Ty's wins over UM and Tenn were wins against, as always with Ty, teams with weak QBs. Tenn, if I remember correctly, had gone to their third string QB and I think Henne was injured for the UM game. Am I correct in remembering this?

You may have re-evaluate your statistics, as it may not be accurate to classify a field goal attempt as a scoring opportunity.

Any idea where I can find the coverage map for this sunday? I'm afraid Baltimore might not get the game...

Go Bills- The game is on ESPN2 & ESPN2HD nationwide so there is no need for coverage maps.

In that win over Tennessee, was't Clausen's brother Rick the QB for part of the game.

ah, an elvis costello reference. nice.

Some of your percentages are wrong. Scoring 1 point higher than 27 is a 3.7% improvement, and scoring 1 point higher than 28 is a 3.5% improvement. Sorry to be nitpicky.

...always thought PF meant points forced and PA meant points allowed. am I wrong?

The caution against taking the Huskies too lightly is well taken. Funny things happen when teams from our part of the country go to the West Coast. We haven't yet won on the road, and I believe we have turned the ball over 8 times in two road games -- the most likely scenario for an upset is if we turn it over. I'd rather have our guys expecting to have to be focused and play 60 hard minutes.

Jack B. - your remembrance of the ND-Tennessee game is a reminder that QBs get hurt. We can't afford that as the drop-off in play would be substantial, IMO.

I too am a worrywart and fret that the IRISH will be overconfident and get bushwhacked. Yet the Huskies are deep in the tank and so is TW.

However, what if TW could pull the upset? Would it guarantee him and his staff another year? I think not. Will TW try trick plays on offense as well as trickery on special teams to level the playing field? Could be, but I never saw cleverness while he took up space for a number of years on the ND sidelines.
Go IRISH, send TW to the links.

I've read throughout the week various sources, fans, etc. bring up the dreaded "don't take this team lightly" quip.

I agree, ND cannot afford to do that, but I really don't think this team has accomplished enough this season to take any team "lightly". I trust the staff will not let that happen, as well. However, I agree wholeheartedly that Willingham is capable of waking up Saturday morning with the intention of winning the game. 21-0 Irish in the 1st half will have him looking forward to trying out his new sand wedge on Sunday.

Every time I think about this game rationally, I think that there is no chance that we lose.

But here's the problem: If we win, it's a non-story. However, if we lose, Ty and Ty's recruits, beat Charlie and Charlie's recruits. While there will undoubtedly be more important and more intriguing storylines this week, the Mickey-Mouse club, headed up by John Saunders, mousekeeter extraordinaire, will find a way to drag us through the mud one more time. It's a lose/lose situation.

anyone else see that a walk on kicker just made the traveling squad for tomorrow?

Let's put this here BEFORE tomorrow night: what happens IF we lose? If we have had some type of problem, or problems, with the job that Ty did at du Lac, then what about CW? Aren't we compelled by our past to 'alter' our situation?

Will we crank up another stream of excuses? The cold waters of the north Pacific, and their effects on playing conditions? The long plane ride?

It makes me feel a bit uneasy that we're almost in November, yet we're still contemplating the 'what-if' game against UW, one of the worst teams we've played in decades. Supposedly TW can't recruit and CW can. After 4 years each, the difference between both programs should be measurable in light years.

A note on the post: nice to see the 'long-drive' breakdown for our 'O,' though it'd feel better if we helped our running backs. As for the 'D' analysis: their (D) two supposed breakdowns this year (MSU; UNC) came with a huge helping hand from our offense. AT MSU, our O did nothing but 3 and outs all day -- our D hung in until the 4th qtr. We gave up lots of yards to UNC, but only 16 or 19 points via defense.

A ground game (read: OL) would make this a very strong Top 30/25 team.

The chance of ND losing tomorrow is about the same chance as the sun not rising, subject only to an exception in case ND players are injured. UW is absolutely putrid, although I think their backup QB could be a good player in time., and they have some talented freshman on offense. I'm not saying it will necessarily be a blowout, but I say that only because Weis has a tendency to just run the ball 3 times and punt once victory is assured.

ND fans worry about UW because that is the nature of ND fans (I don't mean that in a bad way at all). There is a huge gap between the programs, and that's not so much a testament to ND as it is to how horrible UW is. Even with some decent talent in their freshman class, there is absolutely no reason to doubt that they will be in the cellar of the Pac-10 for the next few years at least, along with the even more putrid Washington State (now THAT is a team that's so horrible they are on the verge of becoming legendary).

