Wow, either you guys were really hoping for CW to get fired or are extremely efficient in your due diligence.

Keep this list updated and warm, I think you're going to need it in a year or so. I'm hoping you won't, because I like CW, but if he doesn't make significant changes to the team that result in significant improvement next year, even I won't be on his band wagon anymore.

Are we going to get any BGS analysis of the USC game? An Odds & Sods and or Statistically Speaking? I've been holding a comment about Jimmy's performance that seemed out of place in all the Charlie-bashing (or supporting) that's been going in the comments sections.

I do love the comments on the spreadsheet. That alone made for a good read.

Amazin' work. No wonder this site is top-ranked.

But, if this criteria were used a few years ago, Charlie Weis would not have even made the inventory list of ND coaching candidates to begin with.

Thought about that, Joe. We figured 'sitting head coaches' was a pretty good pool to start with. And I can't imagine the outrage if ND hired another guy with no HC experience to succeed Charlie. Sometimes that can work out (see Stoops, Bob) but for our situation, it was a nonstarter.

Would've been cool to see ratings on some other coaches not currently at an NCAA school.... Maybe possible active NFL coaches, Lou, Ditka.

It really seemed to me that if anyone had done a similar analysis on Ty-Dub, he wouldn't have been hired either. He had 1 really good season at Stanford which seems to be the big reason he was hired...that and our first 3 choices probably weren't interested back then either....

What, no comment on the Zooker? Dang.

Could you also include FBS / Div1AA coaches, or are those also non-starters for ND?
I'm still giggling about the Joe Tiller comment. You guys rock.

Based on the 2008 records in the spreadsheet.. you guys have been working on this for a while.. premonition of things to come??

If CW were to exit, I do think Dantonio would be a good fit.. he has done very well with sub-par talent..ie Hoyer.. His teams play with passion and love the run game..

Aside from Auburn canning Tubbs (which was ridiculous), his offensive coordinator (new this year) has been highly suspect. So offensive genius isn't his strong suit.

Yes, this is a moot point, but isn't that part of what discussion boards are for: Why does everyone seem to be assuming that Urban Meyer would have been / would be next year a candidate for this job? Was his only reason for not coming to ND the fact that he saw the bare-cubbard writing on the wall for the '07 and '08 seasons? If that were the case, he would not have even talked to the guys who flew out to talk to him. There was something else he didn't like, and I doubt that whatever that was has changed.

Stoops, Meyer, Richt, etc - I don't see any of the top-level coaches leaving what they have and coming to ND now or ever. We'd be looking at some lesser-known quantities who just might have what we need.

My true hope is that Charlie pulls this together and has some successful years, to give Skip Holtz time to season and improve himself to take over when Charlie is done.

Re Bielema, he didn't "avoid" Ohio State in the 12-win season, the Big Ten didn't schedule them.

But the trajectory at UW hasn't been good . . .

I am not a fan of Urban. Yes, he is a good coach. No question. But is he the type of guy we want representing our university? He seems to be shady on the recruiting trail and at least allow, if not encourage, the same from his assistants (e.g. Greg Mattison recruiting for UF while still employed at ND). He also seems relatively tolerant of player misconduct (a player using an AK-47 who was not strongly disciplined comes to mind). This year he kicked a field goal with a huge lead over Miami (I think) and virtually no time left on the clock (maybe even as it expired). I also remember him throwing his players under the bus after last years bowl loss. I have no other examples of the top of my head, but I do not have a good impression of him as a person based on these last few years. Could be I'm just bitter about him turning down ND, but I don't feel that way toward Stoops. My two cents.

As always, well done. I sure hope I'm not pulling this speadsheet out again after the Nevada game next year.

"I am not a fan of Urban. Yes, he is a good coach. No question. But is he the type of guy we want representing our university?"

Yes.

What's up w/ Dylon's love for David Elson of Western Kentucky

also, not that it matters at this point, but that list would be more complete if it included years of experience as coordinators and also NFL experience as well.

Maybe next time. ;)

To all talking about charlie isn't going to solve anything he is the coach for now. I am myself think that we should talk about the future. Is anybody else think that QB position it is up for grab next year ? what do you guys think ?

I am all for finding a healthier option in 2009 or 2010.

I want ND to be the Fightin' Manginos!

Jay,
You guys love spreadsheets! Thanks.

I would like to request a more germaine one. Weis is staying and a contingency plan should be in place. But closer in, I believe we will be looking for some assistants. Most probably offensive line and coordinator positions. I would love to delve into that one.
One thought I had was PSU's Bill Kenney or Oregon's Chip Kelley as OC.

