I'm gonna miss Fasano. |
Glad for him, though I'd sure like to see him come back. On the other hand, while you're right that he's likely to be remembered best for one October play, the play's likely to be the fumble against SC rather than the Montana Murkiewicz "pass right" play. |
I hope GMs call Coach Weis and ask for him to describe Fasano's abilities. |
This is good for him. Four years, a Notre Dame degree and a job right out of college. Can't get much better than that for a young guy. |
Good luck, Fasano. You'll be missed! |
Hopefully, a cameo on the Sopranos is in his near future. |
Thanks for putting Fasano's leaving in perspective. While I'd love to see him come back and help ND win a championship, how many of us can leave school after four years with a degree, a six-figure salary, and a four-year retirement plan? |
pass right still gets me every time.. |
He will be missed and was the best ND tight end since Derek Brown. I was always advocating more throws to him. I think the numbers would bear out that his catches declined throughout the year which I hope is corrected with next year's TE. |
With all of the "wide receiver"-type TE's coming out this year, I think it will be tough for Fasano to go on the first day. |
I think Fasano would be a great pickup for 'da Bears. Chicago needs a great TE who can really punish defenders in the running game, yet still snag some balls by sitting down over the middle or on flag routes. |
Good point JohnWA; CW definitely is respected and he's consistently talked up Fasano as being able to do both. |
Fasano could probably beat out Desmond Clark for the starting job as a rookie, we really should look at him HARD in the 3rd round if he's still there (2nd round if he has a great combine)... |
Well, Mel Kiper Jr. is projecting Fasano as an early 2nd rounder, and possibly a 1st rounder if he does well enough in the combine and his workouts. |
I guess I'd have to trust Kiper's take. Shows what I know! Sometimes you can try too hard to not be biased towards Notre Dame. . . |
Hey, Irish Rat, what about Tommy Thayer? He was a starter on the OL for "da Bears" during the '85 Superbowl season. Great guy; his high school team (Joliet Catholic) used to beat up on my Lockport Porters during that era. |
"In the end, though, what he'll probably be most remembered for is one play last October..." |
Paul, remember the one last play in October. I was there too. Wounda Coulda Shoulda doesn't get it. The only mistake was the PAC 10 refs. |
The reason the fumble is more prominently attached to October is that it's the only one of the two that happened in October. Pass Right was on Sept. 24th. |
I, for one, will never remember a great TE like Fasano for something as menial as a fumble. That's a naysayers attitude. I'll remember Pass Right, and the dozens of spectacular catches he has made over the years. Most notably, I think, was the game he played against Purdon't last year in a game in which we got wailed on. He was simply amazing that game, and played his heart out til the end. |
Thanks RG. Yet another dumb mistake on my part. That's it. I'm firing our fact checker. |
Didn't Rudy go to Joliet Catholic? |
Brad, I agree with you. Not much can be done for the fumble in Oct. That's over and done. I'll always remember Pass Right. That's when I drank the Kool-aid and knew, without a doubt, Weis was bringing something special back to ND. You can always count the Ws and Ls and most will forget the final score of all of them, but stuff like Pass Right tends to linger and reflect what's really important. |
While I am definitely sad to see Fasano go (who didn't like seeing the three primary receivers all 6' 5?), its probably for the best for him and seeing as he is getting his degree after four years, you can't fault him for deciding to move on. |
I don't know, Tony, Clark is pretty solid. He's a good run blocker; he has definitely had a hand in Thomas Jones being the only Bear other than Walter to go over 1,300 in a season (and Thomas Jones is so average the Bears used the #4 pick last year on Benson). I checked his stats and he's had some pretty good years catching the ball (51 for 566 and 6 TDs in '01 with the Bronocs; 44 for 443 and 2 TDs in '03). I think the last two years his catches are down due to the idiocy of Shoop and Shea. |
I definitely think Hoyte will get picked, my guess is 4th-5th due to his lack of size and speed. I think Mays will also go somewhere below that as well. At 6'1" 246 he has great run-stuffing ILB size, and both of these guess showed a great ability to blitz and disrupt the line of scrimage this year. Mays first step on blitzes has astounded me all year long, and you've got to think that someone out there would find a great spot for him at ILB in a 3-4, where LBs need to be able to pass rush straight up the field to disrupt the pocket. I see Hoyte as more of a Will backer in a 4-3. His ability to lay mutha's out will be well appreciated in the League. |
Another LB Question: It seems to me that if you're going to have 2 new LBs next year, it's better to have them on the edges and move Crum to Mike. Thoughts? |
Crum is too small to play Mike. I wouldn't be surprised if he moved to Will and Banda, Vernaglia, or Washington won the Apache spot. |
From what I've heard, and it might just be crap but I know some major contributors to the program, the thought process at the moment involves Crum moving over to Will. Apache at the moment depends on the younger safeties. If a younger guy can step up and really prove himself, then the thought is that Ndukwe will move down to Apache. Otherwise, expect to see Vernaglia lock up the Apache position (he's way too good of an athlete to be riding pine) and Mitchell and youngin' Scott Smith will compete for Mike. Watch out for frosh too, who knows about them. |
Based on what I've seen of Ndukwe, he's better suited for Apache than Safety. His first instinct is still always run (Exhibit A: he bites on Troy Smith's rather poor ball fake as Santonio Holmes blows right by him from the slot on that 85-yarder). I don't know if the coaching staff can get that out of him. At Apache, he can worry more about the run and if he does have coverage responsibilities, it will be on a much slower tight end or on a slower developing play to a back. |
While I agree that Ndukwe is better suited to Apache than FS, do we really want to remove experience from the secondary? If we have someone who can step up into the position and play at least as well, then I'm all for it, but who has that ability? |
The hope is David Bruton will be able to step in and play well at free safety. Remember he ran some with the first team during fall practice and he looked plenty fast enough during special teams. |
Other Domer Bears: |
Alan Page, excuse the typo. |
What do you guys think of Bruton's awareness? How well can he read the QB and such? |
Thanks WalterButkus! |
