Anyone know if there is any place to find Weis' "60 minutes" segment? Yahoo has some outtakes but I was looking for the whole thing. (I checked YouTube - nothing there).

Go to the CBS.com website. Then clic on the 60 minutes link. There are some clips there.

In one of the 60 minutes clips, Charlie and his family are dining while Charlie talks to a recruit. Is that on campus? or is it a restaurant in town? I'm very familiar with South Bend, and N.D. of course, but I don't recognize that place.

Any ideas?

One of the rooms looked kind of like the small meeting room off of Reckers. It could possibly be there.

Andy: Looked like the Morris Inn to me.

Here's the Weis link - http://60minutes.yahoo.com/segme...13/ charlie_weis

I took a look at coach's house and I'm thinking it's time I quit what I'm doing.

The way Weis works--I'm sure he doesn't see his house much anyway

nor his feet, Frank.

Or his.....oh crap, i'm not going there-definitely below the belt shot....despite being gravity-challenged, I don't think any of us would trade him as our coach

He is rather glorious. I'm honestly concerned that he's going to die of a massive heart attack. Northwestern losing their coach last year makes me all the more worried.

brown + richardson = excellent pass rush for 3 more years

I love Weis...but in all fairness, I think it's Brady that deserves more praise for the team still only having one loss.

No doubt. BQ has been solid recently. It's going to be a struggle next year with a young qb and not a lot of veterans to help out.

Yeah, Brady has thrown like like 14 TDs since his last pick. I hope he runs that up to about 40 by seasons end.

Is there a way to save Matt Cashore's photos onto your computer if you have a Mac?

Watched the clips and watched 60 min. Honesty, often mistaken for calous, mean and intimidating yet it is the essence of all great relationships and the the basis of trust and respect. Not just being a homer, but I find it hard to believe that some people see this for ssomething else. He reminds me of some of my best teachers and coaches. Mo Aronson, great teacher and coach, the man didn't bullshit around. It wasn't always pleasant but you got the point and you'd walk through fire if he told you. Couldn't have picked a better coach at ND.

The best coaches are always butt kickers. No one respects you unless you are, but Weis can back it up with four rings.

Remember the perfect SAT score thing? Any truth to that or you think it's bullshit? I went to high school with a kid who answered every question right. He was one of those people who is so intelligent it's difficult to converse with them because they're thinking on another level. Charlie strikes me as being very bright, but I don't know. I wish I was smart. I also wish I had a massive interlocking "ND" in my non-existant in ground pool...

ND's website has a coach's tape perspective along w/ Weis recap:

http://und.cstv.com/sports/m-foo...ootbl- body.html

it's worth a watch

It could very well be true that he got a perfect score on the SAT. I got a 1560 and I don't think I'm overly intelligent. It's more about reasoning and elimination than anything else... something I could see Charlie being darn good at.

Chris,

Ez four ewe too say.

time to wake up the echoes of the notre dame nation on this vote...

Hey Domer Dan - I had Mo Aronson too, but as a sub. He was like 85 years old and used two canes to walk...but he could still kick everyone's ass if he wanted to.

I would agree with Chris. My cousin scored a 1580 and I don't think I would classify him as that much smarter than myself, and I scored around ~1300 or something like that. That being said, I know a lot of people who scored much less that I did who I would consider to be much smarter than I am.

Some people are just good test takers. I could have no clue what a test was even about and I think I could get a pretty decent grade on it, especially if its something like the LSATs where you can use multiple elimination to get an answer.

All this being said, I wouldn't be too suprised if Weis had a perfect score. It happens.

Back on the subject of Brady Quinn, I think people who complain that he doesn't throw the deep ball should remember that TD/INT ratio. Or is it an SAT analogy? Anyway, this year ND looks alot like the two NFL teams I follow most closely - the colts and the pats. Pick you apart with the play action and short passes, take the odd long shot or trick play to burn you when you are cheating. None of these teams are 'big play' teams, and none has a truly franchise RB. TEs factor large in the passing game because it's all about finding the seam in coverage. This type of football works when you have good but not necessarily great receivers, tight ends, and RBs who block well and have great hands.

