"Att." and "Comp." columns are reversed in the table displaying Quinn's 2005-2006 numbers.

Got it. Thanks.

Is the 3rd down run issue (30% vs 74%) due to not having TT/Schwapp in the mix in those downs? Any stats on that (at least the TT part - how many times he ran on 3rd and short type stuff) from last year or a drop in % since Schwapp has been out?

Quinn certainly has not looked as good this year as last year. As your stats show, he had four INTs this year and only 2 last year. However, I can think of 3 occasions where he has thrown directly into the hands in the defense and they dropped the ball. There are probably more thrown right to the defenders. He showed more poise under pressure last year. In the GT game epecially, there were times when he had no pressure but he looked nervous and looked like he wanted to just get rid of the ball.

Honestly Mark, I think it has to do with the fact that so far ND has faced 4 very physical defenses with big front lines. As ND gets into the easier part of the schedule, I suspect the numbers will improve.

As for Travis Thomas, so far this year he has only rushed the ball once on a 3rd down play. Against GT he rushed on 3rd and 3 and got 2 yards.

Would it be possible to see Jeff S's numbers from last year ot this year?

Part of the reason the sacks are so high is because ND has been down by double digits in the first quarter forcing more passes in obvious passing situations. The stat I can't believe is how many Quinn interceptions have led to immediate TD's. Then, on top of that when ND has turned the ball over, it has led to the other team scoring almost immediately.

Season's turnovers and results.

1. Quinn Interception for TD
2. Grimes Fumble - 4 plays later TD
3. Quinn Interception retured to 4 yd line - Field Goal 4 plays later.
4. Quinn Interception - No points off TO
5. Quinn fumble returned for TD
6. Zibby fumble - 4 plays later TD
7. Quinn Interception - returned for TD.

38 points from turnovers in 2 games!

Great work as always. I suspect that the numbers will improve significantly as we move into the less-rigorous portion of the schedule. We've played four very physical teams so far.

That said, the O-line has not played up to expectations, regardless of what the numbers say. They simply aren't opening up ANY holes in the run game, and BQ has been under far too much duress in the pocket.

I haven't gone back to analyze it, but it seemed to me that Coach Weis was moving BQ around in the pocket a bit more in the second half against MSU. Half-rolls left and right to get away from the pressure a bit seemed to really hep him buy some time to deliver the ball down field. Good idea on his part.

Here you go Anon.

2005 - 21 catches, 346 yards, 6 TDs.
2006 - 23 catches, 273 yards, 4 TDs.

I don't know how you look at the rushing statistics and the sack numbers and not conclude the offensive line has been the biggest problem on offense.

A.M.D.G.

Do you guys think the no-huddle might be something we see more of during the course of the year? It might be something to consider starting the game off with because those first quarter numbers are nothing short of abysmal.

Thanks for the Shark's numbers. The reason I asked is because there has been some discussion this week regarding his perceived dropoff from last year to this year. While I agree his level of play on the field is not as good as last year his stats would indicate that its not that far off. Since he has done neraly as well as last year with more double teams and less of an effort (perceived), I wouldn't be surprised if he blows up in the next two to three games against some weaker opponents and defenses.

If I'm not mistaken, ND did not fare well in the 1st quarter last year either. The difference as I see it, was that our D kept the game close, and then we absolutely exploded in the 2nd quarter. As I recall, the 2nd quarter was billed as "ND's quarter" for most of last season.

So looking at the rushing defense numbers this year vs. last, would you conclude that the biggest problem on defense is our linebacking corp ?

Well, Butabi, you have had the effect of making me feel better about Quinn this year. According to your rundown, even though he has been playing bad...

At least he's still scoring Touchdowns!

The Butabi Brothers hit the nail on the head. Turnovers have been absolutely KILLING US.

Can you show us turnover margin by quarter? I expect we'll see the turnover margin in the 1st is really bad for ND, and the fact that they've almost all lead to points is what has the 1st quarter scoring so out of whack.

Then, of course, because we're so far behind in the 1st quarter, it makes us very one dimensional, which really lets the defenses tee off on Quinn. Only great running teams can continue to run the ball while behind, and we're not a great running team. We're not quite as bad a running team as the stats show, but we're certainly not a great running team.

Pat,
Here is the statistic that bothers me, I posted this once, but it didn't take.

Notre Dame has had 36 penalties for 286 yards, averaging 71.5 yards over the four games. Opponents have been penalized 23 times for 198 yards and an average of 49.5.

ND is tied for 114th out of 119 Division I-A schools in most penalties.
