Larry,
What's it like being a mental patient? Here's a strategy you might employ, and I promise you it works better than attempted blackmail:
Win an election.
Of course there's a "junta" in Washington and the race is fixed and yada yada yada. A Democrat wins election, all of democracy is saved. A Republican wins, well it was fixed. Biggest loser mentality I can think of. Remarkably, if a Democrat wins in 08, I guess the forces of evil were magically repelled...for four years until the country votes in another Republican.
You guys really are the fringe on a number of levels. So when you're finished villifying someone for being gay (chew on that hypocrisy for a while, homophobe) enjoy President Jeb Bush's admin. Anonymous | Email | Homepage | 01.30.06 - 11:41 pm Direct link to this comment

I am conservative and could care less if someone else is gay. Don't care, does not influence my vote.
What I find fascinating is how the left would seek to do personal harm to a man because he is gay, which is at the very least "anti-gay", which is what you accuse the right of being, which means you are projecting, which is psychotic.
Either way, if you want to bring forward the allegation against a sitting US Senator without hard evidence, you are going to draw extreme legal and media fire from the right and the left who will equally see you as a threat. I feel in love with the Advise and Consent series that was mentioned many replies back on this thread. Allen Drury made an impact on my reading habits and so I use his name as my blog cover name.
But none of his creations could ever come near the horrible actions that the GOP undertakes daily against gay people in America. No other group would get treated this way in our country today without total hell breaking loose! That is why this site is right on target and getting more readers every day.
These bastards that want to ruin my life and those of my gay brothers through undermining the Constitution must understand that we too know how to use the forces of the media and internet. We can subject them to the same type of action they use against us.

The only person it could be is John Ensign (R-NV), who's up for re-election this year (I can only assume that's why you're bringing this up now and not waiting later). He couldn't vote for the filibuster today because he was in that car accident, so that would be why Michael didn't threaten him today, but he is expected to vote tomorrow. One would assume that Michael would out the likes of Santorum, Hatch, Lott, etc., whenever he had proof. Also, while Michael says he would out anyone who voted for Alito and FMA, he would have no problem outing anyone who previously voted for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as well. All of the other married male GOP Senators up for re-election this year voted for DOMA (Talent as a Congressman, the rest as Senators), except George Allen (VA Governor at the time, plus since he's a frontrunner GOP prez candidate, Michael would have outed him already if he had proof) and Ensign, who was a Congressman at the time but did not cast a vote. Mike's work on several other outing efforts have demonstrated that he doesn't make idle threats. Often.
The congressman in Virginia retired rather than fight the news. The problem was that no national media paid attention. There remains a conspiracy of silence in the media, which is cowed by the right wing.
Dreier, Melman and others have a free pass on this which allows them to avoid questions of their lack of integrity demonstrated by their utter hypocrisy.
Mike needs to find a way of forcing the world to pay attention. Very difficult. While the media in the Senator's home state will pay attention, the TV networks, the New York Times or the Washington Post will not. And yet all too often, that's where our national discussion begins. I don't know how to change it, though there are surely people who do. Even if you march up and down Pennsylvania Avenue with poster pictures of him with his dick out being sucked off by a rent boy, the media would ignore it. No question. His wife would prefer to avoid the scandal. Evidence will get him out of the race, as with the Virginia guy, but alone will not provoke the national discussion of the grotesque hypocricy of the Republican party. I don't think many people who post here are truly aware of just how deep and wide this battle has become. And just how important blogActive has become in this battle.
These are dark times. We have Quislings in both the Republican and Democratic parties. And the most extreme factions of the Religious Right have a sympathetic ear in the White House.
The most obvious media, such as the New York Times, will ignore our stories only for as long as we allow them to ignore our stories.
Is it possible that gay men and women might willingly participate in a sit-in in front of the New York Times in Manhattan, or in front of the Associated Press offices in Washington, D.C.?

You're absolutely right -- it is a declaration of cultural war to oppose gay marriage. Whoever this senator is, he is shirking his Constitutional duty to support it -- in spite of the near certainty that a majority of his constituents oppose gay marriage by a significant margin too. He's a US Senator, damn it, and it's his job to coerce the people into positions they don't share.
But hey, you've got dirt, and you've gotta blackmail where you have the ability, right? Much better to spend your efforts there than to make an effort to persuade your countrymen to your point of view. Reasonable Thesis | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 5:01 am Direct link to this comment

Interesting post, the National review has an interesting response from section 22-3252 of the District of Columbia Code:
(a) A person commits the offense of blackmail, if, with intent to obtain property of another or to cause another to do or refrain from doing any act, that person threatens:
(1) To accuse any person of a crime;
(2) To expose a secret or publicize an asserted fact, whether true or false, tending to subject any person to hatred, contempt, or ridicule; or
(3) To impair the reputation of any person, including a deceased person.
(b) Any person convicted of blackmail shall be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both.

This is just slimey to be honest. I'm a Dem, I'm furious about what happened, but unless someone is honest about their own sexuality and is a hypocrite, then this kind of outing and threatening is frankly, pretty gross.
If you are basing this on rumours with no proof and no SWORN proof then it's just stupid. And even if the person did do this, it's still pretty damned sleazy. This just isn't right. And besides, if you wanted to pressure someone then do it all the way, rather than basing it on vague threats. WE lost the vote. What good will this do now? WHAT POSSIBLE GOOD DOES THIS DO? What I find so interesting about the comments on this site is that only the individuals on the left feel the need to resort to meaningless expletives to add power to their arguments. One person suggested that a lack of basic education was the reason for the rise of conservatism in American, but the conservatives, whether they post anonymously or not, are the ones capable of making a statement without peppering it with four-letter words.
As for me, I support Judge (now JUSTICE) Alito, the DOMA and other legislation that is aimed at protecting traditional families. As a gay, Roman Catholic, who struggles every day to avoid the temptations that confront me, I know it's difficult for people to deal with the fact that "gay lifestyles" are harmful to children, families and communities.
It's a difficult row we have to hoe. We can either submit to our baser instincts and hope that everything we have been taught by Christian religions is wrong, that God doesn't care and that we can "do whatever feels good" because God loves everyone, or we can accept that, while God is a merciful God, he's also a just God. He will expect us to answer for our actions, good and bad.
It is we, in choosing to ignore his commandments, that separate ourselves from Him, not the other way around.
If you spent more time trying to engage people in your ideas, trying to explain where perceptions are wrong and where your ideas are right, you may win elections. If the best you can do to you opposition is to insult and villify them, you will never succeed. Of course, when likening someone to you is considered an insult, you start from a bad position. keith | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 9:13 am Direct link to this comment

Ah David...
You know, I really pity people whose lives are so empty, so devoid of any greater meaning, that they feel the need to attack and slander religions.
In fact, David, I did turn my back on my Church, for twenty years. I decided that the Church was wrong to condemn me for what I am.
After twenty years of misery thinking that my pleasure was all that mattered, I returned to the faith in 2005 and my life has been better every day since.
I am not tortured, I am challenged. I know it's very hard for people with such an empty worldview to understand challenge, but I do. I don't look at the tension in my life as a bad thing, but as a gift. How many people live lives that lack any great challenge, anything to overcome.
Instead, God gives me the grace and strength to overcome every day. God has taught me, that in spite of that fact that I don't condone what you do in bed, that doesn't mean that I think you are an evil person. There is nothing I would like more than to be at the Paschal banquet with everyone who posts here.
I know that we disagree. Some of those disagreements come from deeply held convictions. Some of us, myself included, believe that there are fundamental, concrete morals that are immutable. Others embrace a culture or moral relativism. In those instances, we will never reach an understanding. However, there is no reason for either side to resort to name calling, insults or threats.
On other issues, we see the same needs, we differ on the way to achieve those needs. In those instances, it's incumbent on both sides to be civil and try to deal with those questions.
Regardless, I do hope that your life finds a meaning beyond yourself. If you already have, please forgive my ignorance and presumption. I merely expressed my opinion on the basis of past experience with people who have expresed the same sentiments.
God bless. keith | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 10:00 am Direct link to this comment

