Back in my day, to the best of my knowledge, the f-word was used very judiciously, no matter what crowd you ran with. My guess is it is a modern day phenomenon that it is now just another word to use instead of "really" or some other superlative.

Here's a sad fact: We were so stunned by the very first hour of this Deadwood show (of three seasons, 12 hrs each) that we each called our Mom's to ask about the historical use of the f-word. My Dad's too stoic, and hers is dead, so we went with Moms. She was kind enough to her Mom not ask about the other words; I was not. And I promise you, I will be paying, not for saying the words, but for implying them by saying 'c-word' and 'blank-sucker' for a very long time.
'C-word' ticked her off, being the single most disgusting/debasing word to women (and therefore, to men). But like an idiot, I mentioned 'blank sucker' (those exact words) which is another one I was having trouble with Deadwood about, she beat me with an imaginary peach switch from 1,600 miles away. Which is pretty impressive considering I was never hit with one of those things as a child. Can't say that anymore. I won't be asking her 'how things were' when it comes to swearing anytime soon again.
Once she was done explaining that 'I'm *smack* your *smack* Mother, you *smack* sleazy piece *smack* of garbage', she mentioned that she never even HEARD the f-word until she was in college. Here's the kicker: She learned the always evil c-word from us kids!
I'm guessing it wasn't from me, since I only used the 'c-word' a few times to my knowledge, and received a talkdown for from a 15 year old girl like you wouldn't believe (young women can beat a guy down as well as any full-grown one imo).
Eeeehhhnyway, my folks agree with you completely, Le. This appears to be a 'new thing', regardless of what our liberal friends would have us believe. I'm not sure what to make of it.
Apologies for the length of this comment.

We recently rented Little Miss Sunshine. Now, really, I can let a curse word or two go by, but when it got to be the f-word every other sentence, I had to get up and do something else. This movie was very dear, and would have been absolutely just as good without any swearing.
SPOILER ALERT
I later saw the last half hour or so after the grandpa died and there was a lot less cursing and the ending was hilarious.
If I know it's a movie that's been well reviewed but is filled with cursing, I generally wait until they show it on the major networks without cursing. But it's getting that many of the curse words or foul words are now being allowed through. I would SO purchase movies with the swearing removed or dubbed over if there were such a business. I'm not fond of Hollywood.

My dear friend Le, you HAVE to order the first season's dvds of Deadwood. You'll get to hear things like
I'll have a blanking fried egg.
What blanking time is it?
Can I have a blanking dollar to buy a blanking lantern you blank sucker?
You get to fill in the blanks . It's almost comical. Wait, it gets worse: of the four episodes we watched, two were written by women! And oddly enough, that's when the c-word got bandied about with wild abandon.
I'm sexist enough to believe that women are unquestionably our species' better half. But those two writer women threw my entire thesis into question.
That said, the best part of Little Miss Sunshine was after her/the family's crazy dance was over, and that biker pervert dude stood up and said "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaah"! Too funny .

I personally just loved the crazy dance. lol It just made me squirm all over inside, but laugh on the outside. That was really, really funny. In any other movie the whole audience would have stood up and cheered after an awkward silence, but you're right, it was so funny when the biker guy stood up alone!
