Gravatar In terms of benefit to the ticket, I don't think the Republicans could have hoped for a better choice than Biden. The guy is, for lack of a better term, a total tool. As the recently-concluded presidential primaries demonstrated, no one outside of Delaware takes him seriously, and he managed to sabotage his presidential run 20 years ago by opening his mouth. Obama's shown himself to be one of the bigger gaffe-producing politicians around, but Biden will make him look like he's taken a vow of silence by comparison.

If the Democrats really wanted to emphasize this Catholic thing in their ticket, Obama should've picked someone like Bob Casey, one of the few Catholic Democrats left who hasn't chosen Caesar over Christ. I guess the pro-life speaking-truth-to-power aspects of Casey's candidacy would've been too much, though.

At this point, McCain could pick almost anyone and be better off. From a Catholic perspective, let's hope he doesn't blow it by picking someone like Tom Ridge. Obama's clearly chosen the moral low road in this campaign, and it would be senseless for McCain to follow.

Gravatar I agree totally Jonathan and Chris. Earlier this spring my 10 yr old daughter was reading me the PreAmble of the Constitution and all of a sudden the phrase .."promote the general Welfare,.." struck me like a truck. Abortion does the exact opposite, it promotes the individual license to kill over the general Welfare, also known as the citizens of this country.
From 1973 to present over 1 million lives have been taken. These 35+ million lives already would have been contributing payroll taxes and other taxes into the treasury. Not too mention the impending doom of social security. This would not be the case if these lives were not snuffed out but allowed to live and grow into productive working adults paying into FICA.
Yet some who claim to be Catholic are pro-choice. Those who live this have excommunicated themselves from the Church due to their opposite belief of the Church:Abortion is Murder!
Pelosi, Biden you aren't Catholic quit lying!!!

Gravatar I strongly disagree with the premise that 'the issues pertaining to the sanctity of human life are the "great civil rights issues of this generation."'

There are much more pressing issues than abortion. We should concern ourselves with justice for those who are actually alive, not those who are potentially alive.

Gravatar "potentially alive"?

Ouch. Really, Mark -- perhaps you ought to revisit some basic textbooks in human biology.
