Do we have our first offical Ted Leo reference???? and counting....

As far as Cult Heroes who died young, the Jesus bit was awesome.

Yet technically, we have three. The Gipper should never be forgotten. Heck he still holds a few ND records such as yards per rush and rushing TDs in a game.

And last, but certainly not least, we shouldn't forget the brave one.

Montana Mazurkiewicz. R.I.P.

A Nobel Prize winning alumnus anyway:

I think Fr. Nieuland won the Nobel for inventing synthetic rubber, didn't he?

Evidently, I am making stuff up. My bad.

Heh, I never thought of Snyderville as "Ritzy"

While Nieuwland did not win, he is in the Inventor's Hall of Fame which is far more prestigious. Also, alumnus, Dr. James Muller won the Peace Prize in 1985 as a founder of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.

But much more important than Nobel winners is knowing Hesburgh has over 150 honorary degrees and a Congressional Gold Medal.

No nobel prize, but the later ND vector biologist/professor Dr. George Craig was for a long time perhaps ND's most well regarded researcher.

I believe he was ND's only member of the National Science Foundation (which was quite the honor in some circles, or so I'm told . . .).

Whoops, I should have said

"was for a long time perhaps ND's most well regarded researcher . . . among active Faculty".

Seconded on the Montana add.

As far as metrosexual quarterbacks, I thought this was amusing. There's a frat here in EL that has a rock in front of their house and they're always painting it with funny slogans and such. During football season, they're mostly football related (although the occassional "You honk, we drink" will still show up).

Following the ND Comeback, the rock was painted blue with white lettering and read, "Brady Quinn Medicine Woman."

Then there was the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, of whom Fr. Hesburgh said that he'll be the ND faculty member remembered a thousand years from now.

of the top of my head i think we have two national championships in basketball. At least two helms foundation trophies 1936 and 27?

NFL Influence: Bernie Parmalee(Dolphins)

Helms titles in basketball are like pre-AP titles in football. Since the advent of the NCAA tournament, people have all but forgotten about the helms... and they should, since the NCAA basketball tourney is the best postseason play of all sports, pro and college.

Best postgame meal:

ND: Barnaby's pizza

UCLA: Sushi Roku

Consensus All-American named Walton:
ND = Shane
UCLA = Bill

Cartoon inspirations:

ND: Lucky Charms

UCLA: Thundar the Barbarians sidekick, Ookla the Mok

Loving the Umphrey's reference! One of the best things to ever come out of South Bend!

Trademark Cheer:

ND = GO IRISH

UCLA = Eight Count

Female Students:

ND = Fat

UCLA = Phat

Soo....how exactly did Hornung drop his pants at the pep rally??? What the heck happened there???

Barnaby's the failed Pizza franchise?

I can think of at least ten S.B. places that are more traditional postgame meals than Barnaby's.

Here's just the Italian one's
Bruno's
Rocco's
Macri's
Parisi's (though I, for one, am not a fan)

Though the clear number one, of course, for a true South Bend experience is Te Linebacker.

Ted Leo is all you need to know, winner. And I vote for Rocco's as postgame meal, I've never even heard of Barnaby's, but I graduated relatively recently...

Dr. James Muller was a recipient of the nobel peace prize, co-founder of the physicians for the prevention of nuclear war and a Notre Dame alumn, we also have condoleezza rice

Foreign Lanuage Constituting at least 50% of the institutional moniker:
ND: Francais
UCLA: Espanol

I think you guys are going to be great in the future, but the bend, don't break defense doesn't work in connection to you guys. You want to see real bend but don't break look at OSU's current defense. They lose nine starters and have one of the best scoring defenses in the country with an excellent turnover margin. Yours barely holds up to MSU and UCLA. UCLA?? You guys seriously need to get your offense jumpstarted sooner or you will be embarrassed again in a bowl game.

However, you could beat USC, if they somehow beat Cal and Oregon. I know your happy because you are winning and have regained some of your swagger, but there is a point when you have to face reality. As Robert Smith of ESPNEWS pointed out, you guys have the same people playing secondary that were there last year and were embarrassed by the Buckeyes. The improvement has not occurred. The defense will collapse again, and Quinn has great potential, but if you put any amount of pressure, any amount, he gets happy feet and looks terrible. It's that simple. How can you defend almost losing to UCLA or MSU? MSU had to work their but off to beat 2-6, 2-6?!!! Northwestern???!!!?? Just like last season you have hardly any ranked opponents that you barely beat, excluding Georgia Tech, who just got killed by Celmson? Then there is USC who doesn't look so hot.

In all fairness though SIoncampus had an interesting rumor up mentioning how many expect Jimmy Clausen to start next year, but Jones has something to say about that, in Jones in the mold of a Troy Smith? OSU has experience in this area, we had Zwick who was supposed to be great and then was passed by Smith. I think that would be a great development at Notre Dame a dual-threat qb a la Vince Young or Smith. Look what it did for PSU, I believe this is the future of the game and more traditional schools such as Notre Dame and Michigan are becoming stale staying with pocket passers.

No insult to Quinn, but can you imagine Weiss with a Young like character.

Bob,

No I can't. Look what he did with Tom Brady, pocket passer extraordinnaire. Give me a pocket passer and an o-line that doesn't let defensive tackles run right by them and I'll give you a good offense.

yes, i remember those halcyon days strolling through that lush, verdant, exquisitely coiffed roseland. ahhh the memories!

couple of answers here-

barnaby's has been around for decades.. one in howard park (east of downtown) and one on the corner of edison and grape.. fantastic place.

jones is more like mcnabb with speed than vince young or troy smith.. (or a slightly slower vince young with a very good arm). weis must be salivating to invent plays for this kid.

How long was James Dean enrolled at UCLA? Two weeks? I don't think they get to claim him.

Love the Blue Gray Sky, and thanks to all you folks who write the page and even the comments from the readers. We can all use a chuckle in our day.
But speaking of funny, I get a kick out guys like Bob above, and all the Mark Mays of the world on TV, informing all us ND people of how many deficiencies this team has, and how many improvements we need to make, and they're talking about by the and of THIS SEASON!
Are you kidding, Bub? (That was not a mispelling, but a small note of sarcasm; if not for Bob, then at least for Mark May.) Most ND fans realize the giant hole in our recruiting left by the previous two regimes. We might have a chance to have a team like OSU or Mich, by 2008 or 2009. Those schools also didn't have a couple of presidents like Hesburgh and Malloy who did everything they could to destroy the football program for 55 years. To his credit, Charlie is working like a dog at this job and refuses to make excuses (the rhyme was not deliberate but I guess I'll leave it). Last year he had half as much talent as Michigan and beat them, and 1/3 as much as SoCal and almost pulled that off! So keep up the good, Charlie!

Barnaby's - for those times when Chuck E. Cheese is too crowded.

The argument begins and ends at Rocco's.

Great post, Jay.

My grandfather was part of the 1927 Helms Foundation B-ball championship team. I don't think he would have agreed that it should be forgotten. It was, at the time, a recognized way of awarding a championship title.
