The global warming deniers are so fond of a strawman argument as well. I keep hammering away that a carbon tax could be used to replace some other tax. If so done, we should not weigh the cost of such a tax against the threat potential of global warming, we should look at the net cost: cost of tax minus the benefits of cutting some other tax or reducing budget deficits.
Given that a carbon tax would be far simpler than either income, sales, or labor taxes, we might well be better off with a carbon tax even if global warming were a complete fabrication of Al Gore.
