Pretty good quotes from a few guys who have won a game or two in their day.

Looking forward to his own words about how he plans to shape our D. If his coaching is anything like his Keyshawn bulldozer tackle, I can't wait.

The one word that I love about the description of Brown: Passionate....that's the kind of coach or defense needs right now. Someone who will fire them up. I'm very excited to see what formations or defense will run next year. Perhaps we'll finally have some different blitz packages besides "Plow up the gut and do your best to get to the QB". And perhaps our DB's will even play a little bump 'n run as well....no more 5 yard cushions!

Corwin Brown has a fantastic football pedigree as evidenced by what the Parcells/Belichick Tree is saying about him. He also had good training as a Skunkbear, and I am excited about what he brings to the table. I'll bet that he becomes a star recruiter, too.

I like this hire the more I think about it. I grew up in Fort Wayne where in '93 coach Al Sims led our IHL hockey team to a championship over a heavily favored opponent - a team from San Diego that some considered the best minor league hockey team ever assembled. The Komets swept every series in the playoffs - didn't lose a game. Apparently one favored Sims technique was to make highlight films to show the players - play after play of guys hustling, making plays, and getting breaks. Never anything negative. Since then I've always reflected on the importance of 'positive' coaching, and Brown seems like a guy who will bring this and more to ND. Hats off to the brain trust for this one - I think our 'athleticism' will seem much better with a guy like this at the helm.

"Corwin Brown was a fundamentally sound football player and is a fundamentally sound football coach"

While I love to hear the passionate labels as well, I think that this is an even higher compliment coming from Romeo Crennel. The two easiest ways to improve a team, as Lou would say, is by increased effort/attitude, and by harping on the fundamentals. Football is about technique, blocking, catching, tackling. Strict attention to fundamentals (especially to our DBs coming from a former DB) along with a passionate, attitude based approach can have a drastic improvement to our D. God Bless.

Seems Weis called in a few chips. Wasn't there an some weird Coach that implied you couldn't influence an NFL coach?

Belichick doesn't seem like the kind of guy to take time out of his day, especially the week before the AFC Championship game, to put out a statement unless he really believes in it. Brown sounds better and better. Hopefully this will be the breath of fresh air the defense looked like they needed this year. I'm really looking forward to hearing Brown's overall defensive philosophy and his take on what needs to be done before fall camps.

JohnWA,

Exactly. Feed me information. Information on schemes, formations, different points of emphasis outside of the whole "we want to be more aggressive" thing EVERY DC always says. Am I the only one who notices that everyone ALWAYS says we need a more aggressive DC, or this or that DC is aggressive, and somehow the old DC is always a "bend-but-dont-break" guy? Has there ever been a guy who says "we were way too aggressive last year, we need to sit back more"? Sorry for the rant.

It sounds like CB is the kind of guy who will really get after a player who doesn't tackle well. Perhaps we will see Zibby turn into a monster after all?

I'm guessing it's too late for this hiring to have any impact on our D recruiting for this year. But I'm holding out hope that an odd five star guy might take another look at ND in these waning days.

That is an impressive list of compliments from some pretty damn good football people. Belichick couldn't even bother to say Eric Mangini's name when they played earlier in the season...I can't imagine he'd go out of his way to praise Corwin Brown is he didn't really mean it.

On another note: Brady has a minor knee injury and won't be playing in the senior bowl. I assume this is the same knee upon which he was wearing a brace in the Sugar Bowl. Anyone have an info on when this injury occurred?

Look, don't get too excited about the quotes. Here's how it works - "Hey, Bill, I'll draft a couple sentences hyping CB, you take a look at it and as long as you don't have major issues, do you mind if I attribute it to you? Not a problem? Great."

By the way, was there any announcement re Minter's status?

Ron P devoted much of his comment in the press conference to saying he's going to be learning how to be a QB coach from the best QB coach in the business.

Charlie is the QB coach for the foreseeable future.

Wonder if it was the long run against USC. He looked like he was in pain after the play. Hopefully it is not something serious. Maybe it's a ploy to get the Lions to pass on him.......

