i'm not shocked by this report at all. there are people who consider themselves 'good christians' who baulk at the thought of embracing anyone who doesn't fit their mold into their community. i experienced it first hand 25years ago by the parisioners treating a young mentally ill couple (that we as a family had welcomed with open arms) with distrust. it made me feel sick inside and i haven't returned to organised church since.
i'm with you on the 100% there birdy.

A lot of my dear old friends dealt with my depression in a very inbteresting way - they pretended I didn't exist! That's an interesting attitude...

Actually, reading felicity's comment [above], I have a very very similar experience myself. If you don;'t fit into their 'worldview/empire structure/how you should be', then you simply don't exist! Interesting reactions, aren't they...?!?

It saddens me to no end that society stigmatizes those with a mental illness to the depth and degree that it does. How ironic that in this politically correct age, we replace terms like handicapped and crippled with physically challenged or differently abled because we're deathly afraid of offending folks with a physical disability.
But all bets seem to be off if the illness lies between the ears. Then it's seemingly OK to make fun, to separate and humiliate, to vilify.
We just don't get it. I fear we may never get it.
Still, I'm heartened that you've had the courage to write so eloquently about it. The world needs your voice.

I'm constantly amazed at what the average human can find to be a bigot about. Very depressing article, but important to read if those of us with any brain-cells are actually going to try to change the way some people think. I'd certainly rather have a "disabled" person live next to me than a morally handicapped twit.
Great blog, BTW.