Good for you - I am still amazed (and mention this frequently in discussions with Democratic members of the Senate) that there were 4 gay and lesbian members of the US Senate when it passed DOMA and ALL 4 VOTED IN FAVOR OF DOMA!
Your work has amazing effects - not only did David Dreier finally oppose a homophobic piece of legislation after you outed him (he voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment last time) but also, depsite being designation by Denny Hastert to be the acting majority leader in the US House after Delay stepped away, the Republican caucus revolted - I guess they read the blogs also and had no desire to be led by a gay man. Via National Review's The Corner:
As set forth on Lexis - Nexis, section 22-3252 of the District Columbia Code provides:
(a) A person commits the offense of blackmail, if, with intent to obtain property of another or to cause another to do or refrain from doing any act, that person threatens:
(1) To accuse any person of a crime;
It appears the author of the BlogActive post has threatened, with "intent to . . . cause another to do or refrain from doing any act," to "expose a secret or publicize an asserted fact, whether true or false, tending to subject any person to hatred, contempt, or ridicule."
I'm assuming the D.C. Code applies because the BlogActive website lists a D.C. post office box for contributions.
Of course, whether the legal definition of blackmail has been satisifed, that was clearly the intention of the threat.
It is rather pathetic that you can't influence anyone with valid ideas and have to resort to shrill threats, but I guess this is just oen more bulletpoint showing that radicals on the far left are completely devoid of anything at all constructive. I won't agree with Willem that the right started this behavior. I will, however, agree that the right has signed on to this.
However, going back to the 90's, opposing political sides have had members who will sink to the lowest level to defeat an opponent.
Did I mention that was the 1790s? Aaron Burr didn't go the prison for killing Alexander Hamilton because they disagreed on management of the Bank of the United States. Burr published dreck in a Washington rag that accused Hamilton of having an affair with a married woman. Hamilton challenged Burr to a duel and, well, the rest is history.
To a degree, this type of mudslinging has been with us since the beginning of the Republic. That said, the left, commencing in 1981 with the election of Ronald Reagan and reaching its peak in the 1987 treatment of Robert Bork and the 1991 treatment of Clarence Thomas, made this kind of thing a part of their standard playbook.
Both sides are reaping a whirlwind of hate. Both sides have put hate above policy, hate above principle and hate above debate. Hate drives extremists on both side. While we hate one another, we open our nation to the hate of others to everyone's detriment. keith | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 11:25 am Direct link to this comment

why have we lost sight of why politicians - representatives - exist? they are supposed to represent us, the citizens, in government. they're supposed to express the views of their constituents, and vote in the interest of their constituents on matters before congress or the senate. that's the minimum of their responsibilities, and if they fail to do that, then they should be gone.
so the matter of "blackmail vs accountability" depends largely on who this person is, or represents.
if he's voting based on his personal views or for political expediency, then expose him. if he's accurately representing his constituents, it's blackmail.

The bad behavior listed as coming from Republicans by some of you lacks the extra legal status that would make it near equivalent. In other words, blackmail is an actual felony.
You all defending this action as I described are part of the reason why the people keep giving the left the finger come election time. This blog is interesting in several different veins. First, it is a gay person trying to erase the stigma of being gay while simultaneously capitalizing on the stigma of being gay. Secondly, it is an attempt to directly coerce a politician's vote- a federal crime. Finally, it is presented without any evidence whatsoever and bigots accept it as gospel.

David,
To set the record straight, you called me tortured, not the other way around.
I am not, as you suggest, "...one of those Opus Dei guys." I've never even met one of them, to my knowledge.
I never declared that I was forgiven. It's not for me to decide if I am forgiven or not.
I wasn't being condescending, I was being honest, something that we don't get much these days. I honestly think its sad when people are convinced that, in their own mind, they know more than institutions that have been in existence for a very, very long time.
I do find it ironic that someone who is quick to attack the Catholic Church as a "...controlling religous entity..." Immediately embraces the Government and the Supremem Court as an entity of great virtue when they impose law without the voice of the governed.
I remind you that the US is established on the consent of the governed. Judicial fiat, be it Roe v. Wade or the MA State declaring "gay marriage" constitutional when 70% of the "governed" are in opposition is nothing more than a "controlling political entity." keith | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 12:13 pm Direct link to this comment

That's rich. Accusing liberals of being homophobes. All it takes to get a Republican to suddenly claim to give a rat's ass about gay rights is when one of his own is about to get outed. Not that he actually cares about gay rights, but it could have political consequences. That's what matters. Don't insult our intelligence with your feigned concern about ethics. It's really very simple if you think about it. Whether conservative or liberal, special interest groups go out of their way to support/oppose legislators. Keep on talking like you do, Mr. Pat Robertson. You're making the case that nothing is out of bounds when opposing an opponent.
If the self-hating closet queens in Congress and state legislatures want to continue hiding their identities, all the while voting to restrict, if not take away completely, the rights of another American, then it's time to hand them over to the American Inquisition. Name their names. Simple. The "god-fearing" people will be more than happy and eager to pick up the torch and burn them at the stake for us.

Unfortunately, David, you are grossly uninformed, so debating you would be an exercise in futility.
Rather than do any real research, you have accepted as (if you will pardon the pun) gospel all of the negative things you've been told about the Catholic Church throughout history.
You won't, I suspect, admit that the Church was the sole guardian of western knowledge through the Dark Ages. You won't, I suspect, acknowledge that the Catholic Church never subscribed to any flat-Earth theories. You won't, I suspect, acknowledge that the Church had already convened an Eccumenical Council to address the very abuses that Martin Luther opposed. You won't admit any of this because it doesn't fit your view or religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular as being the root of all evil.
In fact, there have been abuses in the Church. I don't deny them. I wish they hadn't happened, but with every one, attempts have been made to correct them.
The most recent scandal is one you probably won't want to discuss. It has been limited almost exclusively to the United States. It has been much more limited than those enemies of the Church would have you believe. It has also been the result of a cult of homosexuality in the priesthood. Seminarians have been pressured to engage in homosexual acts. Men who have never intended to subscribe to dogma or doctrine have become priests and abused their positions. Of course, this must be the fault of the Church, no? Forceing priests to be celibate (there are SO man young women claiming that they were abused) must be the cause. Not allowing gay men to become priests (but wait, these are gay men who have become priests) must be the cause.
Of course there are gay priests, very good gay priests. There are, I have no doubt, many gay men who found that the priesthood has given them the fulfillment they need. They have been, and continue to be, important members of their community. This is not, however, because they are gay. It's because they are good priests. It is in SPITE of the fact that they are gay. keith | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 12:46 pm Direct link to this comment

There's the right-wing Republican Senator from a mountain state who settled a sexual harassment suit with

And there's the moderate Republican from the Midwest who's been in the Senate forever.
Not that there aren't some Democrats who might be suspect, too ...