GRNDFan:

Now that is funny!!!!! Although the copboard is bare in Oakland too.

Domer '99,

Probably on one of the players where he was running for his life from some blizting linebacker or being smashed to the ground by a 340 pound DT. These instances were too numerous to keep track of, so I can't give you any one instance.

Man I hope our O-line performs well next year...

Looks like Shark isn't going into the NFL draft.

http://chicagosports.chicagotrib...-home- headlines

Good luck to him.

Minter and Vaas are out. Weis said it right at the beginning.

Not surprising. Cubs wouldn't want to share him and get him injured. Shark probably can milk a much longer career in MLB plus Chciago -home-boy endorsements if he makes the big leagues...probably not a bad decision.

That stinks about Shark... I would have loved to see him play on Sundays. Maybe he'll give it a crack in a couple years if baseball doesn't work. But I still wish him the best of luck playing for one of my favorite baseball teams.

Of course, I only say that I wish Shark would play football instead of baseball because I find football far more interesting.

That's "if he makes the big leagues" which is far from definite. Good luck to him, but I was looking forward to rooting for him on Sundays. I can hardly stand to watch baseball, so unless he does make it to the bigs and the Cubs get to the Series (ha ha!) I won't be seeing much of him.

Pro baseball money has gotten ridiculous. I was looking forward to following him in the NFL, but I too wish him all the best. Hey, if he's disenchanted with MLB in five years, he'll only be 27, so you never know...

You think Belichick actually took the time to draft up a quote for him? Bigdadda is right. They are nothing more than quotes, that's it.

He has a huge hole to fill and ND are taking a big risk - only because he has not been in this role before. I like the hire only because he seems hungry and is unproven. Minter was already a head coach, he had nothing left to prove. Give me another Barry Alvarez BEFORE his goes to Wisconsin not after.

Sorry... "ND is" not "ND are"

Oh yeah...I would not be surprised if some NFL team spends a low round pick on him anyway, ensuring that if he ever does want to play pro football, they will have his rights. Both the Cowboys and Raiders have done this in the past and ultimately reaped dividends.

I think this article means he won't be IN the draft...

Anybody know why Peter Vaas is out?

Re: Vass - I heard from someone who knows him very well that even Vass himself doesn't know why he was out. It was a total shock to him...

Samardzija shouldn't worry much about being a Cub. If he shows any promise at all, they'll trade him to the Marlins or Pirates for someone at the end of his career in order to make a push for second place in the wild-card race.

Whether written by (nope) the HC's they're attributed to or not, the "Quotes" regarding CB's hire get around. They help assuage whatever potential negatives may have come from the staff shakeup. One hand washes the other. Think old BB isn't expecting some inside info on a fifth round pick some year ... that CW may "Givens" him?

I'm pleased with the pick - have to agree with Brad, though, you never hear "we are looking for a little bit more laid-back defensive scheme." Either way, change is good, and here's also wishing coaches Vaas and Minter the best in their futures.

And, Shark ... ???

I saw this on another website. Looks like Trattou is visiting Florida. Don't know if that means anything or not, but here is the link.

http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=168...p=9&c=6& yr=2007

Free trip to Gainesville. Not so bad this time of year. Justin's interest level is rated as "None."

Don't they just put "None" on everyone else once someone gives a verbal? We all know how those can change. I believe that Chris Little's said "None" for ND after he gave his verbal to FSU. Also, on Rivals, they have him as a soft verbal now. Hopefully, it doesn't mean anything, but I am just throwing it out there.

That sounded like a weight loss infomerical.... "I loved my new Corwin Brown. Only twenty minutes a day and now I can fit into the same jeans I wore in high school." Sadly, he no longer plays. ND could use him.

I’m not clever like you fellas.
Don’t know if Corwin Brown is a good choice as DC or not.
I guess the proof will be in the pudding come the evening of September 15, 2007
at the post game press conference in Ann Arbor.
That’s when a certain whiny coach who likes to point fingers at someone else, says that the Notre Dame defense won the game.

Re Vaas: I have no real information, but I am going to guess (because that's what we're here for).