Watching the Navy game, and comparing it to the games Manning and Brady had last weekend, I think this is very seriously a modern pro offense. Quinn has a lot of responsibility for sight adjusts at the line, and success means him making good decisions on every play and everyone executing their assignments.

Looking back now, I'm starting to think there is more upside to this offense than I let myself believe at the beginning of the year. Quinn is looking more and more confident in the system every game, and our receiving corps has shaken off their serious early rust. Maybe there wasn't enough emphasis on basics like route running early - I don't know, but things look much tighter now, and I don't think it's the level of competition. If you recall, there were many dropped balls and mismatched routes/throws early and this seems to be clearing up. Also, Carlson's emergence is really what makes this offense a threat. We just need Darius to hit the gaps hard and for our secondary to start wrapping up and doing the other little things in order to get to the next level.

Watching Quinn's development, I think there are a lot of parallels to Manning. Peyton has always been good, but this year he looks posed to be dominant. This system is one that places an enormous weight on the shoulders of the QB for good decision making and audibles, as well as obviously great execution. This took time for Manning to develop to the point where he wasn't sometimes tricked by disguised coverages, or rattled by pressure when he's in the pocket trying to do his progressions. Quinn has faced the same problems, but when things start clicking, look out. It really impressed me that he looked so comfortable throwing on the run in that final series against UCLA, and as he gets more comfortable in all his technical duties as a QB, he will begin to be more and more of a threat to improvise and flat out play. In my mind there's no doubt he is the top NFL prospect at QB.

All this leads me to believe Clausen is the perfect prospect for ND, regardless of whether he starts right away. There will be a learning curve, but with great TE prospect Ragone and some of the possible receivers we have coming in the future looks bright.

Let's hope this stretch of games gives the OL a chance to get it's protection together and our WRs to tighten up their coordination with Quinn. Then we'll rock some bells come bowl time.

Great points iNDy. Brady (Tom) was f*cking SICK last night. 10 different receivers, 357, 4 TDs, WOW! Distributing the ball around was always the hallmark of the Pats under CW and why they never had that star receiver. One game it's Branch, then it's Patton, then it's Givens. I'd much rather have something like this than a di*khead like TO. I'd like to see ND get more guys in the mix. Seeing Grimes emerge is nice for not only the rest of the this year, but next year as well. I always like to see at least 10 catches by or RBs and TEs. Last week was 8. We'll need that number above 10 (12-15 would be ideal) to beat the Condoms.

I'm going to predict that Demetrius Jones ends up being the starter next year.

But hey, what do I know: based on the SAT scores thrown out here, I'm the dumba$$ of the group: 1130 on my first try, 1100 on my second. Luckily, I was a left-handed pitcher and had just enough talent to convince former Irish baseball coach Pat Murphy I at least had potential. He found out during my freshman year the reality- I wasn't very good. Oh, well; at least I got in.

What is a "subway fan"?

Domer Dan

Do you like it the ass, as well? How you can characterize the way CW treated BP in that segment as tough love puzzles me.

During that segment: you have the starting QB concuring (on national television) that his HC is a jerk!

Then, the OL/assistant HC dosen't deem it necessary ( I suppose for lack of respect) to answer CW's question during a critical game situation. Is it any wonder why our O/L is underachieving?

And, the way CW talks to the Refs. during the game is anyone really surprised that we continue to get calls going against us? Hey! If I was a Ref. I'd stick it his [CW's] ass every chance I got, too.

I'm begining to understand why Parcells and Belicheck(sp) would not let CW talk to the press! He supplies the opposing teams with great bulletin board material on a regular basis and continues to show a level of immaturity that is befuddling, given his supposed intelligence.

Twogun,

You may well have some solid pts. but remember the alternative under Ty. Nothing but a stare. Zero emotion. At least he is fighting for his players.

