Pat, thanks for posting that letter. Whereas BGS is an outstanding site for facts and items concerning the football team, this is something different and truly towering. This is the fabric that makes us.
I've never been to the crash site, and probably never will get there. But what was witnessed there, and what has been maintained, is part of the legend, lore and seemingly mythical dimension that comprises Notre Dame.
Thank you for your very notable contribution to our legacy, Mr. Heathman.
Here's hoping that I'm wrong, but I sense that, in the ESPN-Age, too many readers will glance at a few lines of your post and move on.
Tradition.

Thank you for the post, Pat, and especially the snailmail address. When a man turns 90 having a bunch of loving snailmail to open probably means a lot.
After reading this I was thinking about how faithfully Mr. Heathman has cared for the memorial site, taken pilgrims to the spot Knute died, etc. I want to thank him and wish him a Happy Birthday. Also, I would like to have his autograph. I am including a check for a few bucks to Mr. Heathman, and then will have a keepsake after he endorses the back. I am thanking him again on the check's memo line.
I'm not trying to be a bigshot here (because I am not a bigshot!) but if any of you other BGS brethren feel like slipping Easter a little folding money, imagine how great that would make him feel! The Irish put their money where their heart is.
Thanks again, Pat. Voice in the Wilderness | Email | Homepage | 03.27.07 - 12:10 pm | #

One of the highlights of the Penn State pep rally was hearing Mr. Heathman's story and seeing him receive his honor. The man is an amazing representative of Notre Dame and everything it stands for. Hearing us the student body chanting his name probably is a moment he will never forget, and was one of the more memorable scenes out of many less than inspirational pep rallies. It has been very interesting to have a Google Alert for Blogs on "Kansas Flint Hills!"
Yours came up today!
We now have a 22 county Flint Hills Tourism Coalition – this is the new website: http://www.kansasflinthills.travel/
Our web site is to promote the Kansas Flint Hills; and we are so happy to be in the 22 page color photo spread in National Geographic's April Issue on the Kansas Flint Hills, as a distinctive landscape.
We are really looking forward to the increased interest following that event.
We would appreciate a link from your site, to ours, if you are willing to do so. THANKS!
Best wishes!

Here is a blurb from the Chicago Tribune Article...
A 6-foot-7, 225-pound tight end from Cincinnati has verbally committed to attend Notre Dame starting in 2008, becoming the fifth high school junior to commit to the Fighting Irish.
Kyle Rudolph of Cincinnati's Elder High School said the fact that Notre Dame tight ends the past two years were finalists for the Mackey Award -- which goes to the nation's top tight end -- played a role in his decision. The players were Anthony Fasano -- now with the Dallas Cowboys -- and John Carlson. rbingham'97 | Email | Homepage | 03.28.07 - 9:05 am | #