Nice work on the list. But not sure how large a grain of salt to take with desirability rankings that don't give Neuheisel straight zeros.

How about starting up talk about what assistants are going to start playing musical chairs? Weis is here to stay, but I think it was pretty obvious from Jack's comments that everyone under Charlie is going to have to meet with the Bob's.
I'm going to assume that both Corwin and Tenuta (if he doesn't get hired by another school, he is a bit of journeyman) are safe. The defense was not a problem at all this year. If the offense could have gotten some first downs, they played well enough to win every game.
I'm sure Voice will back me up that Latina should be the first one under the microscope. Right along with that will be Haywood. Any idea who we might pick up to replace these guys?

I wouldn't say Tenuta is untouchable. I've never seen 7 people fail to get any pressure on the QB so regularly. Our blitzes are not well disguised.

Latina and Powlus. I wouldn't even bring them "under the microscope" but simply thank them for their service and wish them luck in their next job.

I kind of hate that the gasbag is safe but the assistants may be fired. If a bunch of assistants need to go then I think the HC should go as well. There has been so little improvement in the team over the last two years that any decent assistant coach is going to stay away from here, figuring that the gasbag probably will be fired next year, and the assistants will be replaced as well.

If the gasbag is such a great HC let him train his assistants over the off season and win with the group he has. If he can't do that fire them all when you fire the gasbag and start over.

Comment for Dave--- how come Skip Holtz is not on the radar?

A more interesting topic would be a potential candidate's interest in ND. This is like picking out all the girls at a bar that I would do,not realizing that they don't want anything to do with me.

max-

We were using a minimum average score of "1" in the desirability index. Skip Holtz did not qualify. I realize it's subjective, but I didn't have time to do everyone.

Agreed Rick, I think Latina and Powlus should be dropped like a rock. I just think the administration will give us one of the "we looked at our teams progress as a whole and determined we needed to move in a different direction" lines. That's what I mean by "under the microscope."

Not that Tom... I would disagree that we can't get top flight assistants. Tenuta came in at a position underneath his former title of DC. And I don't think Tenuta magically became a worse coach coming here. His talent at Ga Tech wouldn't be considered blue chip by any means. The D line was incredibly small and inexperienced compared to his units at GT. And although we didn't get a lot of pressure, you can't look at any game and say that the defense did not do enough to win the game. It was the offense and their inability to move the ball (Syracuse, BC, USC, and Pitt 2nd half) and their untimely turnovers (MSU, UNC, BC) that ultimately caused the team to lose.

If they do decide to sack Corwin and Tah-Noo-Tah, any chance Romeo comes from Cleveland? Also, some of these guys that are getting the boot, where do their expertise lie? Anyone know what's in Al Groh's history, or Sly Croom?

Not a bad list of candidates for ND. We can shorten the list by finding out who wants to be a CFB Analyst in 5 years.

Oder - I agree, in part. I don't really know enough about Richt, but Stoops isn't going anywhere unless Meyer leaves UF. I'm in grad school at Oklahoma, and there was a black cloud over the entire state when Zook got fired, as all assumed Stoops would leave the Sooners for the Gators. It's the only college job that would ever pull him away from Norman, so there's no chance in hell he'd ever come to South Bend. As for Meyer, I get the impression that he likes to ride in on his white horse, build some success, then gets a little bored. I think he'd be open to the idea of saving any big-name program, and I'm not so sure (given some of the sports columns coming out of Florida this past week) that ND doesn't have a certain degree of magnetism for him. Though I have some misgivings about his character, he's one helluva coach, and anything can be repackaged and made to shine with a little spit and elbow grease (not to mention marketing).

If both Latina and Mendoza aren't relieved of their duties, we can absolutely expect 2009 to be pretty much like 2008. Nothing magical is going to happen in the next 9 months to make our soft, lethargic, offensive linemen the "all day tough" studs that Weis promised when he was introduced as the HC four years ago. Why Charlie can't see that his number one problem is his offensive line is a mystery to me.

Looking at that list is like telling your online girlfriend that your overbearing, b!tch of a wife has revoked your internet privileges. Or something like that.

