"...it will take more than just stories about hanging out in Flanner Hall."

And passing out autographed head shots of himself to the ladies during Flanner Hall SYRs and Formals. (I kid you not.) Good guy, but definitely had a bit of an ego. Hopefully that self-confidence and love for ND will be an attribute when selling recruits on coming to ND.

On another note...Ah, the days of Flanner. Well, for two years, before being shut down and moved into Knott Hall (in my case.) My senior year I actually had a class in one of the rooms I used to hang out in during my freshman year. That was odd...

If anybody can teach someone how to have a thick skin its got to be Ron. He took so much crap during his ND days after being so hyped. Probably the best person to have working with Clausen...not so much from a technique standpoint but from a mental standpoint so maybe we won't see Clausen handing out autographed headshots in the dormitory.

as far as an ego, how could he not. He was the most hyped since, well nobody. Clausen is the next hyped QB to come into ND and hopefully he can keep a level head.
there is nobody who can cut through the bull for the young recruits. afterall, this is Notre Dame.

great post guys

Pat, I think the last former player to coach at Notre Dame was this guy named Michael Haywood.

Holy sweet crap. Paragraph to be edited. I've made a lot of silly errors before, but this might be the topper.

Pat, if that's the worst mistake you ever make, you'll be fine. Your other writing triumphs far overshadow any slipup like that.

Pat,

Speaking of small mistakes, you wrote "Powlus will certainly will have his hands full" in the last paragraph. Just lettin' you know.

The link to past assistants isn't working.

Hey, I hadned out head shots at SYRs. Seemed a more logically that having a stupid-ass roomate call and beg some high school senior photo out for a silly date in my dorm.

Link should be working now.

Wasn't it three Heismans?

okay, off topic subject
did you any of you see Tom Lemmings Chat . . .
all i have to say in recruiting is that it is all fair. Until the kid signs, the kid is fair game to recruit, there is no honor recruiting see Urban Meyer.

Ah, Flanner. The best thing about our dorm was the 30-minute "Flanner period" after parietals hit. (We wouldn't dare call it a Grace period.)

That's because a "Grace period" would last, oh, about 5 1/2 hours longer on weekends.

I always liked Powlus. All I needed to know about him was the first minute of this video.... http://youtube.com/watch?v=PQ9yM-RZv7g He would have won a couple of Heismans had he been in a pro-style offense at Florida or FSU in the mid 90's. I'm sure he still has nightmares about attempting to run the option.

I remember that game well. It was the first game that I took my wife (we were just engaged at that time) to see. Even though ND lost, that is the game that made her a football fan. We had the good fortune of having seats on the field right where the catch was made. It was an unbelievable first game for her to see. Only thing that would have been better would have been a win.

OMG.....

Flanner sucked like no other!

I was a Keenanite but had a lot of Flanner friends. One memory of Flanner was when one of the guys got really drunk and passed out. They brought him over to Grace and dropped him off on the same floor as where his room was on Flanner. When he woke up, he was still a little drunk. He ended up going over to where he thought his room was and tried to fight the guy thinking he had broken into his room. Good times, clean living...

Wow Binny, I had suppressed that memory of Ron P. running the option..............painful

I had to watch Ron Powlus run a Jim Colletto offense. It was awful. 1996-1999 football seasons were really bad.

Now Colletto is offensive line coach of my hometown NFL team and Ron Powlus is QB coach of my alma mater. :(

off subject, but do you think we land this brian smith kid? i mean decent looking LB to say the least, could become impressive as long as his instincts can drown out his lack of speed, which rivals has as a 4.72.

I was at ND from 93-97, and had to endure three years of Powlus as the QB. I mostly remember him as being slow and having happy feet in the pocket.

Was surprised to hear that he was handing out autographed head shots of himself to the ladies. Because throughout his ND career wasn't he dating to his hometown honey, whom he went on to marry?

I'm pretty sure you're correct, SouthQuad_Domer. I'm not saying that Ron was looking for any love from the ladies, just that he seemed to pass out more pictures to the ladies than to guys. Maybe it's just that he was approach by more ladies for his autograph.
