What if Paddy Mullen (among many others) turns out to be a great fit at DT? He compares very well both size and speed-wise with many of the top DTs coming out this year? He's shorter than Lewis, which is a plus, and he's already 265.

I suspect think things may not be quite so dire even if Lewis and McCoy choose to go elsewhere . . . .

What if Mullen doesn't pan out at DT and is a better player at another position? What if he gets hurt?

Mullen is a great player in that he provides a lot of flexibility, but the example of Mullen is exactly why we need another DT in this class.

Mullen and Lewis - terrific
Mullen and McCoy - terrific
Mullen - not enough

Landri is only around for 2006, and Laws is the only other proven DT on the roster. He leaves after 2007.

it would be quite a blow to whiff on our defensive line recruiting. but these problems are well documented in the media which is definitely something recruits pay attention to. mccoy and lewis could be getting boat loads of playing time inside the first half of the season with some early success.

You forgot cornerback Malcome Jenkins in 05 for the Buckeyes, he started most of the year and will be a stud

Safeties, not corners.

As the Scarlett and Gray Gods smile down on this blog. Yes, I love it Silver Domers. Examine our strategy for Operation "Excellence".
Good analysis. The real secret to Tressel's "Sauce" is that he recruits guys that are versatile, who can play many positions.
He's got a "Mad Money" approach too his players: "Are You Diversified??".

silver domers? if i were ever to spend my time posting my opinions on websites devoted to opposing teams (and assuming others care about them), i would at least show a little respect for those who are providing the forum for me to do such. but i suppose the difference is that i'm not an ohio state fan.

O-Nastee,

OSU was the better team on Monday; no doubt about it. TO answer your question, No, ND has not been diversified. I think this justifies the firing of Ty Willingham in late 2004. Too early to tell on how Weis's recruiting classes will actually perform at the college leve, but indications are they have recruited some of the top high schoolers in the country. To put it in perspective that OSU fans would understand, it is going from Cooper to Tressel. They tired of never winning the big one and being slightly above average. In comes Tressel. He needed a little time to get the program headed in the right direction. I am confident we will see Weis do the same at ND. Ara, Dan, and Holtz were not able to bring home the bacon until their respective third years. I am willing to give Weis more than one year here. Again, congrats to the Buckeyes, they showed that they are used to playing in the BCS. We are not going to disagree with that. In closing, to paraphrase Ronald Reagan's (aka as the Gipper, I may add) 1980 campaign message, "It is morning again in [Notre Dame country]." GO IRISH!

level instead of leve.

"He's got a "Mad Money" approach too his players"

lmao. no kidding. give 'em mad money. *coughcough$3000stolenfromhawk' sapartmentcoughcough*

Remember though, Weis hasn't gotten his chance to draft yet. Let's see what happens in 2 years when HIS recruits start showing their skills.

Have been following the recruiting for several weeks. This recruiting class looks very good on offense, but weaker on Defense and Linebacker. Michael's assessment is correct here, good show. However, the pass defenders look better than we have had of recent days, and that does shore up some weakness that ND has shown the past 4-5 years. Concern on safety is valid. That's where we were burned badly many times.

Check this dude's site for a different reason for our shortcomings...seems interesting...

Raeshon McNeil looked pretty darn good in the Army HS game today. He played coverage well and even returned a blocked FG for a TD. Gerald McCoy had the most dominating game on defense--he would be a huge asset for ND.

You guys just need linebackers and corners. Your over evaluating. D's not bad. O-state beat you on the vertical game. D line looked solid for 3 and a half quarters.

wow mcneil was good today. shouldve gotten the mvp for the east over wells, who had a TON of carries, and while he looked good, he wasnt outstanding. no one completed a pass against mcneil, he had 3 or 4 deflections, almost blocked 2 punts, almost blocked the fg that DID get blocked by a DL, and showed nice moves running it back. i'd be happy just with him, but walls (who didnt play bc of injury) should be a catch as well. so now we have 2 spots left with young, mccoy, and mustain still being recruited. any thoughts on the outcome?

I kinda agree w/Nastee. I have yet to see our D-line be dominated to a point where I'm actually embarassed for them as I have been numerous times w/our DB's (zibby not included). Still, it would be nice to see a Zorich clone emerge
on the D-line to help with the nastiness factor.

I agree that our D-line was effective in stopping Pittman, but they didn't get any pressue on Smith when they needed too

We've only signed one LB in this class so far, and it doesn't look like we'll be getting any more. Also, we are a bit short on receivers in the class.

It is a far better class than anything Ty Willie got, but the limitations on numbers mean that there will be some recruiting gaps in any given class.

The key is to have a plan each year to fill gaps and to take care of the players when they show up.

The biggest problem with Ty Willie's recruiiting is that he had far too many quality players transfer. (How scary would we have been in 2 tight end sets with Olsen and Fasano?) I get the feeling that Charlie won't have that problem.

FYI: The morning in America campaign was Reagan's re-election message in '84, not '80.

Dam, Sporting News does not like Silver Domer nation.

Neil, we have verbals from Morrice Richardson, Toryan Smith, and Jashaad Gaines. Richardson said he was recruited to play Will, Smith to play Mike, and it's been suggested that Gaines will play the Apache.

Our LB recruiting has been very solid this year.