Tenuta is not a journeyman. He was with Cooper at Ohio St and Cooper got fired, he went to North Carolina but did not relish the situation there, so he went to Georgia Tech with Chan Gailey, who was fired. Tenuta coached GT in the bowl game last year and was considered for the head coaching job. Part of the problem with the blitz packages is that we got no push from the DL which allowed teams to pick up our blitzes. Latina has always been considered a horrible run blocking coach but very good with pass pro. Remember Eli Manning was QB at Ole Miss when Latina was there. His OLines have always been considered "soft". No surprise that Mendoza was the S&C coach at Ole Miss. Haywood did a terrible job as the RB coach,Powlus is not ready for primetime players yet and we need a good QB coach who is an outstanding OC. Weis shouldnt have to teach his assistants how to coach, they should already know how to coach. A great start is a tough as nails S&C coach who can create an attitude, not only on the OLine but everywhere. I am amazed at how hard some of the teams I watched hit people and how soft we are in all areas. "Nasty" is an attitude that has to be nourished with toughness.

I don't mean this as a personal knock on the guy, but WHY THE HECK is Haywood being interviewed for HC jobs? Sure, he was OC at UT and ND, but he didn't call the plays at either place until this year, right? Are UW (this year) and Houston (last year) simply interviewing him to check the "minority candidate" block? I hate to be so cynical, but the vast majority of voices on this board would be happy to see him leave. Yet he's getting head coaching interest? It sounds like certain schools are interviewing an underqualified African-American candidate to say they did so, but guarantee that they're free and clear to hire someone else because he "wasn't qualified enough". To me, that's a heckuva lot more questionable than firing a black coach you've already hired. Why not give a serious look to Charlie Strong? Is it because he's SO ready to be a head coach, that if you didn't hire him, it'd look suspect? I just don't get it.

You'll need to keep it in the top drawer.

Holy crap, an ESPN piece that I think most (at least many) on this board will agree with. What a strange week it's been.

Sorry for two consecutive posts with links, but this is at least a funny one. At the very least, it can help us take our minds off the fact that ND's BCS contract had absolutely no impact on this year's bowl season.

Why all the low scores for Les Miles? He seems to do very well. Is there something else about him?

I think Swarbuck is looking at Rod Akey of Idaho.

Les Miles is a total fraud and a clown. The LSU of the last three or four games this season (30 points down at home to Troy entering the 4th quarter, home loss to Ole Miss, loss to a poor Arkansas team) is indicative of the true abilities of Miles.

I'm pretty sure this is the first season without any of Saban's recruits. And it eventually showed. Believe me, I was praying for Michigan to hire him last season. It would have been a guarantee that they go 9-3 every season tops, and lose at least 3 of every 4 to ND (assuming we had a competent coach).

Yah, 9-3, poor bastards, that would suck...

"I am not a fan of Urban. Yes, he is a good coach. No question. But is he the type of guy we want representing our university?"

HELL YES

Versus Rodriguez? Michigan might have been a mess this season, but within a couplathree years that team will be 11-1 or 12-0 or no worse than 10-2. And they will stay like that.

Rich Rod was a game away from taking West Virginia to the BCS national championship. He has proven himself everywhere he's been. Miles' only claim to success at OSU before getting the job at LSU was an upset of Oklahoma. In Baton Rouge he inherited a program that was loaded with several top classes. Now that it's all on him, it is trending downwards. LSU will be lucky to go 8-4 next season. We want no part of Miles.

Still amazed on the love affair many have for the defense.. definitely improving but blowing leads at NC, Pitt, Navy and Syracuse plus 2 safeties as leading tacklers... not sure we are any where close to "good." Kuntz was a sad replacement for Trevor Laws..

NC tied us 17-17 and then the hated Jimmy Clausen et al drove us down for a 24-17 lead the very next drive... defense failed from there on..

Pitt..17-3..drive to open the second half let Pitt back in the game

Navy 27-7 folded (but clearly had some reserves in)

Up 23-10 on Syracuse.. folded

Not to mention that they made average QB's .. didn't we play 2nd stringers for SDSU, NC and Pitt?? They all looked like Heisman candidates..

Bring in Skip Holtz as an assistant to Charley

Maybe we should get Chavis out of Tennessee -- he got fired and has the 4th ranked defense in the country... and that is with the 117th offense....

ND is 39th in defense and 74 in offense according the stats site..

jmc, 39th in defense is WORLDS away from where we were. I don't know if we're "good," but we're better, and improving. I'm just thinking if the offense would have played at the same level of the defense, ESPECIALLY in the BC game, they would have won. We just don't have a very deep group. When the offense can't get first downs, the defense remains on the field, and without a deep line-up they're going to get tired.
And that Syracuse game was completely the offense's fault, they had too many opportunities to put them away and didn't.
And don't forget how NC tied us, by Jimmy throwing a pick six to open the second half. Should have been 24-10 (if not 31-10) after that second drive.