Tenn's 3rd string QB was horrible that year Ty beat them. I am absolutely serious when I say that I had not one but two guys on my college flag football team who were more talented than he was. If you remember, he pulled a Pat Dillingham and gave the Irish the winning TD. The Michigan game Ty won that year I believe Henne played in. I think Michigan absolutely dominated the first half but Carr made several gutless decisions that resulted in 4 first half UM field goals and a 12-0 lead. Then Ty realized in the second half that he had a decent running back in Walker, who was given the ball and rushed for over a 100 yards.

My long-winded point being: UW sucks almost as much as Ty, and that team has quit on him (a logical thing to do). If UW doesn't play nickel all day, I'll be pretty surprised if Clausen doesn't throw for 300 against them. 400 is not out of the question. As bad as UW is, their secondary is especially bad. Go Irish!

I have posted on various sites I see the Irish losing this week. Why? I am just getting a very bad feeling about this team since losing to NC. They have been terrible on the road so far this year as TO's have killed them. I sure hope I am way odff base.

Jack Burton and all,

I was at that TN game in 2004 when the Irish prevailed. TN was playing two true freshmen (Brett Schaefer & Erik Ainge) at QB for every game that season up to the time when Schaefer got hurt against South Carolina a week or two before the Irish paid a visit to Neyland stadium. In a questionable move, for some reason on the last play of the first half (or near last play) when the situation called for running out the clock, TN decided to try a deep pass play and Ainge ended up getting sacked and hurt his shoulder...done for the season. On came QB # 3 for the Vols, Rick Clausen who played just awful including an interception returned for a TD by a ND linebacker (memory does not allow me to recall just who it was) while Clausen was being tackled. Tennessee's offense pretty much sucked the entire second half but Clausen actually played the rest of the season pretty strong including leading the Vols to a big Cotton Bowl win against Texas A&M on January 1.

Ty has a thing for winning games hes not suppose to.

Also....Watch out for that kid.

David Ruffer. Heard he was a beast.

There are high schools in the area who could beat the Huskies. Even if we play poorly, TO's and penalties will favor the Irish tonight.

Anyone know if/where I can at least get radio play-by-play on the internet of the game? I'm stuck in Hong Kong, and not about to download some Chinese "see ESPN for free" virus-monster.

Any sugggestions gleefully accepted.

GO IRISH!

Burbank Steve: Try www.channelsurfing.net. I've never used it to watch ND, but I'm using it right now to watch Florida iviscerating Kentucky. Good luck, and Go Irish!

Correction: eviscerating

Burbank Steve: I was able to watch the UNC game at justin.tv - I'm going to try to do the same thing tonight and will post a link if I can find it. You'll definitely be able to find a radio broadcast at wvfi.nd.edu.

Man, anyone out there see what UNC did to Boston College?

Four TDs for Hakeem Nicks today.

North Carolina must have been very angry with themselves for dropping the ball against Virginia last week and B. College were the innocent bystanders.

Good teams bounce back after disappointments and go nuts on visiting opponents, so I guess the Tarheels are a good team.

I hope the Irish take out some frustration on the Huskies in a few hours. Go Irish!

Joe S - Exactly. If the Irish can do that same sort of thing today, it'll be a very good sign.

north carolina destroyed bc today. we basically had the tar heels whipped until we gave it away. logically, we should be able to defeat the eagles this year. right... ?

It does look like the game is being streamed at channelsurfing.net, btw.

Mich St. losing 21-14 to Michigan....so I guess it doesn't matter who the coach is, MSU id destined to tank over the second half of a season? We gotta stop losing to those jokers--it never looks good at the end of the season.

Pitt coming back against Rutgers, but they're not looking great.

I'm watching the 2nd half of UT-OSU, and man, it's pretty entertaining. OSU is pretty scary running the ball, they just stop themselves with penalties. Allegedly they play defense in the Big 12....

Okay, forget that about PITT coming back...48-31 Rutgers, end of the 3rd q.

This link might get you the game
http://www.channelsurfing.net/wa...espn2- test.html

MSU came back and put the hammer on UM. And by "the hammer" I mean Javon Ringer. He's just a beast.

So good to see that ESPN doesn't have any "better" games to show instead of our Irish this week! Go Irish!

Is Charlie rockin' the faux hawk?

maybe the blitz will work against Ty...remember Quinn as sophomore?

FLOYDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

Yes!!!!

Thanks to the channelsurfing.net recommenders: I am watching a game I thought I would miss.

Also, time to drop the Bob Davie antagonism. As with his last ND broadcast (ND-MSU upset), he is being nothing but gracious and fair.

Yeah...although a bizarre thought - we have 2 (3?) of the worst coaches in ND history in the same place

What a segway...from slicing fish to slicing a defense! The linguistic talents of these commentators never cease to amaze me!

Floyd will be a monster by the time he graduates

overconfidence?

I hope he graduates...

ND always graduates their players...well almost always

I mean if he leaves early.

