i think you're right about not knowing what to say when something like this does happen. there's nothing that can be said. everyone knows what's going on. but nobody can say i know because that can seem callous. even if it's not meant to be. because that wasn't your mother. or that wasn't your wife. or your sister. you don't know because your relationship with that individual was different. the only way someone can help with the grieving process is by being with that person. not even pampering that person but just sticking around. maybe even being a distraction. may Allah swt make this time easy for you and your friend
