Woah. The Big 12 has played NINE 1-AA teams? Good God, someone needs to get a hold on this. People can talk about ND having a week schedule all they want cause we play the service academies, but at LEAST they are Division 1 teams.
This begs a good question. When WAS the last time ND played a non-D1 team? I can't think of a single one. Any takers? Brad | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 2:56 pm | #

Brad,
I don't believe that they ever have. Jeremy | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 3:02 pm | #

Never since the distinction was made. Played a few of the Ivies before, but I don't think anything since about 1960 has been against current non-majors. and most of the teams that we ever played were major when we played them, except when football was still pretty much in its infancy (pre-1920) crazy tom | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 3:02 pm | #

I think the Big Ten will also have played nine 1-AA teams by the time the season is over. It seems that many teams used their 12th game this year to schedule a cupcake. Jeff | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 3:13 pm | #

Somebody on NDNation had a list of the teams that had never played a I-AA team since the distinction was made, and it's down to eight, I think. Notre Dame, Michigan, Cal (who's about to drop off the list), USC are the only ones I can remember. Anyone else recall this? Bullfrog | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 3:42 pm | #

By the way, "begs the question" doesn't mean "begs for the question to be asked." It means that you're making a logical fallacy in an argument.

I did not know that. Brad | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 4:00 pm | #

The NCAA came instituted the 1-AA designation in 1978. Since then, only four schools have exclusively played 1-A opponents: Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Ohio State, and Michigan.
(Note this is based on a fairly quick check, so let me know if you can find an exception. I only looked at teams from BCS conferences and I counted 1-AA games on this season's schedule as well.) Jeff | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 5:20 pm | #

Well tOSU could be gone as I think I heard somewhere that they are playing Youngstown State in '08 or something like that. Anonymous | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 5:29 pm | #

Good pickup. Ohio State opens next season with Youngstown Sate. Another one bites the dust. Jeff | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 5:36 pm | #

Bullfrog-
Apparently there are two uses of the idiom "begs the question".
From thefreedictionary.com:
1. if a statement or situation begs the question, it causes you to ask a particular question.
e.g. "It's all very well talking about extra staff but it rather begs the question of how we're going to pay for them."
2. if something that someone says begs the question, it suggests that something is true which might in fact be false.
e.g. "We're assuming, are we, that Anthony will still be in charge this time next year? That rather begs the question, doesn't it?"
So both you and Brad were correct.
Ok, 'nuff grammar. Back to football... kevin | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 5:54 pm | #

But "beg to differ" actually means what it says in its simplest form, right?
Or does someone "beg to differ"? chrisnd | Email | Homepage | 09.27.06 - 8:31 pm | #