Floyd...Tate...Floyd...Tate...Floyd...Tate

Speaking from experience, Bobby?

Wow. I am gonna be incredibly drunk tonight!

I feel sorry for Ty...but I still want a blowout, we need it

Agreed, DayBreak, but the outcome of the game doesn't really change anything for me! It's either drunk irritated Daddy (most of last year), or drunk happy Daddy (most of this year)!

Let's get one more before the break. TD on a 30 yd pass?

We still can't get consistent running going

WTF Ty!?!?!

Aldridge!

Ok, so far, I won't be needing the mute button.

I could be blind, but I believe his left arm was wrapped up in Mosely's right arm.

Davies is sounding like he's finally gotten over it...or maybe it's Prozac

Footbaaaawwww

Late to the thread (but not the game, VicPaul LOL) - but I'll be intermittent. Good to see y'all here - Go Irish!

oh come on! it hit your hands!

better than a punt

Denver, I saw it to. Their arms were linked.

where is everyone tonight?

I think the fans are out at sportsbars on a Sat night...almost went myself except for my cold

Saaaaave by Zeeeeerooooo

I finally found a good Irish pub nearby. only took me a month.

do they serve real ale...room temp?

I agree with Planet - Davie sounds good - and he's a good commentator when he's on his game.

FG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea Brandon!!

Where's the game day photo?

Well the pub is in a strip mall. which really bothered me. but I went in and its:

1. all an all wooden bar
2. Real hurley sticks on the wall
3. Fireplace.
4. Hot red-headed bartendress
5. 12 Irish whiskies
6. Guinness, Harps, Smithwicks, Beamish, Yuengling, a HOUSE Irish Ale, and Magners on TAP
7. Irish stew
8. Full irish breakfast
9 I can buy Irish bangers, rashers, black and white pudding by the lb to take home!

that pub is better than anything in SB...especially like #4...none of those here

Oh I forgot about Mulligans...still missing #4 though

Oh my gosh - Davie said "Clausen" and "Heisman" in the same sentence.

PlanetEire you been to the Fiddlers Hearth? Thats a decent pub for SB. great food!

I'm not watching the game, but I saw that Clausen's only 6/16. What gives? How's he playing, and how are the receivers playing?

Clausen is missing a lot today...

He's firing some passes in fast and deep, but the ball is getting there.

Name of the night:

Washington player Jordan White-Frisbee.

Like you did when we were tied with #1 Nebraska and could have at least TRIED to drive down to field to win the game, Bobby? Wait......

"you've never seen baggage claim, have you Bob" LOL. "Oh, there was no jet when I was at ND; now there's a jet." For some reason that exchange cracked me up.

Another fun note, touched on earlier, the last four ND coaches will be on during this game:

Holtz: studio
Davie: booth
Ty: Washington
Weis: ND

Another fun note, touched on earlier, the last four ND coaches will be on during this game:

Who here thinks that's actually a cardboard cutout of Joe Pa up there in the booth?

LOL I could see that OC mj

Hey now. Any true football fan loves Joe Pa

Of course...how could I forget Fiddlers daybreak...still no hot redheads

True. No hot red heads. But god knows i love the Fiddler. Oyster shots!

i was thinking the same exact thing when he said that denverirish.. i was only like 10 at the time, but i remember there being 50 some seconds that he decided to waste. and then doing the same thing against michigan state later that year

I remember the Nebraska game thru a very drunken haze. its mostly gone due to black out rage.

My mom sat next to Bob Davies on a flight while he was coach. 50% of me wishes the plan crashed.

I forgot...does fiddlers have a fireplace?

Drew, I was at the game, and man, we had the momentum, could have gotten into FG range. Bob killed it. I'll never forgive him for giving Crouch the Heisman on a silver platter, but I agree he has been much better on the ND broadcasts recently. I can't really hate him anymore.

First half thoughts: we should be up by 28, at least. Washington is NOT good. Jimmy's off, needs to get focused. If he does, we score 35 in the second half. If he doesn't, he could make a crucial mistake and we could let UW back in (a lot else would have to happen, but still...).

Let's win this by 40+, guys. We should--easily. We just have to go DO it.

Fiddler DOES have a fireplace.

another thing about that Nebraska game...I remember seeing more red than green in the stands...it was embarassing

ok daybreak...I'm there on Monday

Why don't we see more Robert Hughes on the field? Heck, why don't we run a bit more if Clausen is off target tonight?

Where is Voice?

Agree Nate, Clausen is a little off. Could we just put together a complete 2nd half, please?

I'm ok with Aldridge; some have speculated Hughes might be banged up. Did Olsen return?

PlanetEire,

Get the Scotch Eggs. Amazing. It'll take 3 years off your life...but worth it.

clausen has never had a comfortable lead...could be messing with his psyche

Daybreak-
Scotch Eggs huh...is that what I think it is? Like the beginning of Rocky sans juice but with Scotch?

