Fabulous!!

Wow! I love it. Lauren is amazing.

Very chic and functional. I love the new color scheme. I second what Cindy said, Lauren is amazing.

Nice!

it's ...bitchin'

oh wow, that is an *awesome* image. Where did you find it?

Yeah, the little girl in the background with the "Oh no you DIDN'T!" expression is great.

It's lovely! But that Bitch Ph.D. text needs some anti-aliasing, stat.

Very nice. Wasn't like this at 6 am!
Love the pic.

nicely done. it captures the essence of all that is "b."

Thank you all. Yes, it was putting the girl in the background into the image that I changed my mind about; without her, it was a little too "angry little girl on the edge of tears." I found the image by googling a series of phrases--"bitch," "feminist," etc.--this one turned up on "fuck off."

Re. the anti-aliasing, that's my fault. It was nice and clean, but I wanted the title to also function as a link, so changing that kinda jagged up the font. On the up side, it'll probably display better at lower resolutions, but if anyone wants to write me and 'splain how to fix it, I'll see what I can do.

safari doesnt seem to like it.

It's awesome! Congrats on the new look!

Ok, email me. B/c it displays fine in Safari on my machine... tell me what os and resolution you're using.

Thanks for the archives.

Looks terrific on my computer. (Using Firefox on a Mac.) But I am sad that we don't match any longer ....

it looks incredibly, lauren did a fabulous job!

It's YOU.

But I hope I and others aren't permanantly de-blogrolled. :-(

No, no! The blogroll is still there, Lauren just did a li'l clever javascript b/c it's so long. click on the little (+) underneath each subcategory and it'll pop right up.

Fancy, fancy. I love it.

Very nice...and I'm using Safari, and I don't see any problems.

I want to know what that kid is mad about.

Maybe she doesn't want her picture taken.

Wow. Looking good. The image is excellent!

I absolutely love it!

Very nice - cool, clean design.

Now must resist breaking my own template trying to reformat it.

LOVE. THAT. PICTURE.

Very cool...nice job Lauren!

I'm using Safari and it seems to work just fine for me.

When I read on the RSS feed that you changed your mind on the image at the last minute, I was afraid you had changed it from this. But you haven't.

Congratulations.

To second what Denise said, the aliasing of the title is making my eyes bleed. Somebody, please, make it stop!

Got it. I nevered did claim to be too smart with this internet contraption. Dr. ER just walked by and loves the pic, too!

Reading up, I see this has already been discussed. Apologies. Not sure what making it a link has to do with the anti-aliasing, since whther an image is wrapped with anchor tags is entirely irrelevent to how it's rendered by whatever image editing program you're employing.

If you have any questions, would like some advice on it, or whatever, just drop me a line or reply here. Happy to help out.

I don't know if it's just me, but for a while now on the blog itself it says that you have 0 comments for every entry, and then I click on a comment link and there are all the comments. Does anyone else have this problem? It was like that with the old template and it's still like that.

Love. it.

works well for me too. I love the look, really easy to read and deal with. Plaudits to you both, aesthetics and functionality.

The hidden blogroll entries don't work too well, though, since when you return from visiting one they've been rehidden and the [+] sign to get them back is all the way up the page.

Statelessness is overrated.

Becca, from what I've read over on the haloscan forums, the comment issue has to do with them moving to a new server and should be fixed at some point.

Benedict, I think I've figured out what's up with the font--the .gif that's displaying needs to be anti-aliased. I think I thought, from talking to Lauren, that it was a question of the title being actual text, rather than an image. I'll see if I or Lauren can clean it up.

Jim, I *think* (and this may be browser dependent, not sure) that when you click back from visiting a link, you should go back to exactly *where* on my page you were--i.e., not back to the top of the page, but back to the middle (where yeah, you need to reclick the + sign to bring the blogroll back). I confess I didn't think of that problem, though, b/c I always use tabbed browsing anyway.

Looks wonderful. Well done!

I've got the zeroed comments thing as well, but that's not so unusual with Haloscan-run commenting.

By the way, I'm using Safari 2.0 and everything functions as expected.

It is frickin' amazing! Beautiful job!

Gor-Geous.

Nice look!

Nice looking website! :D

Beautiful! Love the image up top.

Thanks guys.

I changed the title image -- tell me if it looks better. I have to figure out the comments on the archives tonight, but in the meantime, thank you for all the nice words.

Looks great. I've been a fan of Lauren's work ever since she fixed up the ">Liberal Avenger site.