It isn't that Vaas is bad at all, it's just that CW wants the job for himself. He took Haywood as OC (who had no experience in the role) and now Powlus. The parts of the team he wants to personally oversee anyway, he might as well be training someone new instead of getting in the way of or not using someone like Vaas who knows what they are doing.

Best of luck to Vaas. I'm sure he is a good coach, and I hope he finds a fulfilling position soon.

I understood CB to say the other defense coaches will stay? Did you read it differently?

I thought/was hoping we might get 1 or 2 more changes on defense.

Regarding Trattou, is Meyer trying to pull a Raeshon McNeil move, like he tried (and failed) last year, and snipe one of our guys after he committed to us, even though Urban has said he thinks this practice is wrong.

Tommy O, Shark is draft-eligible (three years out of HS) and has used up his college eligibility. He doesn't have to declare for the draft for a team to select him. That team just then owns the exclusive right to sign him if he were to decide to play football later on.

ESPN Article on Shark going to the Cubs: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/ ne...e=ESPNHeadlines

JM,

I bet you are close to the truth on Vaas. QB development is work Charlie wants to do himself, not delegate--well, except for the real grunt parts. And those are easier to give to Powlus than a guy like Vaas. Kind of sucks for Vaas though. He was probably doing a great job and that, in a way, is what got him fired.

Thanks JohnWA for clarifying my earlier post. Rightly, Samardzija is informing the NFL of his intentions before someone wastes a pretty high pick on him when he fully intends to play baseball and only baseball. This doesn't exclude him from being drafted, nor prevent a team from drafting him.
I believe that this is the manner in which the Dallas Cowboys acquired Roger Staubach, Chad Henning, and Herschel Walker.

Trattou is a TE. He is coming to ND to play under Weis. The trip to Gainesville is just a spying excursion to report on UF recruiting techniques primarily, secondarily to absorb excessive amounts of southern coed hospitality in the coldest month of the year. Go Justin!

trattou is a DE

What do you guys think about Samardzija's decision. I think he is guarunteed more money playing baseball but would have liked to see him try both.

I would have loved to see him play football in the NFL too, but it's not my decision to make...nor any of ours.

He's walking away with a Notre Dame degree and a guaranteed entry-level salary of $10 million to do something he loves. If only we were all so lucky.

Congratulations to Shark on a great decision.

Let me see, if I had the opportunity to pitch in the major leagues. Work every four or five days and make 10 million in a few short years and possibly make a helluva lot more and still be playing when I am 40, or getting my head busted going over the middle, maybe being able to play when I am 30 and still being able to walk when I am 50 and maybe make 10 million. JS didnt waste his time going to class at ND, they taught him how to make sound decisions. Great decision, how long did Bo Jackson last? Football is a brutal game and as much as we love watching it, have you ever watched a player come out of the locker room after a game with ice on every joint?

If he's good enough for Parcells and Belichek, he's good enough for me.

urk, thanks Chris. Can I claim it was a typo?

As far as the Vaas firing, I'm not terribly suprised. The first thing I thought immediately was that with the player turnover we are going to go through next year, Charlie needs to get one of our completely inexperienced QBs ready and in a hurry to compete in the fall. While we all expect a bit of a down year, somehow I don't think that phrase exists in Charlie's lexicon. I think he wants total and personal control over the QBs to prep them, and this just makes it easier for him to dominate the preparation of the offense. It's the best way for him to get the most out of the team, and it makes sense. It just happens to be a bad situation for Vaas, and I'm sure he'll find a nice job soon.

For the Shark, I honestly think it's a pretty smart move. Career wise, it means more money. He won't have to deal with nearly as much pressure to make a return on the Cub's investment, as his relative inexperience in baseball (not completely focusing on it) will give him more time to hone his skills. He'll have more money, likely a much longer career, and get an opportunity to play near his hometown (I live in Valpo right now). It makes sense. I think NOT deciding to play two sports is the best thing he could have done. It would have been cool to see, but football alone places an enormous amount of strain on the human body, and when you replace the off-season opportunity for down time with constant pitching, it likely would have ruined him for both sports and drastically shortened his career. Good Luck, Shark.