Planet, Yup, that was the first time (I know of) that the administration started "cracking down" on students selling their family-tickets online. It was truly embarrassing to see that much red in the stands, but I gave their fans tons of credit for traveling well (and actually being polite!)

Denver-
I think the SB airport had more private flights that day than ever before

Planet -

A Scotch egg consists of a hard-boiled egg, wrapped in a sausage meat mixture, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep-fried...then dipped with dijon mustard.

I will envy you

Daybreak-

wow-just like the old country right...well maybe not with scotch

Anyone see Olsen return to the game?

what a catch by Golden

"Ran the baaawwww"

Game back on TV? Still not on ESPN360.

Olsen is back in

Aldridge!!!

Thanks OC!

epee-

try
http://www.channelsurfing.net/wa...net/wa...espn2- test.html

Still haven't started on 360. How far into 2nd half on TV?

alright...love those running tds

OK, kick off.

Thanks Planet!

epee-

last link was wrong
here's link for real time viewing

http://www.channelsurfing.net/wa...espn2- test.html

LOL classic Ty

We should have 40points right now. this sucks

Players not lining up correctly? Too many men in the huddle?

Wow....for some reason, as an ND fan, this seems all too familiar.

goodwin is fast

Planet, thanks but it only works with Windoze, I'm a MacCatholic. (Or is it iCatholic?)

ND TD -- I seem to be about 4-5 minutes behind TV.

No one should have to be MacCatholic. Convert to the winning side.

SMITH!!!

they must think that mac users don't watch sports...they just create art and such

wash receivers suck

put Montana in!

Day, I became a MacCatholic at ND in 1984. I was teaching there when Apple came in and set up the faculty computing office across the hall from me. Was I spoiled by Apple. Bought a Mac a year later and been loyal ever since.

And my youngest still uses that Mac from 1985 for some great old text games.

I use mac at school too...it;s like going from tennis to racket ball every day

I get most sports on the iMac via ESPN360, not just live ESPN. The NBC Olympics looked great on the iMac -- especially those three ND fencers!

new thread on the blog folks

AWESOME!

Guys - this team sucks - we should be up by a lot more that 24 right now and def should not have given up 3 sacks.

LITTLE SLOPPY ON THAT BALL HANDLING SMITH!

Love the fake!!

not sure I like that call...looks like we're trying to emberass Ty

WTF CLAUSEN!!!

Aren't we? (trying to embarass ty?)

WOW! WE HAVE A MEDIOCRE KICKER!!

We have a kicker?!

40+ yarder!

woo hoo! (Hey Epee, weren't you the one asking me way back in the early part of the season about my diss defense? I have a date for it - Dec 4th).

usta-

the line was nd by 11...i like this score just fine

Were you perhaps suggesting to the coach that he should throw a screen pass on 3rd and long after running (unsuccessfully) up the middle for no gain on 1st and 2nd, Bobby?

t2 - alright. You're almost there!

Guys, there's a new post above (posted at halftime) for comments...

Tyrone Willingham needs to become a high school coach and just drop out of the public eye

everyone asleep? WE SCORED!

you old bums! there is a game on! Wake up!

"basebaaaaaw"

Epee, thanks! I'm headed to the other thread, now ;-)

PLAY NATE MONTANA!!

you all disappoint me

DayBreakBoys

My mom sat next to Bob Davies on a flight while he was coach. 50% of me wishes the plan crashed.

You don't like your mom? :>))

Hey now. Any true football fan loves Joe Pa

I used to like him until he gave a nod and a wink to the player who sexually assualted a girl and now half of his team is in legal trouble.

At SeaTac getting ready to board a flight to Guaymas, Mexico. This place looks like O'Hare with all the Irish walking around. Met up with VicPaul at the tailgate and had a nice visit with him. ndmom4ever, #3 son and I were in the UW Alum section on the 30, but we were as gracious as we could be. I think the only time they cheered was when Ruffer missed the PAT (they were mostly gone by the time UW scored with 2+ to go). I think the level of the competition allowed Charlie to be innovative without purposefully beating up on them. I mean it's pitiful what they've been reduced to, and I shudder what could have happened to ND had we kept Ty - that was an excellent article in Saturday's Trib about the alarming lack of recruiting that doomed Ty - the REAL reason he was fired. Check it out. And bring on Pitt!
Final note: Great job by the Alumni Band, performed at the tailgate with the cheerleaders. There was one very very old dude in a wheelchair with a Leatherheads football helmet on, that was stamped 1921 on the back. Bet he had some stories....

The chart also points out that while ND is 5 - 2, only 2 of 7 opp have an average game score on the plus side (MSU & NC)