Last comment and then I'll leave it alone, and only because some still seem not to 'get it'. While I would have found the outing of a closeted gay man against his wishes an objectionable act, at least that would have been preferable to the tactic being employed here.
On the one hand, there is the truth, if it is that, which is being exposed, however unfortunate. The exposer is acting as judge, which is unfortunate, but perhaps not overly so. On the other there is the promise of the continuation of a lie for a payment with the judgment still present. It's not exactly hard math. I don't mind hardball. I especially do not mind hardball against hypocrites. The MOST effective tool to use against hypocrites IS the actual substance of their hypocrisy. So, I support outing hypocrites who make noise against something only to be "guilty" of that same something through and through.
It is best to time the outing(s) at a time when it would be well nigh impossible for the party to find a credible replacement. The opponent must receive an insurmountable advantage due to both the facts of the outing AND the timing of the outing. I hope you achieve the right to marry as you wish. I hope that a person's sexual identity becomes no more of a public issue than their preferred copulative position. Keith, I do feel sorry for you. It's fine that you want to remain committed to the Catholic Church. It's unfortunate that you can't be true to yourself. It's doesn't have to be a black and white issue. You don't have to sleep around with every guy, and you don't have to be celibate. Why not try to find a meaningful relationship. Frankly, it is no different than the straight married Catholics who are comfortable with their sexuality, but still want to have sex without having 20 kids (i.e., use birth control), which is forbidden in the Church. Just a suggestion. But it's your choice, and you can go on making believe that everything is okay, and suppress the God given gift of your sexuality. And when you say something like a good gay priest is good in SPITE of being gay, it does sound a tad self-loathing.
As for outing, I have gone back and forth on this issue. With regards to the hypocritical closet cases who continually vote anti-gay and/or spew anti-gay speech, I don't see why one should be worried about their privacy. The fact is they have little or no regard for the millions of people that they attempt to take away rights from. The problem is where to draw the line. I don't know if Mike's criteria is the correct one. In fact, I don't think anyone could come up with a good line. And even if you did, I don't think that outing is effective. In other words, if we find out that a pathetic closet case is gay, I don't see how that helps us. Who would want to be associated with such a person.
Regarding blackmail, I assume Mike has consulted a lawyer to determine whether or not his actions are illegal.
Regarding politicians or celebrities who want to stay in the closet. Keep in mind that exposing hypocrisy is here to stay. Now sexual orientation has entered the fray. So whether outing is right or wrong, I would suggest to those want to remain in the closet to stay celibate, if their position of power or fame is that important to them, especially those who feel the need to be anti-gay. George Deeming:
You believe that any election that a Republican wins is stolen (the only truly verifiably stolen presidential election in history was the 1960 election of JFK. Illinois was fixed.)
GWB, like it or not, received MORE votes that Bill Clinton in both 2000 and 2004. In fact, Bill Clinton NEVER received a majority.
That, however, is not germaine. The Presidential Election rules are VERY clearly spelled out. Prior to the election (you Gore supporters may not remember this) GORE was actually pointing out the Electoral College rule. His internal polling showed that he was going to take the college but might lose the popular vote.
The situation in Bush/Gore wasn't even unique. Both in 1824 (Adams won only 30% of the popular vote) and in 1888 (PResident Cleveland out polled Benjamin Harrision 48.6 to 47. . The only thing that was unique was that the Democrats tried to change the rules after the fact. Gore and Co tried to changed the established rules for "determining intent" in a select number of Democrat stronghold counties. The Supreme Court (7-2) struck down the recount strategy and (5-4) ended the recounts.
There is no basis to the claims that anything happened in Ohio (Bush carried the state by 118,601 votes). This is just a conspiracy theory because people don't like losing close elections. It's based on a claim that Kerry's exit polling showed he was going to win. Exit polling in infamously inaccurate.
If you want to win elections, you need to get out of places like this and listen to the American people. 70% of Americans oppose gay marriage, however, very few advocate any kind of violence against gay people. The Democrats remain wedded to this as an issue when most Americans are against them.
67% of Americans SUPPORT limitations to abortion. Yet, the Democrats insist on making abortion a litmus test for the Supreme Court.
A recent poll showed that 2-1 Americans are opposed to judges imposing law, rather than elected officials enacting law. Yet the Democrats, realizing that their legislative agenda is far out of the mainstream, insist on creating a "Judocracy" to eliminate dissent from the party line.
This is why the Dems are losing elections. Moveon.org, the DailyKos and Howard Dean are the reason you are being marginalized. keith | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 2:23 pm Direct link to this comment

Thanks, that's a nice sentiment, but I don't agree with you. You can't be a little pregnant, and you can't be Catholic without accepting the doctrine and dogma. John Kerry isn't a Catholic. He's a guy who says he's a Catholic.
I don't have a problem with people wanting to use birth control or live by any other set of rules they want. I have a problem with people claiming that they're Catholic.
You can't be Catholic and pro-choice. The two are mutually exclusive. Same for being a practicing homosexual or divorced or using abortifactant or barrier birth control. It's against the rules. But this threat seems completely fake. If it is true that you outed other congressmen in the past, then you are smart enough to understand the law and would already know that threatening Senators to get them to vote a certain way is a crime.
So... the only rational explanation is that the letter you displayed was never actually intended for any individual Senator and instead is used to excite your fans, anger the right, get more traffic to your site, etc. I'm not saying there isn't an element to your cause to scare all the closet Congressman out there, but I doubt you're threatening a specific individual. Ya know, all these social-reactionaries who want to drive everyone back into the closet sure didn't have any issues screaming for news about the blue dress...of course, they just hate it when you turn their own dogs back on them...
Do it...do it often...
Despite all the faux outrage by righty trolls, the ethics are pretty simple: yes, it is wrong to randomly violiate private citizens' privacy - and that includes sexual activity*. It's quite different when you're dealing with people who are actively trying to target and harm you for certain private behaviors and activities they themselves engage in. It's called self-defense. This is using the exact framework we are supposedly fighting against. Why is outing so successful? Because it engages a very negative prevailing belief in America about homosexuals being untrustworthy, not truthful, and shamed at the core. To use that is to buy into it.
I find it ironic that for weeks we have heard via discussions about Brokeback Mountain that Hollywood needs to represent gays in a more positive light. How is engaging the worst example of homophobia, that being perpetuating an untrue and negative sterotype by highlighting singular example, at all something to be be proud of? Everyone seems too worried about the fate of these closet queens who need to be exposed. Honey, the Republican party is "the big tent." Dubya is "a uniter, not a divider." The self-loathing queers in government know who they are, and I'm sure their "illicit sexual proclivities" won't be a problem at all when they're exposed. There will be plenty of thoughtful soul-searching by their constituents who will remember the point in the movie "Brokeback Mountain" and they'll forgive their representatives and vote them back in office again and again. I'm not sure why some people don't want these hypocrites exposed. No really. The truth shall set them free, Dorothy!
And if none of that happens and these exposed queens are just abandoned, voted out and forgotten,... oh well,... ce la vie, toots! Philip | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 5:18 pm Direct link to this comment

I for one applaude this brave man's commitment to empty the government of the filthy fags. We need to do everything we can to get these fags out of politics. NOW!
Did you know the fag agenda includes desensitizing the unsuspecting public: "The first order of business is desensitization of the American public concerning gays and gay rights.....To desensitize the public is to help it view homosexuality with indifference instead of with keen emotion. Ideally, we would have straights register differences in sexual preferences the way they register different tastes for ice cream or sports games....At least in the beginning, we are seeking public desensitization and nothing more. We do not need and cannot expect a full 'appreciation' or 'understanding' of homosexuality from the average American. You can forget about trying to persuade the masses that homosexuality is a good thing. But if only you can get them to think that it is just another thing...then your battle for legal and social rights is virtually won".
That's what we're fighting against, dammit.
Not only that, another part of the fag agenda is to get the public to affirm their filthy lifestyle, as one fag admitted in the October 1987 fag rally on Washington: "We are no longer seeking just a right to privacy and a protection from wrong. We also have a right -- as heterosexual Americans already have -- to see government and society affirm our lives".
But the most devious part of the fag agenda is to turn people from Christianity: "The teaching that only male-female sexual activity within the bounds and constraints of marriage is the only acceptable form should be reason enough for any homosexual to denounce the Christian religion".
NO MORE FAGS IN GOVERNMENT, DAMMIT!

I am a gay man, who's a democratic liberal. However, I find this kind of thing appalling. Blackmail is not right.
The Democratic party needs to figure something out, and that's a clear solid view or agenda to make our country a better place instead of the "Well they don't do a good job, so vote for us" mentality they have. If you don't support Alito come up with a good reason not to support him. If he routinely runs over puppies and leaves fiery bags of poop on people's doorsteps, that's a reason not to support him. What in his judicial philosophy makes you not support him? These are the things people need to know, not that some Senator is gay. Who cares. There are plenty of neocons who are banging and getting banged at the Crew Club I'm sure of it, but...? Who cares? It just like most everyone else's personal life is just that, personal.
The best way to fight back against the republicans is to show people in a clear consice manner what they're doing wrong and then have a viable solution to the problem. How many of you people commenting on this blog actually believe this story? Don't you all think it's a bit too fantastic to be true? Like I said before, even George Michael would have found a more private place than a Union Station bathroom. Come on.
And if you were going to risk breaking the law by threatening a Senator to vote a particular way, it wouldn't make much sense to do it the day before, since by then the Senator would have already made his decision, already confided with other Senators about his impending vote, already started working with his aides to prepare various statements, etc.
IMO, this is a bogus story used as a publicity stunt. DT | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 6:23 pm Direct link to this comment

Mike, game theory suggests that the best long-term strategy is tit-for-tat. That is, when agent A is sold out by agent B, agent B's best strategy is to do the same to A in the next iteration. That way, A (and others) learn quickly that B cannot hurt A without immediate retaliation. (Republicans and Israelis live by this rule)
Don't worry about sinking this guy's election, it's too far off. Out him now so other closeted gays will know what awaits them if they sell us out. Plus, like other outed politicians, he'll likely moderate his votes once out. neil | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 6:47 pm Direct link to this comment

Okay, I tried to finish reading all the comments here, but I just don't have time. Personal political and sexual alliances aside - all this argument seems rather silly to me.
Call me crazy, but Michael's post/threat/whatever you're calling it makes perfect sense. It's not blackmail, more like... revenge. Reasonable, amusing revenge, in a "You fuck with my shit, you pay for my shit" sort of way. If the senator -whoever the fuck he is - is going to denounce things that he himself personally does in order to gain political power, getting found out is only what's coming to him anyway, no matter who does it.
And besides - it'll be funny, like tripping the popular kid at school and making them land in their cafeteria spaghetti, if you'll excuse the juvenile analogy.
It's not threats, blackmail, or homophobic hipocracy, it's... just desserts. Nikki | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 7:04 pm Direct link to this comment

Okay, I get it. Sorta like, oh I dunno, exposing a person's, um, "presidential indiscretions" with a chunky intern.
I mean, it's no big deal, right? Since the public has every right to know a person's private activities.