On a siden ote, anybody check out Mandel's new p[ower rankings?

Cal jumped 4, yes 4, spots for watching TV Staurday.

Louisville jumps 2 for being bye and having such an impressive game against Syracuse the week before

And we moved up one to #11. Hooray!

Twogun,

One of the dumbest posts ever. None of Parcells' assistants (includng Belicheck)could talk to the media, just like none of Belicheck's could. Charlie's cocky demeanor is great for ND. Also, the bulletin board material is thrown out the window after the first play, if you need that to get you up, you arent going to be very good anyway. And If Brady thinks Charlie is a jerk sometimes, so be it...see if he thinks the same on Draft day when he gets 50 Million thanks directly to CW. And for good measure, something tells me that is not the reason why the O-line has been bad. Please be sure if one of CW's asst. werent showing him respect, they would be out the door before they knew what hit them. God I love CW and the 60 minutes segment just reinforced that, he is exactly what this program needs.

Don, a subway ND fan is someone who did not attend ND, but roots for the team because they are of good Irish stock, or Catholic, or a fan of clean, well run college football team. Or all three. Perhaps someone can tell us where the term comes from - I think it has something to do with the fact that these fans turn out during Irish 'away' games in their home cities, but not too many US cities have subways, so maybe it has something to do with NY Irish history.

Rat, you are right. This seems to be how teams like the Colts and Pats have decided to build consistent winners in the modern era - don't pay big money for free agents, build with good late round picks around a great QB and make up for the lack of super talent by ruthlessly distributing the ball and exploiting coverages. Expect Quinn to be way ahead of the curve should he go to a team with this mentality. Hopefully Miami will lose lots of games and he won't have to be exiled to Oakland or Detroit and their dysfunctional franchises (no disrespect intended - the fans are great, but your owners are not).

twogun, if you don't get CW you probably never will. Some of us understand why dressing somebody down is a form of respect and affection. Perhaps this is why ND has such a strong relationship with the service academies. This is an attitude that is old school, and not everyone gets it.

In my opinion, when someone in a position of power is sweet talking, they are pimping. Unfortunately there seems to be way too much of that in our society these days, and I couldn't be happier Charlie Weis is coaching at Notre Dame. (ok, maybe if the Texas Tech Basketball team had beaten Texas, that would have been close!)

Twogun -

Great attitude there, buddy. Insinuate that anyone who disagrees with you is gay...real mature. On to the debunking of your points:

Do you remember a coach by the name of Lou Holtz? Lou used to give the refs an earful, too...even choked a ref on time, to demonstrate what he thought was a penalty committed by the other team. And yet, off the field, Lou was as deferential as could be, always insisting that any opponent (no matter how bad) could beat ND and that some of them were nearly invincible.

Ever seen video of other college coaches talking to refs? What about NFL coaches? In my experience, those usually aren't calm, rational discussions about differences of opinion. Many coaches yell at refs, and use exactly the same language that Charlie Weis does. Don't try to make Charlie out to be some boorish idiot just because he uses a few choice words with the refs.

Regarding the relationship between BQ and CW...did you read the long ESPN the Magazine article about the two of them at the beginning of the season? BQ credits CW for kicking his ass and making him into a better player. If you think that BQ resents Charlie, you're kidding yourself.

I belive the term "Subway Alumni" stemmed from all the NY Irish and/or Catholics going to watch the old ND Army games and getting there via subways.

PM has it right -- subway alums took the subways to the Polo Grounds in NYC to see the Irish play.

Smitty, great post. Twogun's a moron.

Every, and I mean EVERY successful coach has that side to him where he's just a nasty SOB and will be CLEAR in getting is point across. Just think about excellence in some of today's coaches:

Belicheck- ass kicker
Cower- ass kicker
Parcells- ass kicker
Pat Riley- ass kicker
Tony LaRussa- ass kicker
Ozzie Guillen- ass kicker

Now there may be some guys who look like softies, but are still ass kickers. For instance, Coach K may seem like a really nice guy, but I've seen some clips of him getting hornery. There may be guys like Poodle with his rah rah or Phil Jackson with his Zen that can get results without being a-holes (though my money is that these guys have done it to; it's just NEVER in public).

