Off topic, but I was looking at BGS's first posts, and that was around the time of the coaching search. I found this post and you had Charlie as a C if hired. Isn't it funny how things change? Reading your blog is like reading a book. Seriously, I love looking back at your posts. It is by far the best ND football blog around. By the way, can you tell me how many posts you've done in it? Here's the link to the post: http://bluegraysky.blogspot.com/ ...230486263076009

who the hell does this guy think he is? why is he bashing us... you don't see notre dame players taking shots at LSU. He has no right to say that we do not belong where we are until after the sugar bowl

Yeah, that's cute, come back and talk to us when you've got 11 Nat. Champs./7 Heismans/thousands of fans in every city and various countries etc. etc.

Seriously. Every year, the same thing. There are simply people out there who do not accept that Notre Dame really is a pretty good team, always has been a pretty good team, if not a great team, and always will be a pretty good team, if not a great team. Yeah, we falter here and there, but let's be realistic: we've had so very many years where we've been excellent that it only fits that there's the occasional misstep here and there. But even with the missteps, we're still one of the best college football teams, year in and year out, and that's how it's going to be. And no matter how long LSU plays football, and no matter how much glory they accumulate in that time, it will never match the Notre Dame luster, they will never match our history, and they will never match the love that Notre Dame has.

If that doesnt make you nasty, what does? Where is Chris Zorich when you need him. Damn, I would love to see some of that nastiness that Charlie promised when he was hired. This pisses me off and I am just a subway alumnus. I dont think we have any nasty players other than Zibby, it is time to kick some big-mouth ass....

Who is Chase Pittman anyway?

Media darlings? Who's he referring to -- Beano Cook?

Keep them quotes comin' Tigers. Just more fodder for the ND Bulletin boards and more incentive for the Irish!

Maybe we're media darlings traditionally, but has he watched or read ANY national coverage since Dec. 3? LSU's getting more love than T. Smith was leading up to the Heisman ceremony. If nothing else, witness LSU's victory yesterday in the Sportscenter Championship Series!
Any one of our players could say the exact same thing about LSU, just without the word "always."

Sean. I just read the old blog about prospective head coaches. Not only did Sean at BGS have Charlie rated as a the only "C" candidate in consideration, but a "C" was the lowest grade handed out. I agree. The old BGS blogs are classic.

"C" probably just meant "Charlie".

or "Cocky"

Who is Chase Pittman, you ask? How about this? http://www.fanblogs.com/lsu/005285.php

Other than USC, LSU was my # 2 most-hated team while I was at du Lac. I can still hear "goe duh hale, noder dime, goe duh hale" incessantly raining down on our guys on a horrific Saturday night, in the Deep South.

CP sounds, well, pretty average as far as what I recall. Hopefully we'll stay out of the bars after the game.

Funny how "night games, in the South" don't connect with some fans. It's a part of our "regional reality," or "on-the-road" experience. They're tough on any team down there; brutal on the Irish. From what I've seen over a few years, night games in Dixie are the toughest.

On the other hand, here's hoping that
Mr. Pittman's quote ultimately has the same effectiveness as that of the legendary Veno Paraskevas.

Go Irish

The LSU cheer reminds me of what the Bama fans were yelling along Bourbon Street before the '74 Sugar Bowl...picture beer bellied southern fried porkers, yelling "Row Todd Row" all night and until the game ended.

Well, I just arranged to get a couple tickets from a classmate and will be able to watch this spectacle in person. I'm bringing a box of Kleenex because I expect we're going to get out asses kicked. Man, I just hope we can stay with them and have a good game for the TV audience

Did you read the comments by Gerry DiNardo, that perrenial loser? I can't believe his bitter diatribe. And to what purpose? ND was pretty good to him, even wanted to interview him when Davie was let go. But he declined because he was going through a bitter divorce.

Looks like the ex-wife got the balls in the divorce, Gerry

I think the only appropriate response, besides whoopin up on him in the Sugar Bowl, comes from the mouth of Kobe Bryant, when he dismissed the cooments that Raja Bell gave to him during the playoffs.

"Does he know me? Do I know this guy? I don't know this guy. I might have said one word to this guy. I don't know this kid ... I don't need to know this kid. I don't want to... Maybe he wasn't hugged enough as a kid."

