary!!! I'm a bit late as always-time is not easy to be found around here. Especially not for reading my favorite blogs. Anyway, my first completed project was back when I was in 6th grade. I joined a knitting club at school with all the other geeks and made my first baby booties. My mother was an avid knitter and I'm sure she was the one who showed me how to knit, but those booties are the first thing I really remember being so proud of. Man, my knitting sure has progressed since then and the only thing that I'm positive to have learned in my two years+ of blogging is that I will never learn all there is to learn about knitting.
