Yep. My young cousin and his friend went to ND on a recruiting visit (the friend is being recruited), and they couldn't really understand why Charlie was bragging about his new house. I guess it was just his roundabout way of saying he's going to be there for a while, and not to worry about him taking another job. Jay | Email | Homepage | 12.28.06 - 4:07 pm | #

I don't think he's leaving this year, or in the next couple, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he left after winning a NC someday. Especially for the Giants, since he's from NJ and the Giants were where his whole career started.
Also, I could be wrong about this, but I believe his contract has an out clause for the Giants. If I'm right, he could take that job w/o a buyout, or at least not a very large buyout. But I don't think he'd take the job this year. Lou | Email | Homepage | 12.28.06 - 5:06 pm | #

I would be very very surprised if Weis left ND before he has guided ND back to a National Championship win.
I just don't think its in his personality to quit before a job is done. atepesm | Email | Homepage | 12.28.06 - 6:19 pm | #

We've seen, read, and heard enough of the guy to know that he'd feel like a hypocrite were he to leave ND at this particuar time. Besides, the NYG job is available every 2-3-4 years.

With tuition increasing the way it is at ND, he'd be a fool to leave the school's employment before Charlie Jr. graduates.

I agree. Weis will stay. He will do so because of his family. Dude, if you're an NFL coach, you don't have a family for six months out of the year, except for those big ugly guys you see in the locker room every day. It seems to me like Charlie's daughter and son are very important to him and I can't imagine him leaving while they're still at home. Qohelet | Email | Homepage | 12.28.06 - 11:12 pm | #

We have to remember one thing
His family
They love it in South Bend b/c they see CW more. Also one of Charlies priorities is his foundation started for his daughter Hannah. He would never get the publicity for Hannah and Friends that he gets at ND at any other location pro or college. Paul S | Email | Homepage | 12.29.06 - 4:03 am | #

I really wonder why someone would jump from a high-profile college coaching position to the NFL. Recent history would show that, although it may seem like the ultimate career move, it ends up being a death knell.
Spurrier, Davis (Butch), Saban (life-support).
Why do you think these guys who were great college coaches are/will be back coaching 18-22 year olds?
What is the big deal about being a Professional Football Coach? C'mon, the NFL is boring in comparison to the NCAA. It's not called the No Fun League for nothing! Plus, you don't have as many "distractions" (eg. Tank Johnson, et. al.) or at least, you shouldn't, coaching kids.
At a college, these guys are treated like kings if they do well. Look at what Saban traded away to go to Miami. He may be headed to Tuscaloosa now to get back to it!
I just don't get it. It just seems like a better job to me than the NFL.
Who are the coaches that have gone from being a good/great college coach to being a good/great NFL coach? Not to say Charlie doesn't have it in him (I'm sure he does). But, is there really more prestige in being the NY Giants' coach as opposed to being the coach of the Fightin' Irish? Big Tobacco | Email | Homepage | 12.29.06 - 9:05 am | #

quality family time? Isn't he always out recruiting?
About that big house, it makes a nice statement, but if you have money, you build a house as an investment.
I don't think he'll leave soon, his ego wouldn't let him. But some of the reasons given here seem a bit naive. Eric Wilson | Email | Homepage | 12.29.06 - 9:53 am | #

With free agency to deal with in the NFL and a salary cap you basically have to start over every 4 years or so anyway. Why not deal with kids who WANT to be at ND instead of somebody who just wants the bigger $$$ from whatever team is willing to pay him? knoxvilleirish | Email | Homepage | 12.29.06 - 10:04 am | #

Eric-
Believe me, the house he built was not for investment purposes as I don't think there are too many buyers in the greater South Bend area looking for a property like Weis'. A baseball diamond, a riding area, swimming pool- he did those things for his kids and family not for the resale value. The house he was living in before (Davie's old house) was fine and if he had aspirations to move to the pros he would've likely stayed there for a few years. He wouldn't build the kind of property he did. PM | Email | Homepage | 12.29.06 - 10:04 am | #

Eric,
I remember when Weis was first hired, he made a bunch of statements that made light of the fact that people were amazed at his work ethic. To paraphrase his comments: "If you think this is hard work, you know nothing about the hours coaches log in the NFL." (Don't mean to talk without sourcing this; I went looking for an article with the actual quote and came up empty.)
The reason I bring it up is because Weis genuinely sees a quality of life difference between the NFL and college, and he's said dozens of times that his decision to take the ND job was driven in no small part by family issues.

Hal,
Agreed.
If Weis leaves ND after all he's said about the place, he's a dirtbag and no one will ever be able to take him at his word again.
That said, I don't think he's one of those guys. I believe him.
Hope I'm not a fool for doing so.

I hate to say it but I think Charlie is gone. As was said in this site a couple of days ago; if Charlie issues non-denials we should be worried. The Fort Wayne paper reported that when asked abou the Giant's job, Charlie said "I don't want to talk about that now." It takes less time to say "I'm not interested in the Giant job".
White should start looking for a replacement immediately. Brian | Email | Homepage | 12.29.06 - 8:39 pm | #

I will lose all faith in everything that is good and decent if CW goes to the Giants. He has unfinished business to take care of in South Bend. Fortunately, I don't see him taking the job. Christ, the media has way too much clout over college sports! A couple of stupid-ass, ill-conceived, poorly written, wet dream articles by Giants fans with blue balls, and here we are, seriously discussing and fretting over Weis leaving. "I heard he's talking to them", "He's working out the deal", "He already bought a house in NJ"--For the love of God, pull yourselves together! He's staying. Don't give these dumbass writers any credence by running when they cry wolf. Pay attention to the facts and believe in our coach, who is a good man of his word. Weis has told reporters he ain't going anywhere anytime soon. From the NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/0...dpc&
oref=slogin
"I can only say it so many times,” said Weis, a former Giants and New England assistant now in his second year at Notre Dame. “Every coach is perceived to be a liar. ‘Well, Weis said it, but he’s just a liar,’” he continued, characterizing what he believed is the conventional wisdom about coaches held by the public and news media.
“Believe it or not, there are coaches out there who aren’t liars.”
Weis said he intended to remain the head coach of the Fighting Irish until at least his son, Charlie, an eighth grader, graduates from Notre Dame, which is also Weis’ alma mater." Eddie | Email | Homepage | 01.02.07 - 4:10 pm | #
