The best thing for voters who are dissatisfied with McCain to do is to donate to Bob Barr's Libertarian campaign and to convince other former and potential doners to the RNC to do likewise. While a large protest vote for Barr (who at least is conservative) simply isn't going to happen, donations, even by people who ultimately vote Republican, will be noticed by the RNC.