Keep in mind, until Ty was fired, there weren't a whole hell of a lot of people who even knew Charlie's name. And Belichick keeps a muzzle on his assistant coaches (and to some extent, players). The post-hiring press conference was the first time anyone actually got any idea of who it was we had just hired, and between the day he was hired and that press conference, I think a lot of people were unimpressed with the hire. Then he started talking, and people listened, and thought "this is the guy". And, it didn't hurt that once he was hired, all the sportswriters started interviewing all the opposing NFL players/coaches and propped him up as an "offensive genius".

Judge60-

Kleenex? Im thinking you need another sanitary device...check your diaper. I think you just wet yourself.

Veno Paraskevas was a Purdue linebacker who said similar stuff prior to the Purdue ND football game in 1970. 48-0 ND I believe

Being of that era LSU was probably my second most hated team after USC as well. A sportswriter of the LSU student newspaper prior to playing ND, [I think the 71 game] wrote words to the effect that.".. If Notre Dame were playing Russia I'd be out there waving the old hammer and sickle."

Right now it would be Georgia Tech LSU and Michigan. GT because of debris throwing during Parseghian and Devine eras.

A team I use to dislike but now like is Nebraska ,ironically beginning from the 1973 Orange Bowl blowout. Being that it was Bob Devaney 's last game he could have made it much worse.

Subsequently I have found Nebraska fans like us ,support their team rather than spending time hating other teams.

As a sidelight, in the Spirit of Christmas it would be interesting to get thoughts on opponents who have gained redemption in your eyes.

I also concur that this is by far my favorite ND blog.

I don't know why anyone here would be upset by this quote. It is probably the best thing we could hope for. Somehow, this team needs to get up for this damn game, and come out and hit LSU right in the mouth. It'd be nice to see.

gwzimm,

Just read Di Nardo's comments and I was sturified by his comments. It's apparent he works for ESPN. He must have drank the Kool-Aid just like Aaron Taylor. Maybe he made his comments about Ty because he got similar treatment from LSU. Looking at it all I don't put much stock in his credibility since his career as a coach is very similar to Davieham's.
I.U. let him go after 3 years! This proves the old axiom that good players don't necessarily make good coaches...or good analysts for that matter.

Stupified by his comments...
whoops

Dana Payne, you're wrong about Nebraska. These gap-toothed Herbies here hate ND the way Miami hates us.

Drive-time radio during football season produces a weekly dementia fest about "Just who does Notre Dame play?", "Just who has Notre Dame beaten?", "ND is over-rated", "ND gets all the breaks", "ND doesn't deserve to be where they are", and on and on.

The World's Greatest Fans are vicious. Ask my kids, ask my wife, and ask me. It isn't only jealousy, or envy, it's genuine hatred. I can't remember all the times I'm sitting having a pleasant conversation with someone, I tell them I'm an ND grad, and they go into their "I hate Notre Dame" rant. It's because they hate Notre Dame. Just ask them.

Nebraska has degenerated into a program of transients. Their heir-apparent quarterback for next year transferred from Arizona State and will leave after the year. The program is littered with Juco transfers.

Please don't celebrate the World's Greatest Fans; they do that enough themselves.

Any game of student-athletes v. very athletic part-time students is a big problem. Witness tOSU and the U of $emi-pro Collegian$.

The bowl losing streak is just a reflection that super-athletes have gone elsewhere for that time. Also, it says we were invited to bowl games because of our TV draw and following. In short, we have been overmatched in top tier games v. superior personnel for a long time.

Yes, we can (italics) win the LSU Homer game, only if a lot of things happen.

1) OL shows up
2) WR's don't drop gimme's
3) D gets some t-overs.
4) STeams show up.
5) We play at a top-10 level for 60 min.

Since none of those things happened, except for the PSU game, I don't expect to win. Sorry.

If Minter goes and we get a new (aggressive DC's only, PLEASE!) DC by the spring, that will mark the turning point under CW.

i have no problem with ND. I love when Michigan beats them and hate when UM loses to them. I respect ND and Charlie Weis. However, I just feel like that anytime ND has played anyone with a pulse(no not PSU or UCLA-which ND struggled with) they get taken behind the woodshed and get beatdown. And the reason people feel like ND is a media darling is because they were on every preseason magazine and the Sporting News had Quinn walking on water. So good luck with LSU, but I just don't see you guys winning.
With respect,

It's all good, Wolverine. But instead of worrying about ND's troubles in the Big Easy, perhaps you should be thinking about what Michigan is up against. UM and USC are both bitter about not playing in something more meaningful than the championship game. If UM loses, they'll have absolutely nothing to show for this season. No conference championship, no bowl win (you also have something of a bowl losing streak), nothing. No Wolverine can make the case that they show up for the big game when ND doesn't if they lose the Rose Bowl.