The Irish have done a great job with balanced recruiting this year, as you have mentioned. It honestly looks like a depth chart - adding a DT (Kates? Since McCoy and Lewis both are out of the picture) and Sam Young hopefully will be enough to ensure solid athletes at every position.

To me, the LB corps looks great with Richardson, Smith, and Gaines. Smith seems pretty underrated by recruiting services, so I hope he'll be a great surprise.

preetom: McCoy out of the picture? It's uncertain, sure, but at last check, McCoy is still undecided, and will announce near signing day. McCoy and Young are the last pieces of this class, as you said. Weis has done quite well, getting excellent talent at every position.

oops. new last check. ND's out for McCoy. Young, perhaps Kates, perhaps (gasp) Mustain. Not good news, but not a heartbreaker either. McCoy wasn't a gimme, and it would have been quite fortunate if ND landed him. But it was not to be.

I guess not, but it still woulda been nice! Now if McCoy ends up at SC, .. oye ..

Chris Wells won the MVP of the US Army AA game due to OSU favorism. He was great but not outstanding. They weren't rotating lots of players in the 4th qtr for us to see more out of other players who didnt play all 3 qtrs.

Kudos to Raeshon McNeil for being the best defensive player in AA.

Chris Wells is awesome baby!!!!!!!!!!

Anon

Thanks for setting the year straight. I was only 12 when Reagan was elected in 1980 and 16 in 84. Nonetheless, it did not diminish the sentiment. Thanks.

The Sporting News, what a joke. Isn't that the same publication that named the newly crowned NFL Defensive Player Of The Year the most overrated player in the NFL a year ago?:

http://tsn.sportingnews.com/excl...3/586318- p.html

Think about our DB's coming in next year. McNeil isn't even our "first choice" at corner and look at the game he had on Saturday. Between him and Walls, we'll have a couple quality corners for the next few years.

The problem with the D-Line isn't talent, it's depth and size. We don't have a big-time run stuffing DT in the middle. That allows opposing OL's to keep one man on blitz pickup and/or double team someone who beats their first man. That severely limits our pressure and exposes our secondary even more. McCoy is going to be a stud, so let's hope he goes to OU, not SC. Kates could be a good pickup as he seems to have pretty good size and apparently still wants to go to Our Lady.

McCoy isn't out yet.

Jake: There are a bunch of news articles out, one from the SBT, that reiterate that McCoy has it down to 3 schools, and ND isn't one of them. Unless an out-of-the-blue announcement comes, McCoy is out.

We just lost Fasano to the NFL draft.

While I agree with the assessment that OSU has better balance in their recruiting classes which helps us deal with the losses, you also have to look at the talent factor too and the number of recruits we took. Ohio State emphasizes the LB position, so since 2002, we've taken 16 of them including this years class and they had an average recruiting ranking of 3.53 (Rivals). This year alone, we've landed 3 LB's already and will probably take 2-3 more. In the same timeframe, Notre Dame has taken 11 LB's with an average ranking of 3.0. I don't really think the ranking gap justifies the talent gap. AJ Hawk was a 3 star recruit solely because he had an injury and missed the bulk of his senior season. Laurinatius who started this year as a freshman was on a 3 star player, but the Mr Minnesota Player of the Year. Ross Homan is ranked 10th at his position, but he's probably the best LB recruit that I've seen in some time. He had over 700 tackles in HS and rushed for 2,000 yards this season. In one televised game this year against a very good team, he had 36 tackles in 61 defensive plays. The players that OSU has taken are extremely good and like I said, LB is a position that OSU has always emphasized and that's why we're always strong in that department. That's why we lose our star LB trio this year, but will probably still have one of the best LB corps in the nation next year when all is said and done.

O Nasty of the Red and Gray,
HUM...."Mad MONEY" and Tressel in the same post....are you talking about his pre t0$U days or now??????

RE: Sporting News article, this 'journalism' is summed up in two words: PURDUE GRAD.

And there...you...go.

Here's the good news for the Irish in terms of early draft entries from next year's opponents and potential National Championship opponents:

Purdue: Ray Edwards (DE) and Bernard Pollard (S)
UCLA: Maurice Drew (RB)
USC: Reggie Bush (RB)and Winston Justice (OT. Also possibly LenDale White

National Title Contenders:
tOSU: Santonio Holmes (WR), Donte Whitner (S), and Ashton Youboty (CB)
Texas: Vince Young (QB)
Auburn: Stanley McGlover (DE)
Florida: Chad Jackson (WR)and Dee Webb (CB)

I also saw a blurb today that Penn St. loses 7 senior starters on D (in addition to QB Michael Robinson).

PSU is probably going to keep Paul Posluzny (sp?) though and he's on a level with AJ Hawk. Fortunately, he won't have quite the same supporting cast of Carpenter, Schlegel, etc.

ESPN is saying Posluznzyznuzy will stay for another year.

Yep, saw the same thing about Posluzny. I guess he has two partially torn ligaments, but reports say he'll be ready for spring ball.

Reports today indicate LenDale White will announce his intention to enter the NFL draft (GOOD!).

Here's something I found funny on the "Underclassmen" link to nfldraftcountdown.com:

Danieal Manning
CB Abilene Christian JR

Whoa!! I'm sure this guy has the scouts salivating! (I assume he has to have talent to be on this site, but it just looks funny with Greg Lee from Pitt above him and Laurence Maroney from Minnesota below.
