So LSU fans were mad that a bowl-eligible and deserving ND team decided to actually accept an invitation to a bowl game in 1969, thereby squeezing LSU out? Sounds kind of backwards to me... every team that got in during the 45 years prior when ND should have gone to a bowl had reason to be thankful, rather than LSU being spiteful. Hmm... ND needed a near perfect game to upset LSU in '97 and for the most part did. ND had 0 turnovers and 0 penalties if I recall correctly. Not exactly par for the course in the Davie years. Pat | Email | Homepage | 12.29.06 - 10:39 pm | #

Theisman won the Heisman later that fall????
Plunkett (and Sonny Sixkiller) might disagree.
You know, both Joe & the Rocket deserved the award.
Joe was the best I ever saw in person. He just knew how to win. Rocket the best I ever saw from the stands and on TV. Tim Brown's two TD's against MSU were so unbelievable that I wouldn't believe it if I weren't there to see it. (The moonlanding was on TV but staged,...right???)
I guess you could add Brady to the mix. Records at ND are special and the comebacks against MSU, UCLA, 2004 USC (he won that in the last minute, right??) make Montana look ordinary (Air Force, North Carolina and ? Purdue).
Enjoy this group. They were never dominant. They never quit. They never had ANY advantage. And they still managed to keep our dreams, however so faint, ALIVE.

IIRC the LSU game in 70 correctly, at one point, LSU recovered a fumble inside the Irish 10 yard line. We stuffed them on three straight plays and then blocked their field goal attempt.
I believe that game was billed as a battle between two of the top defenses in the country. dbldomer7375 | Email | Homepage | 12.30.06 - 8:41 am | #

The SEC stat is a little misleading. Of current SEC members, ND has played LSU more often than the others; but historically, ND played Georgia Tech far more often. Most of those 30+ games occurred when Georgia Tech was in the SEC. matt | Email | Homepage | 12.30.06 - 9:09 am | #

I was at the '97 regular-season win by the Irish in Baton Rouge. It was hard to believe how flawlessly the Irish played that day. By 5min into the 3rd quarter, the stadium was 85% empty. What a beautiful sight 'twas that.
Of course, the rematch a few weeks later was a different story. D'oh. c-stone | Email | Homepage | 12.30.06 - 9:51 am | #

Tech left the SEC in 1963, and then were independent until they joined the ACC in 1978. Lo-fi | Email | Homepage | 12.30.06 - 2:34 pm | #

The reason LSU still holds a grudge against ND over the '69 season are as follows (facts might be a little fuzzy as I'm reciting old bedtime stories):
LSU finished the year 9-1 and turned down an invite to the Sugar Bowl because they expected to be invited to the Cotton to play Texas (I believe) who was #1 (I believe). After LSU declined the Sugar, ND voted to go to a bowl for the first time ever. The Cotton invited ND over LSU. Thus, as legend holds, one of LSU's finest teams ever was denied a bowl game because ND changed its position on bowl games. Had LSU known that ND would be accepting an invite it would have gone to the Sugar. Chris | Email | Homepage | 01.02.07 - 3:04 pm | #