Can someone answer or speak to the point that I, and others have raised? That by outing someone, we are in fact engaging the negativity a significant amount of Americans feel about homosexuality. And we are using that dynamic, which we say we detest, for our own gain, to bring down the public perception of an official.
This is not an argument for the privacy of the cowardly senator ~ I could care less about his outcome in all this. It's what our message is saying if we rely on the homophobia inherent in America to our own gain, while at the same time that we speak out against it.

Steve, even the Spanish Inquisition fell apart when people came to their senses and realized what was being done "for them" in their church's name. What Michael is doing here is nothing at all like that but is more exposing the general public to the intense homophobia of the ignunt sheeple who are waiting impatiently for Jayzus Praise da Lard to save them from all this. The closet queens in Congress fear nothing more than their "Christian fanatic" base finding out their dirty little secret. They know deep down that some of their supporters would tear them up like rabid dogs if they knew. I can't say I'd be unhappy to see that happen.
If all the gay, lesbian, bi and transgendered citizens of the world stood up one day and proclaimed "Here we are. We're mad as hell and we're not gonna take this anymore!" I have no doubt these same good "Christian" people would be scrambling to drink the Jim Jones kool-aid just because they were too ignorant to realize all the positive things we as homosexuals have contributed to the world. Their world would be shattered! They think we're much more of a minority than we really are. None of them can quote me a passage of Jesus' own words denigrating homosexuality.

Thanks for your response. I agree in so far as people coming out in their own lives is going to ultimayely do the most good in changing minds that are open to be changed. I think people need to do that much more than they curently are if we hope to make inroads in the areas that are being denied us.

Steve, I understand your point as well. I just don't see the current crop of closet homosexual politicians standing up to their constituents and being honest with them. Karma is a bitch they say, and some of these people will surely agonize one day over decisions they made earlier in their lives and the compromises they made. Amazing.. Am I the only person reading this stuff that thinks it is total BS? You all actually believe a Senator was performing oral sex in a bathroom at Union Station???? I realize our leaders are often morons, but that's just insane.
You all seem to be ignoring
a) the sheer absurdity of the story
b) the fact that blackmail is a crime
c) the fact that this blogger has a lot to gain by making something like this up (look at the traffic)
d) the fact that outing somebody in such a way would do more harm to gays that help.

Armyguy: Heh, thanks.
Trentk269: Ignoring the use of “you guys” as a gross generalization, I think the reality falls more into “Hate hypocrites, even those who blow guys.”
Grim5: Well, I think this could be sort of compared to the Clinton ‘scandal’. Who gives a damn if he slept with someone. Once you lie about it, people are going to desperately want to shove it in your face. Hrm.
Steve/OKJ: As far as promoting homophobia goes, and other comments that have been made along those lines… I think it’s an ironic comment. If this senator was himself publicly “demonizing” homosexuals, then it’s fair play to subject him to a prejudice that he himself was so anxious to endorse.
Philip: Whoo. –polite applause-
DT: …I’m probably half your age, and I have more than enough faith in the fact that Senators are capable of blowing people in bathrooms. Truth tends to be stranger than fiction, I find. Apparently some of these people don't know Mike. Did they forget about this?
Updated: 12:17 p.m. ET Aug. 31, 2004
RICHMOND, Va. - Republicans were scrambling to find a replacement candidate after U.S. Rep. Edward L. Schrock announced his retirement amid claims that he is gay.
Republicans from Schrock’s conservative district, which includes Norfolk and Virginia Beach, planned to choose a nominee to oppose Democratic lawyer David B. Ashe after a hastily arranged meeting Tuesday night.
The party has just three days left to get names on the Nov. 2 ballot, state GOP spokesman Shawn M. Smith said. Two state senators and two delegates were among those mentioned.

Ahem, what was Ed doin' again?
Hey, wasn't he also Fallwell and Robertson's buddy/congressman?

Check out the rapacious rabid right knuckle draggin' droolers as they weigh in one by one with their ever shrieking harpiesque shrill vapidity - friggin' hilarious! Did they forget the male escort service that operated out of the WH during the Reagan - Bush years?
Why do I have a feeling this soon to be outed senator has voted against gays, ala Rep. David Dreier?
BTW, did Dreier ever wince when he was campaigning for Ahnold when Ahnold was using the girlie man references?
Where is the blackmail?
John doesn't bullshit.
I've never heard a right wingnut weigh in on Mehlman being gay, he IS the head of the RNC.
Of course most of 'em don't cop to Nixon's Southern Strategy and think Goldwater is some kinda civil rights hero. Stupid f@cks..
Good work, John. Keep an eye on these bastardi. Methinks the reform crowd is out tonight.

Nancy:
To answer your question, I don't join a gay Church because I don't subscribe to the belief that being gay is completely natural and acceptable. I believe that some times we just aren't wired right.
That said, I need to point out that God doesn't make people psychotic either. God doesn't give people cancer. God does no evil, but he allows Satan to work evil in this world.
Therefore, I am saying that I think homosexuality is in violation of the natural law, in spite of the 2-3 percent of the population who are forced to deal with it.
Home people with severe mental illness (Schitzophrenia comes to mind) also have a tendency to act in a manner that is incongruous with a complete relationship with God. (These people can become violent and homocidal). In our society, we accept that these are mitigating circumstances, perhaps God does as well. I don't know his mind, only what he has told us through his sacred word.
Homosexual activity is disordered and, I can attest to this from experience, lessens a persons own opinion of him or her self. I mean, look at you guys, you're ultimate insult to a straight person is "Hey, you must be gay!" Is that the sign of someone who is completely confident in the rightness of their own lifestyle?
I believe it is important to be true to God, not to yourself. God has made it clear that we are to obey his commandments. These are simply summarized in two statements.
1) Love me. (God, not your author)
2) Love each other as I love you.
Loving each other does not mean condoning wrong behavior. As a loving parent stops a child from doing that which is dangerous, sometimes loving someone means pointing out where we think he is leading himself to a fall from God's grace.
It's funny, I'll be attacked for saying that, but I'll bet everyone ready to attack me for that is in favor of "Interventions" to stop someone from drinking, smoking or doing drugs. keith | Email | Homepage | 01.31.06 - 10:45 pm Direct link to this comment

Effects of outing an anti-gay Senator could be: the Right realizes that gays are anywhere, including in their own midst...and the Left loses one of its significant opponents.
Seeking to stop homophobic actions directed at us is a noble fight.
Didn't the Right just wage a 3 year battle against President Clinton for an action? The damage that they did to Clinton weakened his Democrat successor enough to allow Bush to squeak into office. You are awesome. I've been in the same boat as you for a while. I've struggled mightily with SSA for a long time. I'm fortunate to be strongly attracted to women, so don't envision a life of loneliness, but I can attest that this struggle is difficult.
The only reason I'm posting this message is because I doubt that most persons who are struggling with SSA and would readily admit the disordered nature of homosexual acts would even post a response. Most will villify you for your message, but let it be known that you do influence others and are not alone.
I only ended up on this site after a blog I frequent posted a link about the supposedly gay Senator. I would not otherwise frequent such a website that might lead me to the occasion of sin.

