The fact remains that even if someone is born to a Jewish mother, if he later joins another faith, he becomes an ex Jew.
Just as a Catholic who converted to Islam could not still claim to be a 'catholic' - equally, a Jew who becomes a Catholic is no longer 'jewish'.
Of course the person still has a Jewish heritage, and it's wonderful that this particular man feels a connection to Israel. But he can't claim to be Jewish - he's not.
