While it can be helpful to some to provide email newsletters in addition to RSS, that does not come without the price of keeping that list up-to-date and dealing with bounced mail. It will add work to your load.
One thing I believe everyone should be doing is educating everyone we know about RSS and getting them setup with an RSS client. It opens so many doors for the user! This would solve the problem practically overnight 
While I agree, getting some people to check that RSS client may be another story. Sure if they were truly dedicated and opened it as if they were getting email but unfortunately many people do not do this and may never do this. There is a website called bloglet.com which allows the blogger to register and then put a form on their blog which when someone subscribes they are immediately sent a copy of the post. Unfortunately though there are still some bugs in it.