Mike,
After reading all the vile and hate-filled rantings by the GOP'ers (Greasy Old Poofters), One word sums up my feelings...
BRAVO!
It's time we start using the Gay Old Party's playbook and hit them with it.
I say it's high time we out every single one of the bastards, and force them to explain themselves.
I know here in Michigan there are several State elected officals that have a liking for the same sex.
When we get done on the national level, lets go after those on the state and local levels.
Don't stop there, go after CEO's, recording artists, and everyone else who is nothing more than a lowlife, self-hating bigot.
My personal opinion is, if you don't want to come out, then stop sucking dick!

A senator's responsibilities should lie with the people who elected him, not whatever social group s/he belongs to. Senators are supposed to represent the interests of their constituents. If his constituents don't support gay marriage, he shouldn't be expected to vote in favor of gay marriage. To threaten to out someone because some senator who doesn't represent you doesn't support your beliefs is not only illegal, but incredibly stupid, and goes against everything the democratic party claims to stand for. Funny that you mention the "life of loneliness" cliché. That is a myth that homophobes are always trying to perpetuate but has no basis in reality. Gays can and do enter into commited relationships. They often have children. They also have family...parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, etc. They have friendships, gay and straight, that last a lifetime, just like any other human being. This myth might have been true 50 years ago, when gays were universally shunned, but it is not true today and never again will be. Yes, Lane does need a clue. A man can support his opposition to marrying a man by NOT marrying one. What's STUPID is to limit someone's else options because you can't envision it in your life. Why are you assuming that I'm not a democrat?
I do support gay marriages, but if we're talking about a red state here, and the vast majority supports the federal marriage amendment, then it is not the senator's perogative to disregard the desires of his constituents. He is supposed to represent them, not his own personal interests. The constitutionality of such a federal amendment can be easily challenged later. The comments are more interesting than the post. The gay-activist looney tunes want to hurt the man because he is different from them in his politics. The homophobe wingnuts want to hurt him because he is different from them in his lifestyle. Classic monkey reflex. "See the stanger; fear the stranger; hate the stranger; kill the stranger". I'm a hetero "evil rethug" who just happens to have a gay stepbrother.
To all those idiots who think homosexuality is a choice, I fart in your general direction. I watched my stepbrother struggle with his sexual orientation.
To all those homosexuals who are "in your face" gay, I fart in your general direction. I'm tired of public behaviour on your part which would either get me arrested or would lead to condemnation by my peers if I acted that way in public.
I don't support gay marriage because I believe marriage is an institution between a man and a woman.
Gay's already have every recourse available to hetero's except for one and that one is being able to file for SS under a partners benefits.
The right to inherit - that's what wills and POA's are for.
The right to have medical say in treatment of a partner - Medical Power of Attorney as well as differing medical forms wherein a partner can name their partner as one who can make decisions and/or be given information.
Home ownership - Mortgage companies have already been financing non-married couples together on property for years.
Health insurance coverage - Most major companies already offer domestic partner benefits.
I could list more such as adoption, foster parenting, etc. butI don't want to write a book.
The majority of republicans I personally know have no problem with gay people, we just are tired of the agenda. No, I don't want my kids taught about homosexuality while they're in grade or middle school but then I don't want my kids taught about heterosexuality at that age either. That's my job as a parent. Health classes like I took when I was in high school are sufficient. Heterosexuality and homosexuality can be discussed in those types of classes.
Y'all keep on with outing people and it will keep on appearing as if there's something shameful or bad about a person being gay. People are only outted for behaviour that's wrong and scandalous.
During the 2004 debates there was condemnation on both sides when Mary Cheney's orientation was brought up. Republicans already knew she was gay...so what. Outing her though made it seem as if there was something bad about her being gay.

Ooh how cute Philip. Nothing like a little stereotypical bitchiness.
Agenda is the appropriate word when used in the context I used it in. There is an organized faction of the homosexual community which promotes the inclusion of homosexuality being taught in sex education.
a·gen·da ( P ) Pronunciation Key (-jnd)
n. pl. a·gen·das
A list or program of things to be done or considered: “They share with them an agenda beyond the immediate goal of democratization of the electoral process” (Daniel Sneider).
A plural of agendum.
Would you prefer I use the terminology of a program?

TaurusRising,
I am no troll. If you'd like a detailed description of my struggle, I'd be more than willing to share. My praise for Keith is genuine.
I am not a self-loathing homosexual, bisexual, or whatever other label you'd have for me. I'm a devout Catholic who struggles mightily reconciling his faith with feelings and attractions that simply won't go away. At the same time, I recognize these feelings for what they are - disordered. I had an impish, emotionally distant father growing up and to this day I have a rocky relationship with him. I see my marginal attraction to men as an outgrowth of my longing for affection and affirmation by a male authority figure - affection and affirmation I never received from my father.
I thank God everyday that I am equally attracted to women. I fully expect to marry and have a family. I also firmly intend to share my struggle with my wife. Transparency is the key to an honest life. I cannot completely give myself to another withough disclosing my struggles and shortcomings.
I understand the confusion, isolation, anger, sadness, anxiety and frustration that all individuals with same sex attraction experience. It complicates life on a level others simply cannot fully comprehend. At the same time, I'm unwilling to submit to a lifestyle I know in my heart to be wrong. I cannot change my sexuality, but I can refuse to let it control me. I have and always will have full control over my actions. That is why I shun illicit sex (either with men or women), choose celibacy until marriage, and will live a chaste , procreative, and life-affirming marriage when the day comes.
Call me a troll if it pleases you, but I am not. This is real. This is me. This is the truth. If it upsets you, that's your problem, not mine. Struggling | Email | Homepage | 02.01.06 - 4:29 pm Direct link to this comment

Jeff,
Where do you get the idea I have a problem with gays? And where in the hell do you get the idea I am in the slight bit religious? Or are you under the mistaken impression anyone who's republican automatically has a problem with gays or is a fundie?
Your stereotyping of republicans and/or me is the same as if I were to state all gays were into leather, multiple sex partners, bears and were fembots, etc. Jeez, get a grip!
And yes, I am well aware there are idiots out there who have an agenda promoting ideas such as homosexuality is a choice, it's evil, it's an abomination, it's sinful, blah, blah, blah.
I'm here because I followed a link and I had something I wanted to say. I'm not here because I have a problem with gays. Far from it.
Do you need remedial reading comprehension classes? Were you homeschooled in the bayous of Louisiana? Here's a quote from my first post.

I'm really not sure why some people get all bent out of shape over trolls. Sure they try to disrupt conversations but occasionally one might bring up a point-of-view I never thought of before. I can't really say any of them have changed my mind about any particular issue but they have a right to post anywhere they want and say anything, up to the limits of the moderator's patience, that is. Personally, I hope Michael doesn't edit or delete any of these comments. They're a showcase of ignorance. Philip | Email | Homepage | 02.01.06 - 4:42 pm Direct link to this comment

I will reiterate: I am no troll.
Still think I'm a fully hetero male in disguiese? Want details about my male attraction? Fine.
When I give into temptation, I enjoy looking at websites devoted to naked male celebrities. I can rattle off countless movies that contain male nudity. I can tell you which actor was naked in which movie. For example, Kevin Bacon has a full frontal in Wild Things. Or, David Duchovny has a full frontal in New Year's Day. Or how about Kevin Spacey, who doffs his kit in American Beauty. Trust me, I could go on all day.
I am not proud of this. This is my vice. I am struggling mightily to control it, but little by little I am succeeding. Like I said, I only wandered onto this sight after a link on a blog that I frequent.
And again, thank you Keith, for your honesty and insight. Struggling | Email | Homepage | 02.01.06 - 4:55 pm Direct link to this comment

sally,
I don't know how to break this to you but you party has been taken over by religious nuts. wake up and smell the coffee. your statement that you don't support gay marriage because I believe marriage is an institution between a man and a woman is, well retarded. this perspective is a derivative of religious thought. if now a because of a religious belief then what possible oposition to ssm could you have? because you are against breaking up "institutions".

anon,
My party hasn't been taken over by religious nuts. Granted they squeal pretty darned loud but the majority of us aren't comprised of zealots and fundies.
Most of us want limited government intrustion into our lives, want wasteful government programs cut, want a strong military, illegal immigration stopped, want the police to serve and protect and for them not to be tax revenoor's (yes, I know I misspelled it, it was intentional), etc. We don't want a theocracy, we want to keep our republic.
By the way, this skank has never had a problem in getting a good man.
As an aside, it's no wonder so many have a problem with acceptance of gays. Being called a skank, a fag hag, a member of the religious right, inferring I'm uneducated (where did you go to school? Alabama), assuming I'm over 65, a breeder, a troll...all of those are sooo conducive to constructive conversations./rant Sally | Email | Homepage | 02.01.06 - 5:45 pm Direct link to this comment

The truth is that it is indead a wonder why so many have a problem with gays in America. My relatives in Switzerland have no problem with gays and they are very active in thier church.

