FYI It seems Pope Benedict is already looking forward to another trip, this one to his native Germany next year. It's at the Reuters religion blog FaithWorld -- http://blogs.reuters.com/faithwo...rip-to-germany/

Why not consult some erudite Jews on the subject rather than renegade Catholics? Rabbi David Dalin "The Myth of Hitler's Pope" and Rabbi Jacob Neusner, much quoted by Benedict XVI , are probably better informed about anti-semitism ,and realise that real differences about whether Messiah has come are not anti-semitic.

Does Carroll take a stand against the suffering which the Jewish people have endured by the attitude to Israel taken by the United Nations and the left-wing "intelligentsia" to which he belongs? Or is Jewiush suffering merely a weapon to be misused in an attempt to discredit the Church and the doctrine of the Incarnation?

Please don't call James Carroll a "scholar". He is an bitter but intelligent well- read journalist with an axe to grind. But he is not a historical scholar.