One quirk I noticed is that on the permalink pages, the link to the comments doesn't seem to be showing up. I'm assuming this is not intentional.

I'm using Firefox for Windows.

Oops, never mind - Lauren posted while I was writing mine.

Looks great!

FYI: The comments in the archives are fixed. They should now appear in the single page posts.

I am entranced by the juxtaposition and utterly perfect balance of the “messages” in the declarative image now at the top of your site.

As an intuitive, I am easily ensorcelled by powerful metaphors. And you’ve chosen the most incandescent to grace your cathedral of words.

Every pixel of the young woman’s body screams “speaking truth to power” with the same unmovable inner conviction that held the world transfixed at Tiananmen Square, China in 1989. An adversary might beat her, but no one and nothing will never defeat her.

And the sublime delight of the mature feminine Goddess behind and supporting the fabric of the created phenomenal world.

You have given each of us an idealized image of our inner Self. I wish I was that determined and that brave. In every moment. Okay, even once a day.

Thanks for living the example of what we can be.

Brilliantly conceived and consummately executed.

Simply, thank you.

/e

I like it!

The anti-aliased text looks 100% better. Hooray!

Now all you need is a favicon.

You people and your favicons. I hate making those.

Nice job, I really like the photos of your banner!

Heh, Dadahead, you can do me a favicon. I didn't ask Lauren, and she's already done what I'm paying her for

Oh hey, I think I figured out what the deal was with the anti-aliasing before. The original header had the button against a transparent background (so if you narrow the window, the title would show up over the image of the little girls)--hence, the anti-aliasing didn't have anything to blend with. Now it's a black background, so the title font looks smoother, but the tradeoff is if you make the window real narrow, you black out the little girls.

Moral of the story: don't use teeny-tiny narrow windows to read my blog, or you'll piss off that little girl even more

Looks great!

This is fantastic. I'ma have to start saving my money to have Lauren redo my joint.

My guess: someone asked the little girl why she doesn't like nice boys.

Great look!

Spiffy new look, it fits perfectly. And thanks to Lauren for letting us know that chicks dig dudes with CSS skills. Another secret uncovered.

Cool beans.

I really love the new look--especially the image at the top. But I'm glad I saw the whole picture earlier today, since now the other girl's face is covered up by the black background. This happens no matter how big I make the window. Maybe it's just my browser (Netscape 7.1), since it sounds like other folks aren't having this problem.

What a great pic! Lookin' real good.

Looks good!

Helenesch, if you keep having the problem, would you email me and let me know? It occurs to me it might just be a cache problem in your browser--if you restart it, does it keep doing that?

*Love* it!

I've decided I hate it. Every time some site I regularly visit redoes their layout and makes everything all pretty, I start itching to do the same to mine. It stirs up deep urges to tinker. I hate those deep urges. Cease stimulating me, O Temptress!

LOL. The siren call of the new blog design.

"Oh my God, where am I? I must be in Blog Heaven!" Cue the celestial music.
Big time, B., big time.

the framing isnt working for me on safari

Which Safari? Panther or Tiger? I'm using Tiger, and all looks well.

i use safari and panther and all is well--fabuuuu site!

All fine in Safari 1.3. OS X 10.3.

the new looks rocks and for the record, i just started reading your site a few weeks ago after a link on pandagon or feministing, and i love it! thanks for blogging!

Oh. Wow.

What an image to wake up to! Holy shit.

I keep giggling, it's just so wonderful.

And I too am getting obviously incorrect zeroes next to "comment" but it hasn't happened to me before the redesign (using Mozilla, btw). Will assume the moved server is the explanation and that your entire crew of commenters hasn't suddenly disappeared!

PZ -- whatever you do to your site, please don't take away the array of animal images in the upper lefthand corner. They *so* rock.

ooh, great new look

Nice -- the look of the site, though it shouldn't, really affects how I read the text. This works much better with your writing than the blocky orangeness.

Nice design, *love* that image. Who are they? Where, when, why? The little birdflipper doesn't look to me like she's on the edge of tears, she looks like she's angry and determined and fearless and probably gets called "a tomboy" and "naughty" and I hope she grows up to be POTUS.

Love this blog. The photo is certainly attention-getting. But...well, am I the only one who doesn't especially appreciate being flipped off by a child every time I hit this page? I'm all for righteous female anger and everything, but still. Guess I'm just old. Never mind me.

Looks great! Kudos to Lauren.