Health classes like I took when I was in high school are sufficient. Heterosexuality and homosexuality can be discussed in those types of classes."
Kids learn about heterosexuality when they are todlers. They see their parents, they see their neighbors, they see their aunts and uncles. They usually don't see gay and lesbian couples. When they do, it's usually ‘just a roommate’.
My nieces and nephews learned about loving gay couples through me when they were todlers. They are reaching maturity now and they don't have any hangups with learning about it. They're dating, they're starting to form their own families now. All of them are straight.
Why not teach children in kindergarten about homosexuals and heterosexuals committing themselves in loving relationships? Willem van Oranje | Email | Homepage | 02.01.06 - 6:41 pm Direct link to this comment

honestly Keith, stay single and celebate. Don't put a woman through this. My experiance in the gay community is that very few gays are 50/50 in attraction. You are actually bi-sexual, which is rare and usually phoney. I will get a lot of slack from fellow gays for saying this but there have been studies that allude to the truth in this. Most gays are no more attracted to the opposite sex then straights are attracted to the same sex. trust me on this.

I don't read Ann Coulter as I regard her as being way too shrill and over the top. I don't listen to Rush Limpballs because he's bombastic, boring and too full of himself.
I am fully aware of what's going on in the political scene. Do you know which Dems' voted for and which Repubs' voted against Alito's confirmation? What do you know about the Ballinger report? What about the DSM? What country was Sheehan in recently and what was she saying during a public appearance there? Did you know all charges against her are being dropped and the Capitol Police have admitted they made a mistake arresting her? Speaking of Sheehan, whose Senate seat has she said she might run for and why did she say it? What is your opinion on the presidents proposed guest worker program? Do you know which country had contracts with Hussein to develop Iraqs oil reserves once the embargo was lifted? Who in the Clinton administration thought it was acceptable for 500,000 to die because of the embargo? Who is Fatah? Who is Hamas? Do you believe in MIHOP or LIHOP or neither? Why was Cronkite forced to retire early? Who is Mary Mapes? What Iman is Ahmadinejad preparing for? What did Chirac recently say about nuclear weapons?
You're soooo right! I have a problem with promiscuity, I'm a moron and an idiot, am judgemental and I have a problem with gays. Wait til I tell my stepbrother! He'll be amazed you've managed to peg me so well. Why I bet he won't ever talk to me again much less love me.

Richard Lugar (R-Indiana).
And of course, the execrable Larry Craig (R-Idaho), who bought peace in a sexual harassment suit brought by a male staffer about ten years ago.
I don't care anymore that Lugar hasn't been the most enthusiastic member of the Great Right Wing Hate Machine. He votes with them.
The only good Republican is a dead Republican.
A person who had spent time working in Lugar's house and spoke at length with Lugar's wife told me all about their separate bedrooms and his male nude art collection 30 years ago.
And gay friends in Indianapolis confirmed recently it's widely known in Hoosierland that Lugar is gay.

Pro Choice Repubs:
Condi Rice
Gulliani
Senator's:
Lincoln Chaffee
Susan Collins
Lisa Murkowski
Gordon Smith
Olympia Snowe
Arlen Specter
Ted Stevens
John Warner
Kay Bailey Hutchison
These are just a few I could think of off the top of my head. Some have varying degrees of when abortion is ok.
I'm not familiar with pro-choice Congressmen(R) or Governor's(R).
I'm not going to disagree that one of the platforms the RNC advocates is pro-life. If anyone thinks though every republican is pro-life then they're wrong. I'm pro-choice when pregnancy is a result of rape or incest and when it endangers the mothers life. My viewpoint isn't all that uncommon among many of the rank and file repubs.
True conservative republicans are for smaller government. Yes, I am well aware Bush has grown the government and it's one of the things I disagree with him about. I'm not alone there either.
Here's another surprise for you...many repubs are against the WOsD. Many of us who came of age in the late 60's and early 70's think it's a travesty to make pot smoker's into criminals. I haven't smoked pot in 30 years but I have no problem with those that do. I also think those who are using the hard drugs and/or alcohol should be offered treatment with a first offense and then if they continue to use, they should serve time in a prison which is geared towards getting addicts clean and sober. Many of my fellow repubs think the same way because it's cheaper to address the addiction than it is to warehouse non-violent users.
So death to me and my fellow rethugs who hold the same ideas I do. Sally | Email | Homepage | 02.01.06 - 9:26 pm Direct link to this comment

Sally,
No one with a maturity level above that of a 15 year old is saying "death to republicans", but right now alot of gay people are extremely angry at your party because there is a widespread perception that all republicans at least tacitly approve of anti-gay political tactics. Speaking as a gay Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran I want to explode everytime I hear a republican say that they support the troops. They need to be more specific and say they support the troops who aren't fags. As far as Dennis Hastert and George Bush are concerned I suppose I deserve to have my career destroyed and life ruined if anyone finds out about my private life. I'm sure that your response will be that Clinton imposed the hideous "don't ask, don't tell" policy, but republicans are keeping it alive. Well over a hundred democrats and two republicans co-sponsored legislation to end DADT, but Hastert won't let it come up for a vote. Do I hate republicans sometimes? Yes, but when supposedely moderate republicans like Olympia Snow and Suzanne Collins support creeps like Hastert and DeLay its hard to separate out the good republicans from the bad ones. armyguy | Email | Homepage | 02.01.06 - 9:54 pm Direct link to this comment

If you choose to play any part in a conspiracy, any role whatever, you're as bad as the worst of the conspirators.
This is a fundamental principle of criminal and moral responsibility.
Mental reservations and any alleged residual decency count for nothing, NADA.
So ALL Republicans are fair game.
Because every last one of them is part and parcel -- and a political beneficiary -- of The Great Right Wing Hate Machine.
They get the racist vote, the hater vote, the religious bigot vote.
Every Republican is accountable for the bastards they represent, the bastards that elect them.
They are fair game, every one of them.
After all, that is how they play the game. THEY set these rules.
Having made the rules, if they were not legitimate, fair game, they would have the wisdom and decency to withdraw from the Party of Hate.
Lugar.
Craig.
This is merely a matter of giving the Rethugs a dose of their own medicine.
It's not as though anyone is actually doing anything to them, it's just fate manifesting itself.
Karma.

It's time to fight back, and give them dirty for dirty.

Her abortion stance is retarded. A fetus conceived in rape is expendable but one by a juvenile girl is sacred and said girl and her abortionist must be declared enemies of the state and punished accordingly. No central intellectual consistency or moral focus here by any definition. Just a collection of random special interests. She is not alone. We won’t get her swing vote next election but we will get many like her. Just keep it up ... you hate-filled bastards keep marginalizing yourselves. There is a reason why you have no voice in the political forum, and that is because no one wants to hear your hate.
You launch ad hominem personal attacks rather than debate or discuss ideas. I am guessing it is because you have no ideas.

You are a small tiny minority quite frankly whose opinions are so laughable they don't even merit the time from serious, intelligent people to consider.

