1) Brady Quinn in 12 different poses.

This is too easy

14. A horrible box office failure. It played little to no role in ND football history.

1.) SI covers have included Tony Rice, Rick Meier, Ron Powlus, Brady Quinn - that's my best guess so far.

4.) My guess would be Ryan Harris

11.) The first homecoming game was 1957.

12.) That was my sophomore year, so I would go with Reggie Brooks

13.) Lou Holtz was responsible for 3 National Championships - 1989 with a win over UWV, 1990, which resulted in Miami winning the NC, and 1993, when ND's win and Nebraska's loss gave FSU the NC.

14.) Given Notre Dame's propensity to play a lot of good teams, including Navy in the old days and USC recently (as well as OSU when Eddie George won it) and Miami in the 80's, my answer for this would be d.31

17.) Great movie. There were a few "real coaches" in that movie, including Alonzo Stagg. My guess is Coach Howard Jones of USC was also the USC coach in "Knute Rockne All American."

20.) The 1992 squad that included Rick Meier and Reggie Brooks sent 11 players to the NFL in the draft. This is conjecture based on who was on that squad.

8) university of chicago. they quit the big ten to become a bastion of knowledge, but they were a powerhouse football team back in the day.

9. Well, one of them was definitely in Ireland against Navy. I'm guessing at Croke Park but don't know the year. The other game? Somewhere in Canada maybe? No idea here.

Well, one of them was definitely in Ireland against Navy. I'm guessing at Croke Park but don't know the year. The other game? Somewhere in Canada maybe?

Can't recall the year, but it was against Miami in Tokyo.

6. The Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium in New York City (know these for certain against Army).
Guesses:
Shibe Park in Philadelphia vs. Penn, Princeton
Comiskey Park in Chicago vs. NW, U of Chicago
Tiger Stadium in Detroit
Cleveland Municipal Stadium vs. Case Tech (now Case Western)?
Forbes Field in Pittsburgh vs. Pitt?
Memorial Stadium in Baltimore vs. navy?

8) Guesses:
Minnesota? Short history in Rockne era
Wisconsin? Lost during Ara's term once
Illinois? Haven't played them much

12) Guess: Rodney Culver

13. 2 - the 1989 Fiesta bowl win over WVU, and the 1977 Arkansas team's Orange Bowl win over Oklahoma helped ND win the NC

15. Angelo Bertelli?

16. Guess: d. 31. Considering just the USC winners alone there should be six to eight, plus you throw in the recent Miami (Testaverde, more?), Michigan (2), Ohio State (George), and Florida State (Ward) winners, there must be a lot.

18. Homage to '70's roller derby

19. Bertelli, Lujack, Blanchard, ...

5) True! That's the only one I had a guess on...

No answers to the questions, but in question 17 there's a grammatical error:
...the Irish played a game against a team who's head coach...

Should read:
...the Irish played a game against a team whose head coach...

/ND '96 English Major

5. I was going to guess that this was a trick question, since Gipp also played baseball while at ND. But didn't he die during the football season?

12. I think I just read this. Was it Levens?

13. In addition to the ones listed above, didn't Holtz have an Arkansas team upset Alabama/Texas/someone, giving ND a National Championship?

14. "The Phantom" left inspirational messages in the players' lockers. I believe that was while Ara was coach, but I'm not sure.

18. I bet it was for the same reason that Niele Ivey wore a red sports bra during the women's championship season.

This is good news for the OL after this year's senior class graduates...

FYI, question #20 has been re-worded into a multiple choice question so you don't have to pluck years and numbers out of thin air.

I know that 12 is either Reggie Brooks or Rodney Culver. It definitely wasn't Dorsey Levens because he barely made the field, which led to his transfer.

I believe that 15 has to be Allen Rossum.

20 has to be 1994.

That QB question is pretty rough. Wasn't that Italian kid who started as a frosh and then transferred to IU a couple years ago on the cover once?

