I've had some reservations about some of Jerry Falwell's position on various issues or, at least, the wording of them... but I agree with you that, at the end of the day, it is not 'our' opinion that matters nor the opinion of media commentators, but the judgement of Christ. And since the measure we use for others will be used for us, it's always better to temper our comments with mercy and compassion.