CW thinking as he announces Corwin as DC: "Things are going to change around here - fast!"

Charlie performed the Vaasectomy so that he could be completely in control of QB mentoring. Ron P in the press conference repeatedly said that his new job is to learn how to become a QB coach from the best QB coach in the land.

Sorry. I'd be more excited about Rick Slager coming back as quarterbacks coach. I hated watching every single down that man took at ND.

Anyone else vaguely worried about the following scenario...

CB turns out great. His defense wins us a game or two next year that we shouldn't. Still, the team as a whole isn't that hot -- maybe 8-4/9-3. Then the much-anticipated 2008 season comes. The offense really clicks, and the defense is a monster, maybe even taking us to the title game. Suddenly CB -- a hot coach who happens to be young, hungry, and African-American -- is in conversations for college head coaching jobs.

Here's the question: does one great year balance out losing him after only two?

BlueDevilDave,
Anytime an assistant coach at ND is hired as a head coach somewhere is good for ND, even if we lose a good coordinator. We should be able to attract any good coordinator who aspires to be a head coach somewhere.

BlueDevilDave,

24 Hour has is dead-on. Coordinators want a shot somewhere where their scheme and drive can impress enough people to bag a big game. Coaches want to be coordinators, and coordinators want to bag coaching jobs. If Corwin successfully advanced to a head coaching job in a short amount of time, it would only encourage other young DC's to want to take the ND job. That type of flow in and advancement of talent would be the best thing Charlie could do. Take note of what has happened to Parcells/Belichek assistants over the years. Those guys always seem to be able to easily find more bright young coaches to take their place.

That said, I think the scenario you describe is relatively unlikely, even though possible. Corwin has never held a DC position, and he seems to me to be the type of individual who is highly committed to what he does. Even if our new D is very successful to the level you describe, I would expect to see Corwin on the sidelines for the next 3-4 years at the least. If he reaches that level of success, it could be a better career move (due to his youth, etc.) to sustain it for a few years in order to increase his demand, and land a better job where he could have a better opportunity for long term success.

The HC gets a pool of money to divide up between the assistants. I kind of wonder if it was a deal where Weis was paying Powlus less than Vass and CB more (to lure him away from the NFL) than Minter. Just a theory.

Good theory, Peck. I hadn't thought of that one. Even at ND, the pool of money for assistants is going to be limited, and I'm sure Vaas was pretty expensive for a QB coach.

no surprise that ND had to turn to a Michigan man in order to turn around the D.

You are right. It should come as no surprise that a Michigan man who wants to coach a great D would come to ND.

Couple things, which I will likely post both here and on the other newer post in case this one is dead...

Interesting quotes here, and a great angle I never really thought of.

Allen Wallace of SuperPrep said he thinks one of the main reasons for moving Powlus to QB coach is because he did an excellent job recruiting on campus, and many think as a recent player he could have a major impact in family rooms on the road rather than on the campus.

Also, there is a great quote by Corwin Brown noting that he still has a large amount of close friends who coach in the Chicago public league.

http://www.southbendtribune.com/...398/-1/ NDSPORTS

Also, it would appear that Urban "I'm not going after committed players because of my morals, and by that I mean I am going after committed players" Meyer is about to meet his match in the SEC recruiting races. Nasty little segment about Nick Saban talking smack about LSU to committed LSU players.

About midway down http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com...lege/ index.html

And so it begins again. With Bill Parcells retiring today for the 74th time have already seen media speculation that Jerry Jones may go after a "big name candidate" and they specifically metion Charlie Weis. Guess that's to be accepted given most coaches (see Saban, Nick) are, as CW said, liars. I am confident he is not.

Brad,

The point made about Powlus and recruits appears to be a valid one; everything I've heard or read about him in that area is that he has much more than what it takes. He is apparently great with both parents as well as recruits. And he has a youthful presence and energy, one which should span his position as coach and link to all of the folks in the living room.

Somehow, I don't think we'll need to worry about qb talent for some time to come. It's no stretch to assume that RP's recruiting magic will alsoextend to other positions on the "O" side of the ball, if not further.