No. 9 ND played Navy in Ireland under Holtz(don't recall the year). ND played in Tokyo after the 1978 season.

The only one I am sure of is No.18 - Dave Huffman wore red elbow pads so his mother would know which of those large linemen was her son when she was watching the game. Recall reading that years ago.

19. My brother and I are guessing four or five. Two for Army -- Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, Blanchard and Davis. For ND, Lujack ('47 winner), Bertelli ('43) (back after the war), and Hart ('49).

15.) Paul Horning or Lattner. I'll go with Johnny Lattner.

15. Allen Rossum. My brother points out that was all they had going on during those years.

Damn straight, Matt. Those were hard times.

1. Do multiple covers count? I know Rice was on 3 times. Here's my guess: Hornung, Huarte, O'Brien, Clements, Montana, Litsch, Kiel, Rice, Mirer, Powlus, Lovecchio, Quinn

4. Ryan Harris

5. False (?)

6. Polo Grounds, Yankee Stadium, Tokyo Dome (if they played in Tokyo, it had to be here)....Comiskey(?)

9. Been covered, but darnit, the ND Club of Tokyo welcomes you all if they ever get over here again! With all the military bases here, it SHOULD be a natural for a Navy/ND matchup.

12. Watters(?)

13. 2--1988 (obvious) and 1977, where Lou's Razorbacks took out an undefeated team (Oklahoma? Don't remember) in the Orange Bowl and finished with an identical record to ND, but ND destroyed #1 Texas, so they got the title.

15. Allen Rossum--slam dunk, since we graduated the same year.

16. 19(?)

19. 4--Mr. Inside & Mr. Outside for Army, Lujack and Hart for ND. Bertelli had graduated.

20. 1994.

The game wasn't in the Tokyo Dome; it hadn't been built yet. IIRC, it was in Korakuen Stadium. In any event, it was cold, and rainy.

8 is definitely University of Chicago. 4-0 v ND. That's one of the few facts that I (UofC 99) can throw at my wife (ND 99) during football season. I have to be content with academic rankings and Nobel Prize winners for the rest of the year.

The ND/Navy game in Ireland was in 1996.

baseball stadium:
Fenway Park
Polo Grounds
Yankee Stadium
Shea Stadium
BankOne Ball Park (or whatever it's called now)
Tiger Stadium (believe it was Briggs Stadium when they played)
Ebbets Field
Old Comiskey??

Is No.3 supposed to be a trick question? Or is there a football-playing Jack Kerouac in addition to his beatnik namesake?

No trick question on #3.

As far as QBs on SI covers go, I believe Kevin McDougal graced the cover during the run up to the Florida State showdown in '93. Could be wrong, though. Just seemed like one of those picks that could sneak up on people.

A quick correction. There have only been 11 ND quarterbacks on the cover of SI. Carry on.

DJ, Gotcha. Tokyo Dome was built on the site of Korakuen Stadium, I'm guessing, since it's at Korakuen. Having seen the Colts play the Falcons there last year, Tokyo Dome does quite well as a football venue.

Correct, Nate. The Big Egg was built on the site of Korakuen Stadium (wonder where the Giants played in the interim). It seems like it is a good football venue just by watching it on TV. A lot of the stadiums Japan built for the World Cup would be good, too, like in Saitama.

My 2(or 25) cents:

4. Dan Stephenson (I'm preety sure)

12. I think this may be a trick question with Rocket Ismail being the answer. If it's not, Rodney Culver would be the most likely.

19. I don't think it's '89 or '94. 1994 would have at most 9: Burris, Bercich, Young, Flannigan, Taylor,
Ruddy, Peterson, Dawson, McBride. I'm pretty sure that Lane, Covington, and McDougal weren't drafted. Anyone know for sure?
I don't think enough players graduated off the '88 team to have 11 draft picks but I could be wrong. So I'll say 1969 when the draft was much longer.