At the end of the day, in sports, you need a coach/manager who isn't afraid to kick a little ass once in awhile. Otherwise, you end up like Dusty Baker and the Cubs- LOSERS! I'm a Cub fan and I'm stoked they got Piniella. If anyone can turn around that sad sack franchise, he can.

Anyone else cringing at the thought of BQ working for Art Shell next year?

On the discussion of coaches who often seem to be jackasses, here is a good example I saw because the guy coached at my alma mater.

A guy by the name of Bobby Knight.

Want to see an asshole? Take a look. Now while I personally thought the guy was great, many thought he was way too out of line. Yet there is one thing no one can deny, and that is that the man is one hell of a coach.

Bobby won multiple national championships at IU with what many people at the time considered to be a relatively untalented team. Multiple championships, the last undefeated team in NCAA basketball history, and in the entire time he was at IU only TWO of his players failed to graduate (one was Isaiah Thomas who went pro, but later received his degree).

My only real point is that you do not have to agree with a coaches demeanor for him to be a good coach. They are coaches, not PR guys. Their job is to win games and graduate players. If they need to be a "jerk" then so be it. It quite often takes some measure of fear of a coach in order to properly instill discipline needed for optimal performance and success. Look at drill sergeants. Anyone coming out of basic will tell you they hated their sergeants, but if they live through a war they will tell you differently because everything they get put through is for their own damn good.

Would you rather have a nice-guy-good-time-buddy coach like Pete Carroll who is pals with all his players? They have had success, yes. But that team lacks any semblance of discipline. The players do not fear the wrath of their coach, and so feel fine to punch students, sell X, rape students, and receive $800k houses from gangsters. Which coach would you rather have?

Thank you Brad, Domer '99, and Irish Rat. Charlie can be a jerk. So what? Do his players respect him? Do his assistants respect him? They certainly seem to. Coaches scream at refs, players, and yes, even other coaches, all the time. I've even seen happy-go-lucky Poodle yell at a ref from time to time during a game. So Charlie says the f-word to them? Gasp! Football (sports in general) is (are) the ultimate meritocracy. Charlie is respected because he makes the people that work and play for him better. If he has to kick their butt a little for that to happen, they end up appreciating it in the end.

What is the world coming to when it can be (sincerely?) suggested that a football coach is too much of a hard ass? I mean we're not talking Jackie Sherrill here. There have been no public castrations on Cartier Field. Anything short of mutilating an animal, and I don't want to hear about a football coach being too nasty.

Subway Alumni

Hey Twogun, do you know anything about context? It's obvious to me that you've never played much football. As a former player and currently a coach, when BQ referred to CW as a jerk sometimes this can be viewed as a term of endearment. Football is different from any sport out there. Many hippies referred to it as a parallel for the military about land aquisition. To a point they were right. Just like the military the head coach is the general who is responsible for the welfare of the whole unit and if for the beterment of the team a few soldiers are dressed down then so be it. Football isn't for wimps, it teaches you to overcome adversity by using the best of all of your abilities. If CW chews some ass to get results so be it. The nature of football hasn't changed much in 100 years, strategies have but it's still about strapping it on and busting the guy across from you in the mouth harder than he blasts you.
As for taking it in the ass...sorry I'm not your type;)

Beeeyaatch!

twogun, can you feel the love? It may be a little hard on your feelings now to hear these things, but in a few years you'll look back on this experience and realize it made you a better person. Hang in there guy. Everybody cries, sometimes.

iNDy, I'm just like Charlie. I don't care what any of you stupid mutherf'ing, co'sucking blah blah blah bastards think! :)

Is that really the best you could come back with, twogun?

very good twogun.

Twogun,

What's up little man?
