Might want to make that Zach Martin who was playing in Florida. |
Check his name thoroughly, too. Is it Lomard, or Lombard? Seems to me is was spelled differently in different sections. |
That ESPN gets away with that crap is amazing. It's a huge conflict of interest. |

Irish Eyes is reporting that ND has hired Tony Alford as the new running backs coach. The bio information provided seems impressive, especially his work at Iowa State. Anyone on this site have any first hand knowledge of his coaching abilities? |
ESPN is still wearing it's Ty jersey, even at the level of pimping 18yr. old kids. For sure, the Lemming-made game on NBC is at times, hard to swallow, even I concede that Haden is not an analyst, merely a shill for ratings, but Bristol is in the political correct, hate ND, game, but will not answer why Ty is not on any "must hire" list, at the risk of being paranoid, ESPN views any resemblence of ND as passe, rather have the Steven A's, urban perspective., even at the high school level! The Army All-America game would have had at least one more person watching if I had even known it was going to be on TV that day. I sat down and was flipping through channels that night and saw the ESPN game, and wondered "Huh, I wonder when the Army AA game is. Surely it couldn't have been today or I would have heard something about it ahead of time." Did I miss the promos because I just don't watch enough shows on NBC outside of Saturday's in the fall? Didn't even see mention of it on this board. |

What about Eric Olsen at LG? |
Agree with Domer 97. If anything it probably validates Sanchez's decision. |
Pat's got something in the works on Alford... |
as i reported as a rumor abuot a week ago has been confirmed...... |
Sounds like Alford is an excellent hire. 13 fumbles in 8 years is pretty remarkable. |
Chuck - Olsen played 20 minutes as a freshman in 2006, so 2009 will be his final season for ND. The depth chart is for the start of the 2010 season. |
Wait, doesn't this recruiting thing ever end? |
Does the Alford hire mean that Weis isn't going to hire an OC? |
I don't think Carroll has anything to apologize for here. He honestly thinks Sanchez is not ready. He has said when the thought guys were ready for the NFL (Bush, White, Jarrett) and when he thought they weren't (M. Williams, Bing, Matua) and for the most part he has been correct. |
New RB Coach looks good. |
Am I the only one who just doesn't understand how a college student who is about to complete his fourth year of school and will graduate with a degree in May is considered an underclassman? I'm pretty sure that I finished school in four years and my parents were ready for me to be out in the real world. What a confusing world college football is. I just don't get the logic of it all. |
Well, your degree probably directly related to your post-college profession. Sanchez's future career has to do with his extra-curricular activities, in which he is rather inexeperienced. Akili Smith is the only 1st round QB in the last 20 years with fewer college starts than him. And starts are one of the only stats that have shown any ability to predict future success for QBs. |
The point isn't Sanchez being ready or not, it's the classless way that his coach hijacked his press conference. You say those things in private and give a short disagreeing statement at the presser, if you think you have to, but not a 5 minute diatribe. If I were a parent of a prospect, I wouldn't want my kid to be treated like that, and I would definitely counsel him to look elsewhere. |
guess what? bryant young is coming back to notre dame. He was a defensive beast with ND and a future H.O.F. with the NFL 49ers. This is GREAT news, as he will be able to give personal experience and input to the defense. His role will be DEFENSIVE GRAD ASSITANT. |
OMG! Bryant Young! And its certainly not the money thats bringing him back. |
I once heard Charlie Strong say Bryant Young was the greatest player he ever coached. I'd say that's a decent voice to have on the sideline. |
Pat; When U$C comes into Notre Dame Stadium this Fall, and plays the music from the Queen stong, which I like by the way, I expect the Irish to stick it up their collective @$$e$. |
Interesting article in the SBT. CW picks Young and Grunhard as Graduate Assistants. |
Any way we can sneak Grunhard and Young out onto the field? Please? |
"And starts are one of the only stats that have shown any ability to predict future success for QBs." |
Apparently Grunhard is not a done deal: |
This could probably wait until Pat's Alford post comes out, but I'm curious if Alford was himself -- or has experience coaching -- a "one cut" back needed in the zone blocking scheme. If he can teach our current group of pretty decent running backs how to run within the zone scheme, we could be good. However, if his backs have all been slashers or dancers it would not be a good fit and we'd be in trouble. I trust Weis to recognize that, but who knows... |
thats why up above i only mentioned YOUNG....grunhard isnt a done deal quite yet. Sorry GB |
what i DO know, is that i think charlie has been SPOT ON with his hires. Im definitely not a pro, nor do i know claim to know ANYTHING, but for what it's worth, it seems that charlie is hiring people that fit with his ideology, and people that can recruit! that is nothing but good news. everyone there needs to be on the same page to make things work, and from what i understand, that hasnt been the case the last few years.....now if we can do something about stregth and conditioning..... |

I know what a graduate assistant is in the classroom; what is it on the field? |
I am also curious to the role of a graduate assistant. That title sounds like something I could do, and there aren't many folks who would confuse me with Bryant Young. |
Graduate assistants are basically interns in the coaching profession. A lot of people who want to be coaches get there start that way. They get to watch and learn football strategy and coaching strategies, and are basically the "bitches" of the profession. They get coffee, prepare film tapes, and do other things that the coaches don't really want to do, and while they are there they learn all the things they may not know about coaching. |
I believe a school is limited to the number of coaches they can have for each sport. Graduate assistants allow for another position. However, they are limited to only one or two years at that position. |
Spot on Michael. |
Does that mean we can get rid of Powlus, or it Weis shopping for a new QB's coach? Powlus was average at ND and never made any NFL scouts drool, Why is he the Qb's coach. If it was my A$$ on the line, I would want the best possible coach to teach my QB's. Having Ron there i'm not sure is the best thing for Jimmy & company. |
Thank you very much for the synopsis, Brad and Michael. |
Powlus is the slave there to whisper in Clausen's ear during his 'triumph.' Hopefully he'll get the chance. |
Is Grunhard's non-commitment another in a long line of examples where Weis makes declarations that he doesn't deliver on? You would thought that topic would have been part of the Swarbrick Weis discussions last December. From Grunhard's comments it appears there wasn't even an arrangement discussed. If you are going to continue to offer credibility lapses save it for the more difficult challenges. |
Greg Robinson is the new defensive coordinator at Michigan... |

I'm getting worried that Charlie is not going to hire me as OC or at the very least qb coach. Surely he has read my brilliant comments over the years. Oh well. |
Sorry Canuck, |
