Gravatar There's one easy and simplistic solution, Bleu: have one bus lane for all buses, with special 'passing places' for the limited stop busway.

There'd be no need for busway lanes and bridges to the central medians where they've plonked rickety bridges and shelters. As long as cars, trucks and motorbikes kept out of these bus lanes and bus crews were paid a regular, guaranteed salary, public transport would run more smoothly.

The vast amount spent (and corrupted) on the busway system could have been spent on such a system. The sums spent on the minimal capital outlay required would probably leave a big enough surplus for new buses.

BTW. I'm in favour of the Busway and think the benefits will be clear in a couple of years. It's just, like so much else here, no-one thought about immediate effects and later consequences.

Gravatar your calculations are the exact calculations me and my dad talk about every time we're driving home from work. we rehearse them over and over again every time the traffic in front of us is getting out of hand and literally almost blow our heads off.

but i guess before we even go into the calculations, i don't think the percentage of busway user will increase significantly (i mean of course it will increase, but won't be in proportion of the length of road "sacrified" for the development of busway, as calculated).

i personally think busway, in essence, is effective to keep the busway users keep using the busway (now more convenient with new "coridors")... but is not effective in attracting non-busway users to use the facility.

busway exists not because of the increasing demand of public transportation... it exists because... hell i don't know why. it was just suddenly there hahahah.

I agree with Jakartass, just work with whatever we've already got. If TransJakarta bus can have salaried drivers, why can't it be applied to PPD bus drivers? When PPD can introduce bus schedules, ensure the buses come on time, and improve their buses (more Patas AC would be great), we can give them the exclusive bus way they already have now (a.k.a the 'jalur lambat')- voila, we'll have the "busway" for peanuts.

I guess our aspiring president Suti must have tought, "Why pay less?"

I agree with the solution; I think it will help. But don't we already have slow-lanes - if that's close enough to the one bus lane? I guess we have to manage the lane a bit differently... which is not as "capital extensive" as creating this busway project. It will probably be a hard sell

Gravatar Busway is just an alternative of transportation mode. It will not will not solve traffic congestion in Jakarta.

It's just like other "partial-thingking" projects, which will be benefecial for a small amount of citizen.

Latest annoucement from local authority, private cars can use busway lane (???). So...? again another absurd decision...

Oh .. what the hell... I still love Jakarta with its traffic, nightlife, hundred police (polisi cepek).. you name it.

Gravatar you know, as a person who's never good with numbers, i think you've done a terrific calculation there.

if busway can't help much in traffic congestions, i'd say the government should press those who ride cars by... i don't know, prolly increase parking fees?

and i think the busway lanes are better used by motorcycles. in my opinion, these days motorcycles are also the major contributor of traffic congestion, due to their (read: some) sick devil-may-care attitude. no offense to motorcycle riders.