ArmyGuy,
I do want to thank you for your service. Please don't explode because I do support our troops; gay, straight, into bdsm or asexual or whatever. I just don't give a flip about people's sexual orientation as long as they can serve with honour and can do the job as it's supposed to be done.
About the only thing I'll say about Clinton is what he did was at least provide a start which was more than what was and had been.
I've never served in the Armed Forces. I know there are gays that have and I'm not naive enough to think that once Clinton ok'd the d.a.t.a. that all of a sudden gays appeared in the armed services. Gays have always served even when they had to lie and had to sweat being found out.
What I'd like alot of y'all to realize is I'm not unique. My thoughts, feelings and ideology are held by a lot of repubs. Are we the majority in the party? Hell, no but minds and hearts are slowly changing.
If y'all can make it through boot camp and all the training I see no reason why gays can't serve their country in the military if they want to. I'd qualify gay service the same way I would hetero service. If either group is going in to be horndogs towards their fellow troops then neither should be welcome to serve. (And remember there are females serving that the straight guys could hit on.)
Hell, who cares what your sexual orientation is as long as you can get the job done. Whose business is it what your sexual orientation is? It's nobodys!
I'd like to draw an analogy and I hope it doesn't offend anyone.
Once upon a time women were regarded as chattel. We were considered inferior. Over time that has changed. I've seen major changes in my own lifetime.
I came from an upper middle class background. My Dad was the breadwinner and my Mom stayed at home to take care of the house, raise us two kids and be the wife. She waited on my Dad hand and foot because after all, that's what wives were for. She cooked, cleaned, sewed everyone's clothing except for Dads. Dinner was on the table promptly at 6:00. Breakfast was on the table with the same promptness. She'd bring my Dad a cup of coffee or a bowl of ice cream whenever he wanted it. If she needed a pair of shoes or wanted a new 'something, anything, whatever' she asked my Dad for permission to spend the money. (Remember, it wasn't about whether we could afford it because we could). Even though she was asked by neighbors on our street to come to coffee in the morning, she never did because Dad didn't think she needed to be wasting her time. In effect my Mom was still treated as chattel.
My Dad sent me to college strictly for the purpose of finding a husband. Being the dutiful daughter, I found one and married him. I didn't complete college because after all, I'd accomplished what I was supposed to.
In my first marriage I worked up until I was 5 months pregnant. One job I held was for a bank in the 'collection' department. My duties were to log in payments and contact customers who were 10 days past due.(Boring!) One day they allowed me to skip trace a lady who was several months delinquent. It turned out I was good at finding people because I brought a different perspective to it. Shortly thereafter one of the male collectors quit and I asked the boss if I could take over his desk. I was told no because that job wasn't open to females. At the time females could be minor clerks or hold other similar positions but we couldn't advance further.
The money I earned went into the household checking account. I was given an allowance of $15.00 a week for groceries. Just like Mom, I would ask if I could spend money on anything other than groceries. I had to ask permission to spend my own damned money. I also had to wait on him hand and foot. I left him when my son was 11 months old because I'd had enough and he wasn't going to ever have another opportunity to hit me again. I called my Dad after 'beloved' locked me out of my house. (Mom died when I was 18 so she wasn't around to give me any moral support) My Dad did his level best to make me go back because after all, I must have not been a good enough wife and besides, divorce wasn't something that was done by 'good' wives.
During all of this time, women were starting to make small gains in different arena's. Anyway, I divorced the jerk and vowed I'd never ask for permission to do anything ever again. (And I haven't!)
I went back to work at a much better job and it was one I wouldn't have been allowed to have even 5 years earlier.
As conditions for women got better I took advantage of them. Eventually I started a career in mortgage banking. Not a job but a career.
My whole point in relating all of that is things don't change overnight. Some who should have been my champions weren't. Minds and hearts had to change before women were given the same opportunities as men were.
I've experienced prejudice because of who I am and isn't that similar to your experience? I don't mean to make light or to demean your experiences. I speak up about prejudice and I do my best to change peoples minds. Someday it won't matter whether someone's male, female, gay, straight, black, white. Someday it will be about capability.
Giorgio,
You're wrong about support for the troops. Yeah, there's a shortage of armoured humvees but that's slowly being rectified. I know on the RW board I'm a member of we harassed everyone we could think of over and over (and still are) to get on the ball and properly armor our troops.
For awhile we were sending care packages but we changed what we were sending. Now we send specialized lights which can be mounted on the different vehicles and helps our troops to be able to see at night and during sandstorms. When we found out the standard issue knives were a piece of crap, we researched and found some good ones to send. Now we've got a backlog for the lights and especially for the knives. From the emails we receive it appears that anyone that sees one of the knives in action wants one. We do our best to get them to them.
Now, as far as Roe v Wade goes. While Roe v Wade itself may be rescinded it will be because it's found unconstitutional and should have been a states issue. BUT, I'm inclined to bet Roe v Wade won't ever be rescinded. I'm even willing to put my money where my mouth is. Sally | Email | Homepage | 02.02.06 - 12:49 am Direct link to this comment

I don't hate anyone. I simply disagree with you. And in many ways, I feel sorry for people who are as consumed with hatred as people like you are.
What happened to disagreeing with people without having to be disagreeable and hateful? It's why your side simply cannot win elections. No logical, sensible voter is going to vote for any candidate not offering a positive vision.
All the Left does in America is spew venom and hatred for the U.S. of A. I have offered many times to buy one-way tickets to a country of their choosing for many of the America-haters. No one takes me up, of course, because they know unlike other countries, they won't be put in prison for it. Just laughed at.
It's why an embittered minority from the kook fringe such as yourselves do not bother or concern me at all. You cannot make a difference in this country because the majority of Americans simply ignore you. That is why the louder you yell, the more divisive and shrill you become, the less you are heard. Keith,
Your definition of being a Catholic is quite antiquated. And you being homosexual makes it even more unfortunate that you keep the self-hating attitude that you have. And because a Catholic doesn't follow lock step every alleged Catholic rule, you actually believe that aren't really Catholic. If that's the case, then I'm afraid you are one of the very few Catholics around. It most feel even lonelier then. Sorry, but most straight Catholics I know use birth control, even the ones that are married. As for myself, I was born Catholic, but have left the Church, partly because of the anti-gay heirarchy. I may go back when they check their calendars and realize it's no longer the 1400s. In my job though, I do know several nuns, and almost all of them accept me, and have met and enjoyed the company of my boyfriend. And no, it's not the "love the sinner, hate the sin" crap. Too bad you cannot accept yourself. What a waste. Believe me it is, because I also went through the self-hating crap for several years. It's refreshing to see more and more people not go through that anymore.
Struggling,
What's there to struggle about then. You say you are attracted equally to women and men. If you are a "good Catholic," you won't have sex until you are married, and you would be able to marry a women you are attracted to. So what's the struggle? Something tells me that you really don't have the attraction to women that you say you have. Or even if you did, your attraction to men is much stronger, enough so that you cannot now nor will never be able to control that attraction despite what you say. Anyway, I do wish you good luck in your self-hating phase, and hope you are able to accept yourself soon.
Sally,
It does appear that you do support gay rights, but only so far. Your reasoning, however, for opposing gay marriage is lame. It's no better than the reasoning that those who were against interracial marriage. Their argument was marriage is between a man and a woman of the same race. Convincing argument, right? But I tell you what. I'm sure that when you find the right guy, instead of marrying him, you will instead, do all the things you say a gay couple can do to have almost the same rights of marriage. Thanks in advance.
Peter,
I think we can agree that there are haters on both sides of the aisle. And since the Republicans have their share of haters, how does it explain that they are in power now. In terms of President, Bush won with a smaller percentage of the popular vote in 2000. And as an incumbent, also barely beat his Democratic challenge in 2004. Hardly a mandate. And despite the Democrats being a bunch of haters, Bush's approval rating still hovers at 40%. Anyway, we'll see what happens in November and 2008.
As noted by others, Michael Rogers doesn't state that it is a senator up for reelection this year. I'm betting that it's one who's up for reelection in 2008. If I'm right, his wife was also at the SOTU, but they weren't sitting together. Also, as unusual as it may seem, it doesn't surprise me that a pathetic hypocrite would use a bathroom at Union Station for oral sex. Some people are that pathetic. For those who don't know, Union Station is Washington's main train station, serving AMTRAKk and Maryland and Virginia's rails. Above the station is a mall that is also called Union Station. There is also a Metro Stop at Union Station on the red line, but it is not a transfer station. Pat | Email | Homepage | 02.02.06 - 7:54 am Direct link to this comment

Hey Peter, vaffanculo, tu fascista di merda.
Have you been living in some right-wing echo chamber for the past six years? In case you hadn't noticed, most Americans don't support Bush and his merry band of corrupt oligarchs, theocratic fascists and war nuts. They oppose his social security plan, oppose the war in Iraq, his economic policies, his stance on Terry Schiavo and on stem cell research. And even on gay rights and abortion the general Anerican public is far more liberal than the Bush Admninistration. The problem is we don't have a real opposition party in this country to take advantage of all the widespread but still inchoate discontent.
And Sally, you gave yourself away with that bit about Roe v Wade being unconstitutional. That's pure rightwing boilerplate, i.e., "the founding fathers [sic] didn't put a right to privacy in the Constitution," blah blah blah. And it's body armor that hasn't been provided. That has been widely reported in case you hadn't heard. There was a recent story reporting that quite a few deaths could have been averted if soldiers had had body armor. But as we know, Bush and Rummy decided to wage their little war for oil on the cheap. Giorgio | Email | Homepage | 02.02.06 - 9:56 am Direct link to this comment

