Good fruit kicks ass. Its just tough to identify in the store. There are very few guaranteed enjoyable fruit experiences. I can pretty much only rely on Clementine (sic?) oranges.
You certainly can't tell by the look. Ive seen some beautiful apples that just sucked. OK, I'll buy the ugly ones... Damn! mushy and tasteless. And don't get me started on oranges. What am I gonna get? Sweet? Dry? Seeds? think/thick skin? tough to peal?
I made a rash decision the other day and passed up on a 2 for 1 bag of oranges deal and went for the high priced 'organic' bag of oranges. Score! Easy to peal, sweet, juicy and no seeds.
I'd really rather the store sell whats good and in season rather than trying to provide everything 365.

If I recall correctly, supermarket produce in your fair city of Chicago is often terrible.

As a young woman, my grandmother was one of David's secretaries (she spent her teen years on the family farm in Ashland, OR, outside of Medford). She fondly recalls the day that she opened and read a letter from Eleanor Roosevelt praising the pears.
It was the closest our family ever got to power.

LH -- Do you have any family insight into what sort of genetic gerrymandering goes into those pears? They're so good it's creepy.
