I loved Tom Snyder, though more so in his bizarre '70s NBC heyday than in his more recent post-Letterman CBS show.

He was a fascinating interviewer as well as a fascinating personality. TV rarely affords a place for talented people who are truly one or the other. We almost never get anyone who's both.