Then ask yourself this: does it make much sense that Michael would post an article on January 30, 2006 that would have an effect on someone running for re-election in 2008 or 2010? This article would be buried so deep in the archives that most people might not even remember it. Go ahead and give it a try though. Giorgio,
Nice job calling Peter a $hitty fascist.
People like you spread so many falsehoods and you do it without any documentation to back your position.
Here's a clue about support for Bush. Kerry lost, Bush won. Get over it! Your statement about most Americans not supporting Bush is erroneous otherwise Bush wouldn't have been re-elected and we'd have President Kerry instead.
Most polls have a minimum of 4 choices. If one doesn't take the middle two options into consideration it skews the poll. So as an example 40% can vote that Bush is doing an excellent job while 16% may say they disagree with some of his actions/policies. Thirteen per cent can vote against Bush by saying they support a few of his actions/policies while the remaining 31% actively oppose all of Bush's policies. Given that scenario I could legitimately say Bush's approval rating is only at 40%. Now, I used those numbers as an example only because I didn't look at the latest poll.
I'll agree most people didn't support Bush's specific plan he was promoting for SS revision. Now, tell me what the Dem's plan is? Or should we act like ostriches until SS does go broke and then enact panic legislation? Or maybe we should simply raise SS taxes in an amount sufficient to cover SS disbursements. I'm sure you won't mind funding my retirement (when I do retire) now will you?
War in Iraq = Purple fingers! Only in America could the LSM and anti-war people snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. Y'know, you're right, we should have just slapped another resolution on Iraq instead of enforcing any of the previous 14. After all, those resolutions were working so well, weren't they? Poor France, now that the Oil for Food program is no longer in effect, their banks aren't being used to bank and disburse the funds. Poor Germany. their contracts with Hussein to develop and renovate Iraq's oil and gas fields once the embargo was lifted are now null and void. Horror of horrors, did you hear Kofi Annan's son had to get a real job now that he couldn't be paid for his 'consulting' services? Poor guy! And then for your own Dad to apologise for your actions, what's the world coming to?
Now which poll are you using to back up your statement about most American's opposing Bush's economic plan? BTW, how was it worded?
Terri Schiavo - My guess is you don't talk to many of the members of organizations which deal with disabilities do you? Anyway, my own personal opinion is Frist went too far and Greer should have recused himself since he had ties to the hospice where Terri was being held. I also had a major ick with the lengths the Schindlers would go to in order to keep Terri alive if they were granted custody. I do find it rather odd Schiavo would testify in court during the malpractice suit he'd use any monies awarded to keep Terri alive and yet once he had the award in hand he issued DNR orders and petitioned the court for permission to pull her feeding tube.
Hey Giorgio you are aware fetal stem cell research is still going on in this country aren't you? There's no ban on private funding of fetal stem cell research. Federal funding was banned on future harvested fetal stem cells. Any existing fetal stem cells could be used in research funded by the feds. If the free market believes there's value in the curative powers of fetal stem cells, the private sector is free to invest in the research. Oh, you have heard other countries are finding through their research that adult stem cells have greater potential than fetal stem cells do. There's also no ban on federal funding of cord blood stem cell research. Keep spreading your misinformation though.
Let's see, the latest Zogby poll on abortion finds a sharp decline in the American public's support for abortion. Ten years ago 68% supported abortion, the latest Zogby poll finds 52% are in support. I wouldn't call 52% a large majority.
Gay rights...In every state in November, 2000 where the gay marriage initiative was on the ballot it was defeated and that included the states which Kerry carried.
I've read recent stories about deaths which could have been averted if their Humvee's had been properly armored. Do you have any links supporting your contention about body armor? Before I write any letters to my elected officials condemning and complaining about the lack of body armor I'd like to be able to cite where I got my information. I'm so sorry about needing factual information but I just don't think writing that some guy named Giorgio on an internet board said it carries quite the same impact as citing AP or Reuters, etc.
Sorry but my statement about Roe v Wade is correct. SCOTUS used the right to privacy of a woman's body as the rationale to make Roe v Wade the law of the land. It's unconstitutional because Roe V Wade is a states' right issue. Prior to Roe v Wade it was being treated as a states' right issue because abortion on demand was legal in New York and California while being illegal in all other states.
Uh yeah, war for oil. How's that working out for ya? In my area gas prices aren't any cheaper. Besides, everyone knows you've got it all wrong! Didn't you get the barking moonbat memo? Sheesh, everyone knows we went to war where Cheney could make more money with Halliburton. /sarc Sally | Email | Homepage | 02.02.06 - 1:24 pm Direct link to this comment

you are stupid Sally. What is constitutional or unconstitutional is what the latest ruling of the court decides. you may disagree with the ruling but the constitution does not interprete itself. What is strange about Sally and her ilk, is that they claim to want a nonintrusive government, but cling to the belief that right to privacy is not in the Constitution. They desperatly want a constitution that does not imply a right to privacy as if privacy is some kind of evil.

So you cons are aginst Mike saying, hey that gay dude won his election to the Senate by backing anti-gay policy? Wouldn't you want to know why a GAy dude backs an anti-gat agenda? I think we should have scientists researching this type of bahavior. It's not homophobic to ask that question. It's homophobic not to ask that question. @Sally,
A Pentagon study, completed last summer, examined the deaths of 93 Marines who suffered upper body wounds in Iraq between 2003 and 2005. It concluded that a better designed armored vest could have saved 74 of them, or 80 percent. The number would be much higher if Army deaths had also been included in the study.
For the moment, the only explanation the military has for purchasing inadequately designed body armor is that a larger vest capable of protecting the torso and shoulders would have been too cumbersome for troops in the field. But that argument is a thin one, given that the Marine Corps began to order the better designed vests once the study results were known.
Regrettably, even now there is a lag in getting the better vests to the troops. The New York Times reports that as of December, less than 10 percent of 28,000 ceramic vests had been issued to Marines in Iraq. Army troops face even longer delays.
The NYT reported about this study on January 7, 2006 Willem van Oranje | Email | Homepage | 02.02.06 - 9:47 pm Direct link to this comment

You people still believe this story?? It's completely retarded.
Tell me, which scenario is more likely?
1) A Senator gets a BJ in a public restroom at a busy train station (that alone is totally absurd), and a prominent blogger is using that knowledge to publically blackmail him (seriously, who'd be that stupid to break the law and let the whole world know about it?).
or...
2) A prominnet blogger posted a fake letter to generate a lot of attention and indirectly threaten all the closet congressman "hypocrites" out there.
#2 just seems way more rational than #1. Heck, #2 seems like a pretty good idea given this blogger's motives. But #1 is insane. DT | Email | Homepage | 02.02.06 - 10:31 pm Direct link to this comment

Wrote "Willem van Oranje" -
"The NYT reported ... "
THAT in itself should be THE primary caveat.
What Willy AND the disgraced NYT failed to report is that the TROOPS & MARINES don't WANT no more steeking 'body armor'!
As a former Infantryman, I can attest to the fact that the advantages of "body armor" are very limited & severely exagerrated.
BUTT ...
I digress:
Just thought I'd pop in for a daily dose of cheerleading and common sense:

So: someone who is GAY has his little knickers in a twist because some politician didn't vote the way HE thought he should vote. And this is justification for accusing said politician of being GAY in an attempt to ruin his career. (Jeez. Like bein' gay is BAD or somethin'). What? Oh. Not because he's gay, but because he's such a hypocrite? Sorry. My mistake. Let's just try to ruin everyone's career, everywhere then. Hypocrisy must not be tolerated!
Priceless.

I though wanted to touch on this blogg if you were wise you should have posted the announcement instead you have belittled and beguiled your own reputation as a lech and a travesty to your own party.
As R it sucks right now because I know we have leadership that is destroying the fabric of America but you offer for those who may even considering a change in Novemember nothing new!!
You are as vile and lack substance as they do it is just more of the same. You have no intregrity.