The new design is gorgeous, although i got the shock of my life when i opened Bloglines to see a 12" tall granny face in your post! You might try re-sizing your images in a photo package rather than in HTML, they'll download much faster and not give me granny shock!

Oh shit, you're right, that's huge! Noted for future reference :P

Is it my imagination, or was the name of this site formerly Bitch, Ph.d.? I think the comma makes the name stronger, that is, it's then the voice of Bitch who by the way has a Ph.D. rather that the voice of a Ph.D. who is a bitch. The person is more important than the credential.

I'm with nicky on the photo. my first reaction, the first time i saw it, was "whoa, looks like a serious upgrade." yes, it's startling.

what is it, "portrait of the Bitch as a young girl"? or just "precocious vulgarity"? It doesn't exactly say "enter here for spirited and reasoned discourse."

Having read the comment thread, I see I'm clearly in the minority on this. That suggests that perhaps it's a filtration device?

Well, I am sorry that it's not to everyone's taste, but you can't please all the people all the time. If it filters people out, that's regrettable, I suppose; but I suppose the title alone filters people out, too. C'est la vie.

ok, the image comes up if you search for "fuck off" on google images, but it no longer seems to be on the page google says it comes from, the journal of a musician named Max Fischer hosted by minilifemusic.com.

I want backstory!

It's not taste, and yes, there's no accounting for it, it's the message that I find odd. Why associate a child with the title "Bitch"? Why choose a child as your de facto mascot?

Is feminism about rebellion, or is it about leadership?

Is it time for feminism to grow up? Which I know is a deeply offensive suggestion, and it is certainly unworthy of your site, but believe me, I never thought it until I started thinking about that photo.

Is this putting way too much weight on the photo? Well, probably not--you must have tens of thousands of page views every week. Whatever is in that position becomes iconic.

Meh, not working too well in Explorer. (For preference I'd use Firefox, but my company is positively antediluvian in its IT policies.)

I'm using Safari and a picture of Bill Maher, among others, are blocking the right hand side of your page with all the links, no matter how big I expand the window. Am I the only one with this problem?

Your page is fantastic! Wonderful graphics/design to go with the (always) wonderful, funny, thoughtful writing. One question: The picture looks too real to be stock; are you the one displaying your defiance or the one just enjoying the defiance?

Rick: Feminism is about a lot of things, including both rebellion and leadership. The two are not mutually exclusive. BPhD's choice of a photo with two young girls -- one startlingly defiant, the other expressing either unabashed glee at her friend's audacity or unmitigated disbelief at whatever or whoever is being flipped off (or both) -- sends the message that our tender young daughters are not going to grow up mindlessly accepting the bullshit their mothers and grandmothers had to.

When posters come here and get all condescending and patriarchal, they're being thus put on notice. Some of the posts I've read on this site lately are making me understand the concept much more fully. In fact, BPhD, please disregard my former post. I'm liking this image better and better every time I see it.

P.S. -- and let me also add: not mindless accepting the b.s. their mothers and grandmothers... "and greatgrandmothers, and great-great-grandmothers, and so on back into forever and ever" had to.

Heh, Nicky, thank you.

Those having problems with various browsers: we've tested the site on Explorer and Firefox on a PC and on Safari, Explorer, and Firefox on a Mac. I haven't tested it on Opera or any of the smaller browsers b/c I don't have access, and I don't have Netscape so I haven't tested that either (Lauren may have tested it on Netscape on her PC, I forgot to ask b/c I forgot that people still use Netscape).

In other words, if you're having problems with one of the tested browsers, all I can assume is that it's some problem on your end, because honestly, it seems to be working fine in every browser I've tested it on.

Looks real good, lady.
YOur friend did a good job.
Yep, real nice.

Like it. A lot.

Looks nice. Well done Lauren.

I agree with the comma-entator.

Bring back the comma! Bring back the comma! Bring back the comma!

(Sorry, among my many daily real-world tasks is copyediting. Which is why you see so many typos in my comments and on my blog. When I'm off, I am OFF.)

That picture makes me smile every time I come here. Thanks.

I absolutely LOVE the pic. She doesn't look to me like she's about to leak any tears.

I should note though that the second face in the pic can't be seen on my monitor without taking the trouble to right-click and view background image. I suspect that this is caused by image designed for optimum viewing pleasure on a monitor that is bigger than mine -- a dinky 15".

Not sure that there's anything (practical) that can be done about that; not that I'm complaining ...