SoCal is also feeling pressure to win. If they lose they've got a Rose Bowl monkey on their back to the tune of three losses in a row. Think Carroll is the type to sit back and let that happen?

I don't see the better team winning here, but the worse team losing after failing to properly deal with the let-down of getting a consolation bowl.

With all due respect (and I did say 'all due respect'),

I cannot for the life of me understand the diatribe that is spewed by fans of other teams because ND got a little bit of press this year in the pre-season. There are certain programs that it is good for college football to be competetive every year. When those teams arent then college football loses its feel and appeal. Notre Dame, Penn St, USC, Michigan, Ohio St, Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Miami and Florida St, I would add in there, when those teams are down in any combination then for some reason college football doesnt seem right. When they are up and playing well and competing against one another in bowl games or regular season then all is right with college football. As a ND fan, and also a fan of college football, I love seeing the "traditional" powers get back and dominate again. Maybe all these other schools can see what is going to happen with ND now that there is a coach there who loves the school, wants it back in its rightful place among the powers that be, and is out recruiting some of the best players in the country. All of you had your shots at ND in the recent past, enjoy them now, for they are not going to last much longer.

Michigan does have to worry about USC, I'll give you that Joe. Trust me, I have been thinking about them since the pairing was announced. Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith especially worry me if the pass rush is weak (which I doubt will happen) against Booty.

Not to hijack the thread, but Harrison Smith committed to the Irish yesterday. Suck it, Fulmer.

Chase Pittman... a supermarket of some sort? Does anyone else picture every LSU practice as being something out of "The Waterboy"?

Merry Christmas to all... and to all a good night.

CC Angel...

Thanks for the imput...as far as people criticising my alma mater that goes with the territory. A rather distinguished looking Washington and Lee guy went off on me when our lacrosse club {then } played down there 30 odd years ago. Examples abound.
To one Wolverine Grad who did the same, I equated his criticism to those overseas who hate/and or jealous of the USA. That shut him up.

Didn't realize such schools as Nicholls, Troy State and others were so lionized by the Husker faithful. {regarding " who does ND Play?"}

Nebraska? NEBRASKA? Come on, go beat up your girl friend

We're not even going to do LSU the courtesy of sticking it halfway in. We're going balls deep.

Yo, Andrew:

Show some class and keep it clean, bro. Kids read this site.

what did Dinardo say re: ND?

typical "ND has sold its soul for football glory" comment.

Hey Jay, let's get that Andrew comment off the blog. We don't need that kind of crap on a respectable site.

F-ck LSU. What a bunch of thugs. These kids are morons. Have you heard them in interviews? They sound like uneducated simpletons, which they obviously are.

i need to start using the word "sturified" more

Fred,
I thought you were trying to say "stir fried"

Doesn't sturifying have something to do with Turducken? Cause I love me some Turducken with a deep fried Twinkie and a cold Genesee. Did I say Genesee? I meant Guinness, and I'll be bringing it in my carpet bag so git ready fer some northern aggression bubby.

Hey, watch the anti-southern comments there indy. Some of us who grew up south of the Mason-Dixon line do root for the Irish =)

And you haven't lived until you've had a deep fried twinkie.

Steve G,

Respectfulness noted and point well stated.
But I've got this to say: You know when you watch a team so much that you can start to predict how things are going to play out -- sometimes in ways that defy all reason?

I've got this feeling about the LSU game. It just feels like we've been here before with the Irish - most recently in 1986 and again in 1990. They're on the cusp of breaking out, and winning these types of games is how it's done.

Preseason, I KNEW we would get our asses handed to us by your maizes and blues. I've got the same feeling about the LSU game, only this time it works out for the Irish.

Hal

Domers,

Dream on. LSU 34, ND 17.

How you guys can rip Denardo (sic?) and not Rip Granny Holtz is beyond me? Holtz has to be the worst guy ever on ESPN - EVER

I feel ya JohnWA. I didn't mean to rip on the southland, but when I started thinking about Turducken it all just came pouring out. Apologies to our southern brothers and sisters. Seriously though, Trans fats are keeping the people down. That stuff is really not good for you!