I really think the defense did a pretty good job this year. Yeah, they blew some leads in the second half of three games. BUT, in the second half of those games, our offense completely went into its shell and left our D out on the field for way to long. In those second halves, our offense was nothing more than a quick breather for the D before a 3 and out.

Just remember, it was only a few years ago that our D was giving up 400 yards through the air every quarter or so. I mean hell, in the Bostone College game, we held their QB to 73 YARDS PASSING. That is more than good enough to win, but when your offense keeps your D on the field, and gives you bad field position, you are going to give up some points.

To be nice, this is a pretty "optimistic" list -- why rank all coaches, as if they were all plausibly available? ND needs to be realistic and hone in on plausible candidates.

I agree that the defense played well enough to for ND to win every game, save maybe MSU. Not only were they on the field way more than they should have been, and not only were they constantly defending a short field, but once the offense started to tank it had to be mentally draining for them to know that they needed to basically pitch a shutout to win.

In the latter half of the season, the offense did nothing in terms of scoring, field position or sustained drives to help the defense. After a while, that has to get psychologically and physically tiresome.

The data you guys have collated is very impressive. I bet Jack Swarbrick has downloaded a copy of this and he's going to be checking the printout at the half in whatever bowl game we get.

mark, I completely agree with you about Urban Meyer, but no one else around here seems to. I've decided to just let it go. I guess transgressions such as he had can be forgiven so long as you spend a few years coaching in South Bend and win games.

I don't think the defense was that great this season. I know they didn't give up a lot of points but they got no pressure on the quarterback, were gashed against the run for the most part, and completely folded in the second half of most games. Just my opinion, though. At the end of the day, they gave up few enough points that the offense should have been able to outscore most teams, and they didn't. But the offense being bad the second half of the season doesn't completely excuse the defense's performance. Just look at jmc's comment above...Tennessee had a great defense and a horrible offense.

Of course, the alternative analysis of interest would be to see what interest these coaches would have in ND. That might be revealing as well. We all like to say, 'I would not date that person,' but perhaps "that" person would not accept a date with us! The merging of matrices just might cause shrinkage to a very small size.

of all the bowl possibilities, i hope we play ball state. and god forbid we should lose to them...

For OCmj and all the Great Moms out there in BGS territory.

Oh yeah Pat, Dave, Jay;
Don't forget open thread Saturday.

Who's up for a good laugh, read this article from the Chicago Trib, on the Weis situtation.

Jay -

I noted on your spreadsheet that David Elson from Weestern Kentucky was a 'Cathedral grad' from Indy.

Which of you guys has a tie to that great High School?

How can the defense be so tired.. we averaged 31 minutes in time of possession (rank of 30 improved from 107 last year).....

Also for you stats folks... here's the ND sack rank for the last 3 years.. 2008 81st, 2007 97th, 2006 34th... tackles for loss rank 111, 114, 46....

How does that figure with our new "pressure" defense...

Offense did enough to win those games.. defense failed to step up..

NO MEYER!

Threadjack --

As far as I can tell, it's BGS's fourth birthday today. Just wanted to pass along congratulations and thanks to the BGS crew for all the great reading.

If we are going for somebody big time what not go after Bill Cowher, that guy could motivate the Bus for all those years and didn't his daughter go to school in Indiana? I mean imagine the scowl on the sidelines! That would be awesome.

Happy B-day BGS.

Happy Birthday as well, Blue-Gray Sky.

Today is also the 75th anniversary of the 21st Amendment, the repeal of Prohibition.

Coincidence?

...jeeze...send this to University of Washington AD Woodward immediately...they're actually considering hiring the SC quarterback coach...which...all things considered...might not be a bad choice...

Anonymous,

LOL! I needed a good laugh after what's transpired this week - thank you!

...did I miss Skip Holtz on the list of Profiles for Potential Candidates?...

When I was passing by the Nicolas Sparks books at the supermarket today I thought, "Man, Nicolas Sparks could buy out the contract himself if only he was not an ex-ND track man." Stranger things have happened like University of Michigan and Boston College Poptarts. I can see U of ND turning down that crass capitalist (aka marketing) offer from Kellogg's. You can probably get them nicely aged at your local .99 only store.

Proud to see Irish soccer do so well in cold North Carolina against Stanford. It feels good to win and beat the Cardinal once again.
